Have your STIHL dealer show you how

to operate your power tool. All safety

precautions that are generally observed

when working with an axe or a hand saw

also apply to the operation of pole

pruners. Observe all applicable federal,

state and local safety regulations,

standards and ordinances.

The use of noise emitting power tools

may be restricted to certain times by

national, state or local regulations.

WARNING

Do not lend or rent your power tool

without the instruction manual. Be sure

that anyone using it understands the

information contained in this manual.

WARNING

The use of this machine may be

hazardous.The pole pruner chain has

many sharp cutters. If the cutters contact

your flesh, they will cut you, even if the

chain is not moving.

Do not cut any material other than wood

or wooden objects. Use your pole pruner

for limbing only.

WARNING

Do not use it for other purposes, since

misuse may result in personal injury or

property damage, including damage to

the machine.

WARNING

Minors should never be allowed to use

this power tool. Bystanders, especially

children, and animals should not be

allowed in the area where it is in use.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of injury to bystanders

and damage to property, never let your

power tool run unattended. When it is

not in use (e.g. during a work break),

shut it off and make sure that

unauthorized persons do not use it. To

do this, switch off the motor, move the

retaining latch to ƒ and remove the

battery from the power tool.

Most of these safety precautions and

warnings apply to the use of all STIHL

pole pruners. Different models may have

different parts and controls. See the

appropriate section of your instruction

manual for a description of the controls

and the function of the parts of your

model.

Always switch off the motor, move

retaining latch to ƒ and remove the

battery before transporting, storing or

carrying out any work on the power tool.

This avoids the risk of the motor starting

unintentionally.

STIHL recommends the use of original

STIHL replacement parts. They are

specifically designed to match your

model and meet your performance

requirements.

THE OPERATOR

Physical Condition

You must be in good physical condition

and mental health and not under the

influence of any substance (drugs,

alcohol, etc.) which might impair vision,

dexterity or judgment. Do not operate

this machine when you are fatigued.

WARNING

Be alert – if you get tired, take a break.

Tiredness may result in loss of control.

Working with any power tool can be

strenuous. If you have any condition that

might be aggravated by strenuous work,

check with your doctor before operating

this machine.

WARNING

Prolonged use of a power tool (or other

machines) exposing the operator to

vibrations may produce whitefinger

disease (Raynaud's phenomenon) or

carpal tunnel syndrome.

These conditions reduce the hand's

ability to feel and regulate temperature,

produce numbness and burning

sensations and may cause nerve and

circulation damage and tissue necrosis.

All factors which contribute to

whitefinger disease are not known, but

cold weather, smoking and diseases or

physical conditions that affect blood

vessels and blood transport, as well as

high vibration levels and long periods of

exposure to vibration are mentioned as

factors in the development of whitefinger

disease. In order to reduce the risk of

whitefinger disease and carpal tunnel

syndrome, please note the following:

– Wear gloves and keep your hands

warm.

– Keep the saw chain sharp and the

pole pruner well maintained. A dull

chain will increase cutting time, and

pressing a dull chain through wood

will increase the vibrations

transmitted to your hands. A power

tool with loose components will tend

to have higher vibration levels.

– Maintain a firm grip at all times, but

do not squeeze the handles with

constant, excessive pressure. Take

frequent breaks.

All the above-mentioned precautions do

not guarantee that you will not sustain

whitefinger disease or carpal tunnel

syndrome. Therefore, continual and

regular users should closely monitor the

condition of their hands and fingers. If

any of the above symptoms appear,

seek medical advice immediately.

WARNING

According to STIHL’s current

knowledge, the electric motor of this unit

should not interfere with a pacemaker.

When in doubt, however, persons with a

pacemaker should consult their

physician and the pacemaker

manufacturer before operating this tool.

Proper Clothing

WARNING

To reduce the risk of injury, the operator

should wear proper protective apparel.

Clothing must be sturdy

and snug-fitting, but allow

complete freedom of

movement. Wear long

pants made of heavy

material to help protect

your legs from contact

with branches or brush.

Avoid loose-fitting jack-

ets, scarfs, neckties,

jewelry, flared or cuffed

pants, unconfined long

hair or anything that

could become caught on

branches, brush or the

moving parts of the unit.

Secure hair so it is above

shoulder level.

Good footing is very

important. Wear sturdy

boots with nonslip soles.

Steel-toed safety boots

are recommended. Never

wear sandals, flip-flops or

go barefoot.

To reduce the risk of

injury to your eyes never

operate your power tool

unless wearing goggles

or properly fitted protec-

tive glasses with

adequate top and side

protection complying with

ANSI Z87 "+" (or your

applicable national stand-

ard). To reduce the risk of

injury to your face STIHL

recommends that you

also wear a face shield or

face screen over your

goggles or protective

glasses.

Wear an approved safety

hard hat to reduce the

risk of injury to your head.

Always wear heavy duty

work gloves (e.g. made of

leather or other wear

resistant material) when

handling the machine

and the cutting tool.

Heavy-duty, nonslip

gloves improve your grip

and help to protect your

hands.

THE POWER TOOL

For illustrations and definitions of the

power tool parts see the chapter on

"Main Parts."

WARNING

Never modify this power tool in any way.

Only attachments supplied by STIHL or

expressly approved by STIHL for use

with the specific STIHL model are

authorized. Although certain

unauthorized attachments are useable

with STIHL power tools, their use may,

in fact, be extremely dangerous.

If your power tool is subjected to

unusually high loads for which it was not

designed (e.g. heavy impact or a fall),

always check that it is in good condition

before continuing work – see also

"Before Starting Work." Make sure the

controls and safety devices are working

properly. Do not continue operating your

power tool if it is damaged. In case of

doubt, have the machine checked by

your STIHL servicing dealer.

Battery

WARNING

Do not place the battery on or near fires,

stoves or in other high-temperature

locations. Do not place the battery in

direct sunlight or store it inside a vehicle

in hot weather. Doing so may cause the

battery to generate heat, rupture or

ignite. Using the batteries in this manner

may also result in a loss of performance

and a shortened battery life.

In case of fire: stay clear of any vapors

or gases generated, taking wind

direction into account. If possible without

danger, remove battery from the vicinity

of the fire. In principle, cooling the

battery or extinguishing the fire with

water is possible. It is preferable to

extinguish the fire with a multipurpose

dry chemical fire extinguisher. As for any

fire, evacuate the area and fight the fire

from a safe distance. Once the fire has

been extinguished, the area should be

monitored (fire watch) in case of a flare-

up, until the battery has cooled

sufficiently. Restrict access to the area

until completion of clean-up. Do not

touch the burnt battery or any spilled

liquids. Use inert absorbent to absorb

spilled liquids.

WARNING

Use STIHL batteries only with STIHL

power tools, and charge them only with

STIHL chargers. Replace battery with

STIHL battery only. Use only genuine

STIHL rechargeable batteries.

Charge the battery before use.

WARNING

Do not open, drop, hit or damage

battery. Never insert objects into the

battery's cooling slots, since they may

damage the battery. The battery

contains safety features and devices

which, if damaged, may cause the

battery to generate heat, rupture or

ignite. Never use or charge a defective,

damaged, cracked or deformed battery.

Immediately discontinue use of the

battery if, while using, charging or

storing, it emits an unusual smell, feels

hot or appears abnormal in any other

way.

WARNING

Fluid may leak from the battery if it is

damaged or is not used properly – avoid

contact with the skin! Leaking battery

fluid can cause skin irritation and

chemical burns. In the event of

accidental contact, immediately rinse

thoroughly with mild soap and water. If

fluid gets into your eye(s), do not rub

your eye(s) but rinse water over the

open eye(s) for 15 minutes at least. Also

seek medical attention immediately.

WARNING

Never bridge (short circuit) the battery

terminals with metallic objects, since this

may damage the battery and possibly

tery from direct sunlight.

tery in fluids.

cause a fire. Keep a battery that is not in

use away from metal objects (e.g. nails,

coins, jewelry). Do not use metal

containers for transporting batteries.

Store the battery out of reach of children

in a cool and dry area away from direct

sunlight and excess heat or cold (14 °F

– 122 °F (-10 °C – +50 °C)).

Charger

Use only original STIHL chargers.

Use only for charging geometrically

matching STIHL batteries with a

maximum rated capacity of 50 Ah and a

maximum voltage of 42 V.

Never charge defective, leaking or

deformed batteries.

Connect the charger only to a power

supply with the voltage and frequency

specified on the rating plate. Always

plug the charger into a properly installed

wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord

unless absolutely neccessary (see

below).

Never use a charger with damaged

housing, damaged power supply cord or

damaged plug. Do not operate the

charger if it has received a sharp blow,

been dropped or otherwise damaged in

any way.

Do not open or dissassemble charger –

there are no user serviceable parts

inside.

Store charger out of the reach of

children.

Operate charger at temperatures

between 41 °F (5 °C) and 104 °F

(40 °C).

Allow the charger to cool down normally

– do not cover it.

Never bridge the contacts of the charger

with metallic objects (e.g. nails, coins,

jewelry) – short circuit. The charger will

be damaged by a short circuit.

In the event of smoke or fire in the

charger, disconnect it from outlet

immediately.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of electric shock or

short circuit, do not insert any objects

into the charger's cooling slots.

WARNING

The charger heats up during the

charging process. Do not operate on an

easily combustible surface (e.g. paper,

cardboard, textiles) or in an easily

combustible environment – risk of fire.

WARNING

Do not operate in a hazardous location,

i.e. in a location where there are

combustible liquids (fumes), vapors or

dusts. Chargers can produce sparks,

which may ignite the dust or vapors –

risk of explosion.

Never jerk the power supply cord to

disconnect it from the wall outlet. To

unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.

Have a damaged power supply cord

repaired by an experienced electrician.

Do not use the power supply cord for

any other purpose, e.g. for carrying or

hanging up the charger.

Never use power supply cords that do

not comply with regulations.

Make sure the power supply cord is

located and/or marked so that it will not

be stepped on, tripped over, come in

contact with sharp edges or moving

parts or otherwise be subjected to

damage or stress.

An extension cord should not be used

unless absolutely necessary. If an

extension cord must be used, plug the

charger into a properly wired 16 gauge

(AWG 16) or heavier gauge extension

cord with blades that are the same

number, size and shapes as the blades

on the charger.

To reduce the risk of electric shock:

– Always connect the unit to a

properly installed wall outlet.

– Make sure the insulation of the

power supply cord and plug is in

good condition.

Protect the charger from

rain and dampness. Keep

charger dry.

Use and store charger

only indoors in dry rooms.

Check the charger's

power supply cord and

plug regularly for dam-

age. If the power supply

cord or plug is damaged,

immediately disconnect

the plug from the wall

outlet to avoid the risk of

electric shock.

Unplug the power supply cord from the

outlet when charger is not in use.

Never store a battery in the charger.

THE USE OF THE POWER TOOL

Transporting the Power Tool

WARNING

Always switch off the motor, move

retaining latch to ƒ, remove the battery

and fit the chain guard (scabbard) over

the chain and guide bar - even when you

carry the unit for short distances. When

transporting it in a vehicle, properly

secure it to prevent turnover, chain oil

spillage and damage.

It may be carried only in a horizontal

position. Grip the shaft in a manner that

the machine is balanced horizontally.

Keep the cutting attachment behind you.

Before Starting Work

Take off the chain guard (scabbard) and

inspect the pole pruner for proper

condition and operation. (See the

maintenance chart near the end of the

instruction manual.)

WARNING

Always check your power tool for proper

condition and operation before starting,

particularly the trigger switch, trigger

switch lockout, retaining latch and

cutting attachment. The trigger switch

and the trigger switch lockout must

move freely and always spring back to

the idle position. Ensure that the trigger

switch will not engage when the trigger

switch lockout is not pressed. Never

attempt to modify the controls or safety

devices.

WARNING

Your power tool is equipped with a

system designed to quickly stop the saw

chain – it comes to an immediate

standstill as soon as you release the

trigger switch and/or the trigger switch

lockout on the control handle.

Check this function at regular short

intervals. To reduce the risk of injury, do

not operate your power tool if the saw

chain continue to run. Contact your

servicing dealer.

WARNING

Never operate your power tool if it is

damaged, improperly adjusted or

maintained, or not completely or

securely assembled.

For proper assembly of the bar and

chain follow the procedure described in

the chapter "Mounting the Bar and

Chain" of your instruction manual.

STIHL Oilomatic chain, guide bar and

sprocket must match each other in

gauge and pitch. Before replacing any

bar and chain, see the chapter entitled

"Specifications" in the instruction

manual.

WARNING

Proper tension of the chain is extremely

important. In order to avoid improper

setting, the tensioning procedure must

be followed as described in your

manual. Always make sure the

hexagonal nut(s) for the sprocket cover

is (are) tightened securely after

tensioning the chain in order to secure

the bar. Never start the pole pruner with

the sprocket cover loose. Check chain

tension once more after having

tightened the nut(s) and thereafter at

regular intervals (whenever the power

tool is shut off). If the chain becomes

loose while cutting, switch off the motor,

move retaining latch to ƒ, remove the

battery and then tighten. Never try to

adjust the chain while the motor is

running!

Adjust carrying harness and hand grip to

suit your size before starting work.

WARNING

After adjusting a chain, switch on the

power tool, let the motor run for a while,

then switch motor off and recheck chain

tension. Proper chain tension is very

important at all times.

Remove the battery from

the power tool. This

avoids the risk of the

motor starting

unintentionally.

Keep the handles clean and dry at all

times; it is particularly important to keep

them free of moisture, pitch, oil, grease

or resin in order for you to maintain a firm

grip and properly control your power

tool.

Check contacts in battery compartment

for foreign matter. Keep clean.

Fit the battery correctly – it must engage

audibly.

For specific starting instructions, see the

appropriate section of your instruction

manual.

If you use a shoulder strap or a

backpack carrying system (special

accessory): Practice removing and

putting down the power tool as you

would in an emergency. To avoid

damage, do not throw the power tool to

the ground when practicing.

During Operation

Holding and Controlling the Power Tool

Place your left hand on the shaft and

your right hand on control handle. Left

handers should follow these

instructions, too. Keep your hands in this

position to have your pole pruner under

control all times.

WARNING

Never attempt to operate your power

tool with one hand. Loss of control of the

power tool resulting in serious or fatal

injury may result.

WARNING

In order to properly control your pole

pruner, always maintain good balance

and a firm foothold. Never work on a

ladder, in a tree or on any other insecure

support. Never hold the machine with

the control handle above shoulder

height. Do not overreach. When working

at a height above 15 feet (4.5 m) use a

lift bucket. For a pole pruner with

adjustable shaft, expand the shaft only

as far as necessary for the intended

application.

WARNING

Special care must be taken in slippery

conditions (wet ground, snow) and in

difficult, overgrown terrain. Watch for

hidden obstacles such as tree stumps,

roots, rocks, holes and ditches to avoid

stumbling. For better footing, clear away

fallen branches, scrub and cuttings. Be

extremely cautious when working on

slopes or uneven ground.

WARNING

Take extreme care in wet and freezing

weather (rain, snow, ice). Put off the

work when the weather is windy, stormy

or rainfall is heavy.

Working Conditions

Operate your power tool only under

good visibility and daylight conditions.

Work carefully.

WARNING

Your pole pruner is a one-person

machine. Do not allow other persons in

the general work area, even when

starting. Stop the motor immediately if

you are approached.

WARNING

This power tool has a large range. In

order to reduce the risk of personal or

even fatal injury to bystanders from

falling objects or inadvertent contact with

the moving chain of your power tool

always keep bystanders at least 50 feet

(15 m) away when the power tool is

running.

Electricity can jump from one point to

another by means of arcing. Higher

voltage increases the distance electricity

can arc. Electricity can also move

through branches, especially if they are

wet. Maintain a clearance of at least

50 feet (15 m) between the pole pruner

(including any branches it is contacting)

and any electrical line carrying live

current. Before working with less

clearance, contact your electric utility

and make sure the current is turned off.

Hold the power tool by insulated

gripping surfaces only, because the saw

chain may contact hidden wiring. Saw

chains contacting a "live" wire may make

exposed metal parts of the power tool

"live" and could give the operator an

electric shock.

WARNING

Use of this product (including

sharpening the saw chain) can generate

dust, mist and fumes containing

chemicals that are known to cause

respiratory problems, cancer, birth

defects, or other reproductive harm. If

you are unfamiliar with the risks

associated with the particular dust, mist

or fume at issue, consult your employer,

governmental agencies such as OSHA

and NIOSH and other sources on

hazardous materials. California and

some other authorities, for instance,

have published lists of substances

known to cause cancer, reproductive

toxicity, etc.

WARNING

Inhalation of certain dusts, especially

organic dusts such as mold or pollen,

can cause susceptible persons to have

an allergic or asthmatic reaction.

Substantial or repeated inhalation of

dust and other airborne contaminants, in

particular those with a smaller particle

size, may cause respiratory or other

illnesses. This includes wood dust,

especially from hardwoods, but also

from some softwoods such as Western

Red Cedar. Control dust (such as saw

dust), mists (such as oil mist from chain

lubrication) and fumes at the source

where possible. Use good work

practices, such as always cutting with a

properly sharpened chain (which

produces wood chips rather than fine

dust) and operating the unit so that the

wind or operating process directs any

dust raised by the power tool away from

the operator. Follow the

recommendations of EPA / OSHA /

NIOSH and occupational and trade

associations with respect to dust

("particulate matter"). When the

inhalation of dust cannot be

substantially controlled, i.e., kept at or

near the ambient (background) level, the

operator and any bystanders should

wear a respirator approved by NIOSH /

MSHA for the type of dust encountered.

WARNING

Breathing asbestos dust is dangerous

and can cause severe or fatal injury,

respiratory illness or cancer. The use

and disposal of asbestos-containing

products have been strictly regulated by

OSHA and the Environmental Protection

Agency. If you have any reason to

believe that you might be cutting

asbestos, immediately stop cutting and

contact your employer or a local OSHA

representative.

Operating Instructions

In the event of an emergency, switch off

the motor immediately, move the

retaining latch to ƒ and remove the

battery.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of cut injuries, keep

hands and feet away from the saw

chain. Never touch a moving chain with

your hand or any other part of your body.

The saw chain continues to move for a

short period after the trigger switch is

fully released.

WARNING

Your pole pruner is not designed for

prying or shoveling away limbs, roots or

other objects. Such use could damage

the cutting attachment.

WARNING

If the chain becomes clogged, always

switch off the motor, move the retaining

latch to ƒ, and make sure the chain has

stopped before cleaning.

Make sure that the saw chain does not

touch any foreign materials such as

rocks, fences, nails and the like. Such

objects may be flung off and injure the

operator or bystanders, or damage the

saw chain.

Check the cutting attachment at regular

short intervals during operation, or

immediately if there is a noticeable

change in cutting behavior:

– Switch off the motor.

– Move retaining latch to ƒ.

– Remove the battery.

– Check condition and tightness, look

for cracks.

The power tool may be used in rain and

wetness. Dry the power tool after

finishing work.

Your power tool is equipped with a

system designed to quickly stop the saw

chain – it comes to an immediate

standstill as soon as you release the

trigger switch and/or the trigger switch

lockout on the control handle.

WARNING

Prior to limbing, clear the working area

from interfering limbs and brush. Then,

establish an escape area away from

where the cut limbs can fall, and remove

all obstacles.

Keep work area clear – move away

fallen limbs. Place all tools and

equipment at a safe distance from the

branches being limbed, but not in the

escape area.

WARNING

Always observe the general condition of

the tree. Look for decay and rot in the

trunk and branches. If it is rotted inside,

it could snap and fall toward the operator

while being cut. Also look for broken or

dead branches which could vibrate

loose and fall on the operator. If branch

is thick or heavy, make a shallow relief

cut on the bottom of the branch before

cutting down from the top to help prevent

splitting of the branch.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of severe or even fatal

injury from falling objects do not cut

vertically above your body. Hold the pole

pruner at an angle of not more than 60°

from the horizontal level (see picture).

Objects may fall in unexpected

directions. Do not stand directly

underneath the limb being cut!

Watch for falling limbs! As soon as the

limbed branch starts to fall, step aside

and keep a sufficient distance away.

WARNING

Always pull the unit out of the cut with

the chain running to reduce the

possibility of pinching the cutting

attachment. Don't put pressure on the

pole pruner when reaching the end of a

cut. The pressure may cause the bar

and rotating chain to pop out of the cut or

kerf, go out of control and strike some

other object.

If the bar becomes pinched and caught

in the branch so that the chain can no

longer move, switch off the motor, move

the retaining latch to ƒ and carefully

move the branch to open the pinch and

release the bar.

WARNING

If a rotating saw chain strikes a rock or

other hard object, sparks may be

created, which can ignite flammable

materials under certain circumstances.

Flammable materials can include dry

vegetation and brush, particularly when

weather conditions are hot and dry.

When there is a risk of fire or wildfire, do

not use a power tool around flammable

materials or around dry vegetation or

brush. Contact your local fire authorities

or the U.S. Forestry Service if you have

any question about whether vegetation

and weather conditions are suitable for

the use of a pole pruner.

Reactive Forces

WARNING

Reactive forces may occur any time the

chain is rotating.The force used to cut

wood can be reversed and work against

the operator. If the rotating chain is

suddenly stopped by contact with any

solid object such as a branch or is

pinched, the reactive forces may occur

instantly. These reactive forces may

result in loss of control, which, in turn,

may cause personal injury. An

understanding of the causes of these

reactive forces may help you avoid the

element of surprise and loss of control.

Because of the design of the pole

pruner, the reactive forces experienced

when working with it are generally not as

severe as those encountered with a

chain saw. Nevertheless, you should

always maintain a proper grip and good

footing to control the power tool when

you experience such forces.

The most common reactive forces are:

– kickback,

– pushback,

– pull-in.

Kickback

Kickback may occur when the moving

saw chain near the upper quadrant of

the bar nose contacts a solid object or is

pinched.

The reaction of the cutting force of the

chain causes a rotational force on the

pole pruner in the direction opposite to

the chain movement. This may cause

the bar to move upward.

To Avoid Kickback

The best protection from kickback is to

avoid kickback situations:

1. Be aware of the location of the guide

bar nose at all times.

2. Never let the nose of the guide bar

contact any object. Do not cut limbs

with the nose of the guide bar. Be

especially careful near wire fences

and when cutting small, tough

limbs, which may easily catch the

chain.

3. Cut only one limb at a time.

A = Pull-in

Pull-in occurs when the chain on the

bottom of the bar is suddenly stopped

when it is pinched, caught or encounters

a foreign object in the wood. The

reaction of the chain pulls the pruner

forward.

Pull-in frequently occurs when the chain

is not rotating at full speed before it

contacts the wood.

To Avoid Pull-in

1. Be alert to forces or situations that

may cause material to pinch the

chain at the bottom of the bar.

2. Always start a cut with the chain

rotating at full speed.

B = Pushback

Pushback occurs when the chain on the

top of the bar is suddenly stopped when

it is pinched, caught or encounters a

foreign object in the wood. The reaction

of the chain may drive the saw rapidly

straight back toward the operator.

Pushback frequently occurs when the

top of the bar is used for cutting.

To Avoid Pushback

1. Be alert to forces or situations that

may cause material to pinch the

chain at the top of the bar.

2. Do not cut more than one limb at a

time.

3. Do not twist the bar when

withdrawing it from an underbuck

cut because the chain can pinch.

MAINTENANCE, REPAIR AND

STORING

If you make a warranty claim for a

component which has not been serviced

or maintained properly, STIHL may deny

coverage.

WARNING

Use only identical STIHL replacement

parts for maintenance and repair. Use of

non-STIHL parts may cause serious or

fatal injury.

Strictly follow the maintenance and

repair instructions in the appropriate

section of your instruction manual.

Please also refer to the maintenance

chart in this manual.

WARNING

Do not attempt any maintenance or

repair work not described in your

instruction manual. Have such work

performed by your STIHL servicing

dealer only.

Wear gloves when handling or

performing maintenance on saw chains.

Keep the chain, bar and sprocket clean;

replace worn sprockets or chains. Keep

the chain sharp. You can spot a dull

chain when easy-to-cut wood becomes

hard to cut and burn marks appear on

the wood. Keep the chain at proper

tension.

Always replace the chain, guide bar and

sprocket as necessary.

Tighten all nuts, bolts and screws after

each use.

Regularly check the electrical contacts

and ensure that the insulation of the

power cord and plug of the charger is in

good condition and shows no sign of

aging (brittleness).

Electrical components, e.g. power cord

of charger, may only be repaired or

replaced by a qualified electrician.

Keep the battery guides free from

foreign matter – clean as necessary.

Do not spray the machine with water.

Do not clean your machine with a

pressure washer. The solid jet of water

may damage parts of the machine.

Clean plastic components with a cloth.

Do not use aggressive detergents. They

may damage the plastic.

Store pole pruner in a dry, locked

location with the retaining latch on ƒ,

the battery removed and out of reach of

children (see chapter "Storing the

Machine" in the instruction manual).

wording of general safety advice for

handheld motor-operated electric power

tools contained in UL 60745-1.

The safety precautions and warnings on

avoiding an electric shock given under

"2) Electrical safety" do not apply to

STIHL cordless electric power tools.

WARNING

Read all safety warnings and all

instructions. Failure to follow the

warnings and instructions may result in

electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for

future reference.

The term "power tool" in the warnings

refers to your mains-operated (corded)

power tool or battery-operated

(cordless) power tool.

1) Work area safety

a) Keep work area clean and well lit.

Cluttered or dark areas invite

accidents.

b) Do not operate power tools in

explosive atmospheres, such as in

the presence of flammable liquids,

gases or dust. Power tools create

sparks which may ignite the dust or

fumes.

c) Keep children and bystanders away

while operating a power tool.

Distractions can cause you to lose

control.

2) Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the

outlet. Never modify the plug in any

way. Do not use any adapter plugs

with earthed (grounded) power

tools. Unmodified plugs and

matching outlets will reduce risk of

electric shock.

b) Avoid body contact with earthed or

grounded surfaces such as pipes,

radiators, ranges and refrigerators.

There is an increased risk of electric

shock if your body is earthed or

grounded.

c) Do not expose power tools to rain or

wet conditions. Water entering a

power tool will increase the risk of

electric shock.

d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use

the cord for carrying, pulling or

unplugging the power tool. Keep

cord away from heat, oil, sharp

edges or moving parts. Damaged or

entangled cords increase the risk of

electric shock.

e) When operating a power tool

outdoors, use an extension cord

suitable for outdoor use. Use of a

cord suitable for outdoor use

reduces the risk of electric shock.

f) If operating a power tool in a damp

location is unavoidable, use a

residual current device (RCD)

protected supply. Use of an RCD

reduces the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing

and use common sense when

operating a power tool. Do not use a

power tool while you are tired or

under the influence of drugs,

alcohol or medication. A moment of

inattention while operating power

tools may result in serious personal

injury.

b) Use personal protective equipment.

Always wear eye protection.

Protective equipment such as dust

mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard

hat, or hearing protection used for

appropriate conditions will reduce

personal injuries.

c) Prevent unintentional starting.

Ensure the switch is in the off-

position before connecting to power

source and/or battery pack, picking

up or carrying the tool. Carrying

power tools with your finger on the

switch or energizing power tools

that have the switch on invites

accidents.

d) Remove any adjusting key or

wrench before turning the power

tool on. A wrench or a key left

attached to a rotating part of the

power tool may result in personal

injury.

e) Do not overreach. Keep proper

footing and balance at all times.

This enables better control of the

power tool in unexpected situations.

f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose

clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair,

clothing and gloves away from

moving parts. Loose clothes,

jewelry or long hair can be caught in

moving parts.

g) If devices are provided for the

connection of dust extraction and

collection facilities, ensure these

are connected and properly used.

Use of dust collection can reduce

dust-related hazards.

4) Power tool use and care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the

correct power tool for your

application. The correct power tool

will do the job better and safer at the

rate for which it was designed.

b) Do not use the power tool if the

switch does not turn it on and off.

Any power tool that cannot be

controlled with the switch is

dangerous and must be repaired.

c) Disconnect the plug from the power

source and/or the battery pack from

the power tool before making any

adjustments, changing accessories,

or storing power tools. Such

preventive safety measures reduce

the risk of starting the power tool

accidentally.

d) Store idle power tools out of the

reach of children and do not allow

persons unfamiliar with the power

tool or these instructions to operate

the power tool. Power tools are

dangerous in the hands of untrained

users.

e) Maintain power tools. Check for

misalignment or binding of moving

parts, breakage of parts and any

other condition that may affect the

power tool's operation. If damaged,

have the power tool repaired before

use. Many accidents are caused by

poorly maintained power tools.

f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean.

Properly maintained cutting tools

with sharp cutting edges are less

likely to bind and are easier to

control.

g) Use the power tool, accessories

and tool bits etc. in accordance with

these instructions, taking into

account the working conditions and

the work to be performed. Use of the

power tool for operations different

from those intended could result in a

hazardous situation.

5) Battery tool use and care

a) Recharge only with the charger

specified by the manufacturer. A

charger that is suitable for one type

of battery pack may create a risk of

fire when used with another battery

pack.

b) Use power tools only with

specifically designated battery

packs. Use of any other battery

packs may create a risk of injury and

fire.

c) When battery pack is not in use,

keep it away from other metal

objects, like paper clips, coins,

keys, nails, screws or other small

metal objects, that can make a

connection from one terminal to

another. Shorting the battery

terminals together may cause burns

or a fire.

d) Under abusive conditions, liquid

may be ejected from the battery;

avoid contact. If contact accidentally

occurs, flush with water. If liquid

contacts eyes, additionally seek

medical help. Liquid ejected from

the battery may cause irritation or

burns.

6) Service

a) Have your power tool serviced by a

qualified repair person using only

identical replacement parts. This

will ensure that the safety of the

power tool is maintained.

Preparations

N Wear suitable protective clothing;

observe safety precautions.

N Adjust the telescoping shaft to the

required length (version with

telescoping shaft).

N Put on the shoulder strap or

backpack carrying system (see

chapters "Fitting the Harness" and

"Backpack Carrying System").

Cutting Sequence

To allow branches to free fall, always cut

the lower branches first. Prune heavy

branches (large diameter) in several

controllable pieces.

WARNING

Never stand directly underneath the

branch you are cutting – be wary of

falling branches. Note that a branch may

spring back at you after it hits the ground

– risk of injury.

Disposal

Do not throw cuttings into the garbage

can – they can be composted.

Working Technique

Hold the control handle with your right

hand, and the shaft with your left hand.

Your left arm should be extended to the

most comfortable position.

Always hold the shaft with your left hand

in the area of the handle hose.

The shaft should always be held at an

angle of 60° or less.

The least tiring working position is a tool

angle of 60°.

Any lesser angle may be used to suit the

situation.

Cross-cut

To avoid pinching the bar in the cut,

position the cutting attachment with the

hook against the branch and then

perform the cross-cut from the top

downwards.

Relieving cut

To avoid tearing the bark on thick

branches, always start by performing a

relieving cut (1) on the underside of the

branch.

N To do this, apply the cutting

attachment and pull it across the

bottom of the branch in an arc as far

as the bar nose.

N Perform the cross-cut (2) – position

the bar with the hook against the

branch and then perform the cross-

cut.

Flush-cutting thick branches

If branch diameter is more than

10 cm (4 in), first

N perform undercut (3) and then

cross-cut at a distance of about

20 cm/8 in (A) from the final cut.

Then carry out the flush-cut (4),

starting with a relieving cut and

finishing with a cross-cut.

Cutting above obstacles

The machine's long reach makes it

possible to prune branches that are

overhanging obstacles, such as rivers or

lakes. The tool angle in this case

depends on the position of the branch.

Cutting from a lift bucket

The machine's long reach enables

cutting to be performed next to the trunk

without the risk of the lift bucket

damaging other branches. The tool

angle in this case depends on the

position of the branch.

A cutting attachment consists of the saw

chain, guide bar and chain sprocket.

The cutting attachment that comes

standard is designed to exactly match

the pole pruner.

– The pitch (t) of the saw chain (1),

chain sprocket and the nose

sprocket of the Rollomatic guide bar

must match.

– The drive link gauge (2) of the saw

chain (1) must match the groove

width of the guide bar (3).

If non-matching components are used,

the cutting attachment may be damaged

beyond repair after a short period of

operation.

Chain scabbard

Your pole pruner comes standard with a

chain scabbard that matches the cutting

attachment.

If you use guide bars of different lenghts

on the pole pruner, the length of the

chain scabbard must be matched to the

guide bar to reduce the risk of injury. It

should cover the full length of the guide

bar.

The length of the matching guide bars is

marked on the side of the chain

scabbard.

and engage peg of tensioner slide in

the hole (4) – place the chain over

clockwise until there is very little

chain sag on the underside of the

bar – and the drive link tangs are

engaged in the bar groove.

N Refit the cover and screw on the nut

fingertight.

N Go to chapter on "Tensioning the

To adjust chain tension:

N Always switch off the power tool, set

the retaining latch to ƒ and remove

the battery.

N Loosen the nut.

N Hold the bar nose up.

N Use a screwdriver to turn the

tensioning screw (1) clockwise until

For automatic and reliable lubrication of

the chain and guide bar – use only an

environmentally compatible quality

chain and bar lubricant. Rapidly

biodegradable STIHL BioPlus is

recommended.

NOTICE

Biological chain oil must be resistant to

aging (e.g. STIHL BioPlus), since it will

otherwise quickly turn to resin. This

results in hard deposits that are difficult

to remove, especially in the area of the

chain drive and chain. It may even cause

the oil pump to seize.

The service life of the chain and guide

bar depends on the quality of the

lubricant. It is therefore essential to use

only a specially formulated chain

lubricant.

WARNING

Do not use waste oil. Renewed contact

with waste oil can cause skin cancer.

Moreover, waste oil is environmentally

harmful.

NOTICE

Waste oil does not have the necessary

lubricating properties and is unsuitable

for chain lubrication.

N Check the oil level in the tank before

starting work, during operation and

every time you change the battery,

or when otherwise necessary.

N Refill the chain oil tank after

changing the battery for the second

time at the latest.

If the oil level in the tank does not go

down, the reason may be a problem in

the oil supply system: Check chain

lubrication, clean the oilways, contact

your dealer for assistance if necessary.

STIHL recommends that you have

servicing and repair work carried out

exclusively by an authorized STIHL

servicing dealer.

Oil filler cap

N Thoroughly clean the oil filler cap

and the area around it to ensure that

no dirt falls into the tank.

N Position the machine so that the

tank cap faces up.

Every new chain has to be broken in for

about 2 to 3 minutes.

Power supply (mains) voltage and

operating voltage must be the same.

N Insert the plug (1) in the wall

outlet (2).

A self test is performed after the charger

is connected to the power supply. During

this process, the light emitting diode (1)

on the charger lights up green for about

1 second, then red and goes off again.

When delivered, the battery is not fully

charged.

It is advisable to charge the battery

completely before using it for the first

time.

N Connect the charger to the power

supply – mains voltage and

operating voltage of the charger

must be the same – see

"Connecting Charger to Power

Supply."

Operate the charger only in a closed, dry

space at ambient temperatures between

41 °F (5 ° C) and 104 °F (40 °C).

Only charge dry batteries. Allow a damp

battery to dry before charging.

N Slide the battery (1) into the

charger (2) until you start to feel

resistance – then push it in until it

engages.

The LED (3) on the charger comes on

when the battery is inserted – see "LED

on Charger."

Charging begins as soon as the

LEDs (4) on the battery glow green –

see "LEDs on Battery."

Charge time depends on a number of

factors, including battery condition,

ambient temperature, etc., and may

therefore vary from the times specified.

The battery heats up during operation in

the power tool. If a hot battery is inserted

in the charger, it may be necessary to

cool it down before charging. The

charging process begins only after the

battery has cooled down. The time

required for cooling may prolong the

charge time.

The battery and charger heat up during

the charging process.

AL 300, AL 500 Chargers

The AL 300 and AL 500 chargers are

equipped with a battery cooling fan,

which can be heard during operation.

AL 100 Charger

The AL 100 charger has no fan and

waits for the battery to cool down before

starting the charging process. The

battery is cooled by heat dissipation in

the ambient air.

End of Charge

The charger switches itself off

automatically when the battery is fully

charged:

– LEDs on the battery go off.

– The LED on the charger goes off.

– The charger's fan is switched off (if

charger is so equipped).

Remove the fully charged battery from

the charger.

Four LEDs show the battery's state of

charge and any problems that occur in

the battery or machine.

N Press button (1) to activate the

display – the display goes off

automatically after 5 seconds.

The LEDs can glow or flash green or

red.

During charging

The LEDs glow continuously or flash to

indicate the progress of charge.

A green flashing LED indicates the

capacity that is currently being charged.

The LEDs on the battery go off

automatically when the charge process

is completed.

If the LEDs on the battery flash or glow

red – see "If the red LEDs glow

continuously / flash".

Fitting the battery

N Insert battery (1) in power tool's

compartment – the battery slides

into position – press it in until it

engages audibly.

firm footing.

N Stand upright – hold the unit in a

relaxed position and always on right

side of your body.

N Hold the power tool with both hands

– one hand on the control handle –

Trigger

Motor speed can be controlled with the

trigger switch. Depress the trigger switch

to accelerate the motor.

lockout (1) and the trigger

N Move the retaining latch (3) to ƒ –

the trigger switch (2) cannot be

operated – the power tool is locked

to prevent start-up.

Checking chain tension

Check chain tension frequently

A new chain has to be retensioned more

often than one that has been in use for

some time.

Chain cold

Tension is correct when the chain fits

snugly against the underside of the bar

and can still be pulled along the bar by

hand. Retension if necessary – see

"Tensioning the Chain".

Chain at operating temperature

The chain stretches and begins to sag.

The drive links must not come out of the

bar groove – the chain may otherwise

jump off the bar. Retension the chain –

see "Tensioning the Chain".

After Finishing Work

N Move the retaining latch to ƒ.

N Take the battery out of the machine.

N Slacken off the chain if you have

retensioned it at operating

temperature during cutting work.

NOTICE

Always slacken off the chain after

finishing work. The chain contracts as it

cools down. If it is not slackened off, it

can damage the drive shaft and

bearings.

Storing for a long period

See chapter on "Storing the Machine".

N Turn the bar over – every time you

sharpen the chain and every time

you replace the chain – this helps

avoid one-sided wear, especially at

the nose and underside of the bar.

N Regularly clean the oil inlet hole (1),

the oilway (2) and the bar

groove (3).

N Measure the groove depth – with the

scale on the filing gauge (special

accessory) – in the area used most

for cutting.

If groove depth is less than specified:

N Replace the guide bar.

The drive link tangs will otherwise

scrape along the bottom of the groove –

the cutters and tie straps will not ride on

the bar rails.

N Use a dry brush or similar tool to

clean the cooling slots at regular

intervals.

Storing the Battery

To optimize the life of the battery, store

it at a state of charge of about 30%.

N Disconnect the plug from the wall

outlet.

N Remove the chain sprocket cover,

chain and guide bar.

N Replace the chain sprocket:

– after using two saw chains;

– or sooner if the wear marks (a) on

the sprocket are deeper than

approx. 0.5 mm (0.020 in) since this

would reduce the life of the chain.

You can use a gauge (special

accessory) to check the depth of the

wear marks.

It is best to use two saw chains in

rotation with one sprocket.

N Use a screwdriver to remove the E-

clip (1).

N Pull off the chain sprocket (2).

N Push the new sprocket (2) on as far

as stop.

N Fit the E-clip (1).

Cutting effortlessly with a correctly

sharpened chain

A properly sharpened chain slices

through wood effortlessly and requires

very little feed pressure.

Working with a dull or damaged chain

requires more physical effort, exposes

the user to higher vibration levels,

produces unsatisfactory cutting results

and increases wear.

N Move the retaining latch to ƒ.

N Remove the battery.

N Clean the chain.

N Check the chain for cracks in the

links and damaged rivets.

N If such cracks or damage are found,

remove the chain and replace any

worn parts of the chain. Match the

new parts to the shape and size of

the original parts.

WARNING

It is absolutely essential to comply with

the angles and dimensions specified

below. If the saw chain is incorrectly

sharpened – and in particular if the depth

gauge is set too low – there is an

increased risk of kickback, with resulting

risk of loss of control and injury.

Chain pitch

The chain pitch (a) is marked on the

depth gauge end of each cutter.

Select file diameter according to chain

pitch – see table “Sharpening Tools”.

You must observe certain angles when

resharpening the chain cutter.

The specified angles A and B are

obtained automatically if the

recommended files or sharpening tools

and correct settings are used.

The angles must be the same on all

cutters. If the angles are uneven: The

chain will run roughly, not in a straight

line, wear quickly and finally break.

File holder

Always use the proper tools. Sufficient

and constant practice will make

sharpening easier.

N Use a file holder

A file holder (special accessory) must be

used for manual resharpening (see table

"Sharpening Tools" at the end of this

chapter). The correct filing angles are

marked on the file holder.

Use only special saw chain sharpening

files. Other files have the wrong shape

and cut.

For checking angles

Use a STlHL filing gauge (special

accessory, see table "Sharpening

Tools"). This is a universal tool for

checking the filing and side plate angles,

depth gauge setting, cutter length and

groove depth. It also cleans the guide

bar groove and oil inlet holes.

File correctly

N Move the retaining latch to ƒ.

N Take the battery out of the machine.

N Select sharpening tools according

to chain pitch.

N Clamp the bar in a vise if necessary.

N The saw chain cannot be locked in

place on the guide bar. To

resharpen the chain by hand,

increase tension of the chain until it

can longer be pulled along the bar.

The chain must be re-tensioned

after sharpening. The alternative is

to remove the chain from the guide

bar and resharpen it on a bench-

mounted sharpener (FG 2, HOS,

USG).

N If you use an FG 2, HOS or USG

sharpener: Remove the chain from

the bar and sharpen according to

the instructions supplied with the

tool.

N Sharpen the chain frequently, take

away as little metal as possible –

two or three strokes of the file are

usually enough.

N Hold the file horizontally (at a right

angle to the side of the guide bar)

and file according to the angles

marked on the file holder. Rest the

file holder on the top plate and depth

gauge.

N Always file from the inside to the

outside of the cutter.

N The file only sharpens on the

forward stroke – lift the file off the

cutter on the backstroke.

N Avoid touching the tie straps and

drive links with the file.

N Rotate the file at regular intervals

while filing to avoid one-sided wear.

N Use a piece of hardwood to remove

burrs from the cutting edge.

N Check angles with the filing gauge.

All cutters must be the same length.

If the cutters are not the same length,

they will have different heights. This

makes the chain run roughly and can

cause it to break.

N Find the shortest cutter and then file

all other cutters back to the same

length. It is best to have this work

done in the workshop on an electric

grinder.

Depth gauge setting

The depth gauge determines the height

at which the cutter enters the wood and

thus the thickness of the chip removed.

Lowering depth gauges

The depth gauge setting is reduced

when the chain is sharpened.

N Use a filing gauge to check the

setting every time you sharpen the

chain.

N Place a filing gauge (1) that

matches the chain pitch on the

chain and press it against the cutter

– if the depth gauge projects from

the filing gauge, the depth gauge

has to be lowered.

N File down the depth gauge until it is

level with the filing gauge.

N File the top of the depth gauge

parallel to the stamped service

marking (see arrow) – but do not

lower the highest point of the depth

gauge in this process.

WARNING

The kickback tendency of the machine is

increased if the depth gauges are too

low.

N Place the filing gauge on the chain –

the highest point of the depth gauge

must be level with the filing gauge.

N After sharpening, clean the chain

thoroughly, remove filings or

grinding dust – lubricate the chain

thoroughly.

N Before a long out-of-service period,

clean the chain and store it in a well-

oiled condition.

Siempre apague el motor, mueva el

protector de mano delantero a ƒ y

saque la batería antes de transportar,

almacenar o intervenir en la herramienta

motorizada. Esto evita el riesgo de que

el motor arranque inesperadamente.

repuesto originales de STIHL. Estas han

sido diseñadas específicamente para su

modelo y satisfacen sus necesidades de

Medidas de seguridad y

técnicas de manejo

Dado que el podador de

varilla es una herra-

mienta de corte

motorizada de gran velo-

cidad y de alcance largo,

es necesario tomar medi-

Es importante que usted

lea, comprenda bien y

respete las siguientes

advertencias y medidas

de seguridad. Lea el

manual de instrucciones

y las instrucciones de

seguridad periódica-

mente. El uso

puede causar lesiones

muerte.

EL OPERADOR

Condición física

Usted debe estar en buenas

condiciones físicas y psíquicas y no

encontrarse bajo la influencia de

ninguna sustancia (drogas, alcohol,

etc.) que le pueda restar visibilidad,

destreza o juicio. No maneje esta

máquina cuando está fatigado.

ADVERTENCIA

Esté alerta. Si se cansa, tómese un

descanso. El cansancio puede provocar

una pérdida del control. El uso de

cualquier herramienta motorizada es

fatigoso. Si usted padece de alguna

dolencia que pueda ser agravada por la

fatiga, consulte a su médico antes de

utilizar esta máquina.

ADVERTENCIA

El uso prolongado de una herramienta

motorizada (u otras máquinas) expone

al operador a vibraciones que pueden

provocar el fenómeno de Raynaud

(dedos blancos) o el síndrome del túnel

carpiano.

Estas condiciones reducen la capacidad

de las manos de sentir y regular la

temperatura, producen entumecimiento

y ardor y pueden provocar trastornos

nerviosos y circulatorios, así como

necrosis de los tejidos.

No se conocen todos los factores que

contribuyen a la enfermedad de

Raynaud, pero el clima frío, el fumar y

las enfermedades o condiciones físicas

que afectan los vasos sanguíneos y la

circulación de la sangre, como asimismo

los niveles altos de vibración y períodos

prolongados de exposición a la

vibración son mencionados como

factores en el desarrollo de la

enfermedad de Raynaud. Por lo tanto,

para reducir el riesgo de la enfermedad

de dedos blancos y del síndrome del

túnel carpiano, sírvase notar lo

– Use guantes y mantenga las manos

abrigadas.

– Mantenga la cadena de aserrado

afilada y el podador de varilla en

buenas condiciones. Una cadena

sin filo aumentará el tiempo de

corte, y el presionar una cadena

roma a través de la madera

aumentará las vibraciones

transmitidas a las manos. Una

herramienta motorizada con

componentes sueltos también

tiende a tener niveles más elevados

de vibración.

– Agarre firmemente los mangos en

todo momento, pero no los apriete

con fuerza constante y excesiva.

Tómese descansos frecuentes.

Todas las precauciones antes dadas no

garantizan que no se sufrirá del mal de

dedos blancos o del síndrome del túnel

carpiano. Por lo tanto, los operadores

constantes y regulares deben revisar

con frecuencia el estado de sus manos

y dedos. Si aparece alguno de los

síntomas arriba mencionados, consulte

inmediatamente al médico.

ADVERTENCIA

Según los datos obtenidos por STIHL en

la actualidad, el motor eléctrico de esta

máquina no debe interferir con un

marcapasos. No obstante, en caso de

duda, las personas con marcapasos

deberán consultar a su médico y al

fabricante del marcapasos antes de

usar esta herramienta.

Vestimenta adecuada

ADVERTENCIA

Para reducir el riesgo de lesiones el

operador debe usar el equipo protector

adecuado.

La ropa debe ser de con-

fección fuerte y ajustada,

pero no tanto que impida

la completa libertad de

movimiento. Use pantalo-

nes largos hechos de un

material grueso para pro-

tegerse las piernas

contra el contacto con

ramas o matorrales. Evite

el uso de chaquetas suel-

tas, bufandas, corbatas,

joyas, pantalones acam-

panados o con

botamangas, pelo largo

suelto o cualquier cosa

que pueda engancharse

en las ramas, matorrales

o piezas en movimiento

de la máquina. Sujétese

el pelo de modo que

quede sobre los

hombros.

LA HERRAMIENTA MOTORIZADA

Para las ilustraciones y definiciones de

los componentes de la herramienta

motorizada, vea el capítulo sobre

“Piezas principales”.

ADVERTENCIA

Nunca modifique, de ninguna manera,

esta herramienta motorizada. Utilice

únicamente los accesorios y repuestos

suministrados por STIHL o

expresamente autorizados por STIHL

para usarse con el modelo específico de

STIHL. Si bien es posible conectar a la

herramienta motorizada de STIHL

ciertos accesorios no autorizados, su

uso puede ser, en la práctica,

extremadamente peligroso.

Si la herramienta motorizada

experimenta cargas excesivas para las

cuales no fue diseñada (por ejemplo,

impactos severos o una caída), siempre

asegúrese de que la máquina esté en

buenas condiciones antes de seguir con

el trabajo – vea también "Antes de

empezar a trabajar". Compruebe que

los controles y dispositivos de seguridad

funcionen correctamente. No utilice la

herramienta motorizada si tiene daños.

En caso de dudas, pida al concesionario

de servicio de STIHL que revise la

máquina.

Batería

ADVERTENCIA

No la coloque sobre o cerca del fuego,

estufas u otros sitios con altas

temperaturas. No la exponga a la luz

solar directa ni la guarde dentro de un

vehículo en climas calurosos. Esto

puede hacer que la batería genere calor,

se rompa o se incendie. El uso de las

baterías de esta manera también puede

perjudicar su rendimiento y su vida útil.

En caso de incendio: manténgase

alejado de los vapores y los gases,

teniendo en cuenta la dirección del

viento. Si es posible hacerlo sin

exponerse a ningún riesgo, retire la

batería de las inmediaciones del

incendio. En principio, es posible enfriar

la batería o extinguir un incendio con

agua. Es preferible extinguir los

incendios con un extinguidor universal

con agente químico seco. Para

cualquier tipo de incendio, evacue el

área y extinga el fuego desde una

distancia segura. Una vez apagado,

controle la zona (vigilancia contra

gruesos (por ejemplo,

fabricados de cuero u

otro material resistente al

desgaste) cuando mani-

pule la máquina y la

herramienta de corte. Los

guantes gruesos y anti-

deslizantes mejoran el

manejo y ayudan a prote-

ger las manos.

Riesgo de incendio,

explosión y/o quemadu-

ras, inclusive aquellas

provocadas por agentes

químicos. No la desarme,

aplaste, caliente a más

de 100 °C (212 °F),

exponga a incendios ni la

incinere. Nunca la

exponga a microondas o

altas presiones.

ADVERTENCIA

Utilice baterías STIHL sólo con

herramientas motorizadas STIHL y

cárguelas únicamente con cargadores

STIHL. Sustituya la batería únicamente

con la batería STIHL. Use sólo baterías

recargables STIHL genuinas.

Cargue la batería antes de utilizarla.

ADVERTENCIA

No abra, arroje, golpee ni dañe la

batería. Nunca inserte objetos en las

ranuras de enfriamiento de la batería

porque podría dañarla. La batería posee

características y dispositivos de

seguridad que, de dañarse, pueden

provocar que ésta genere calor, se

reviente o se incendie. Nunca utilice ni

cargue una batería defectuosa, dañada,

agrietada o deformada.

Suspenda su uso si mientras la usa, la

carga o la guarda, emana un olor poco

habitual, está caliente al tacto o tiene un

aspecto anormal.

ADVERTENCIA

Puede haber fuga de líquido si la batería

está dañada o se utiliza

incorrectamente. ¡Evite el contacto con

la piel! El líquido que se fuga de la

batería puede irritar la piel y causar

quemaduras químicas. En caso de

contacto inadvertido, lávese

inmediatamente con agua y un jabón

suave. Si el líquido penetra en los ojos,

no los restriegue, sino láveselos con

agua durante al menos 15 minutos

manteniéndolos abiertos. También

busque atención médica de inmediato.

ADVERTENCIA

Nunca cree un puente (cortocircuito)

entre los bornes de la batería con

objetos metálicos porque se puede

dañar la batería y posiblemente generar

un incendio. Mantenga las baterías en

desuso alejadas de objetos metálicos

(por ejemplo, clavos, monedas, joyas).

No emplee recipientes metálicos para

transportar baterías.

Guarde la batería fuera del alcance de

niños, en un lugar fresco y seco, alejado

de la luz solar directa y de temperaturas

extremadamente calientes o frías [-

10 °C – +50 °C (14 °F – 122 °F)].

Cargador

Utilice sólo cargadores STIHL

originales.

Utilícelo únicamente para cargar

baterías con forma geométrica

correspondiente STIHL, con una

capacidad máxima de 50 Ah y un voltaje

máximo de 42 V.

Nunca cargue baterías defectuosas,

deformadas o que pierdan líquido.

Conecte el cargador únicamente a un

suministro de energía eléctrica que

brinde el voltaje y la frecuencia

indicados en la chapa de

especificaciones. Siempre conecte el

cargador a un tomacorriente de pared

instalado correctamente. No utilice un

cordón de extensión a menos que sea

absolutamente necesario (vea más

adelante).

Nunca use un cargador que tenga la

caja, el cordón eléctrico o el enchufe

dañado. No opere el cargador si éste

hubiera recibido un fuerte golpe, o se

hubiera caído o dañado de cualquier

otro modo.

No abra ni desarme el cargador – no

contiene en su interior piezas que el

usuario pueda reparar.

Guarde el cargador fuera del alcance de

los niños.

Utilice y almacene la

batería únicamente en un

intervalo de temperaturas

de -10 °C (14 °F) a no

más de + 50 °C (122 °F).

Proteja la batería de la

luz solar directa.

No sumerja la herra-

mienta motorizada en

ningún fluido.

Proteja el cargador de la

lluvia y la humedad. Man-

tenga el cargador seco.

Utilice el cargador a temperaturas de

5°C (41°F) a 40°C (104°F).

Deje que se enfríe por sí solo – no lo

cubra.

Nunca cree un puente entre los

contactos del cargador con objetos

metálicos (por ejemplo, clavos,

monedas, joyas) – cortocircuito. El

cargador podría dañarse debido a un

cortocircuito.

En caso de producirse humo o fuego en

el cargador, desconéctelo del

tomacorriente inmediatamente.

ADVERTENCIA

Para reducir el riesgo de choque

eléctrico o cortocircuito, no inserte

ningún objeto en las ranuras de

enfriamiento del cargador.

ADVERTENCIA

El cargador se calienta durante el

proceso de carga. No lo manipule sobre

superficies que puedan incendiarse con

facilidad (por ejemplo, papel, cartón o

telas) o en un entorno altamente

combustible – peligro de incendio.

ADVERTENCIA

No trabaje en un lugar peligroso, por

ejemplo, en un lugar donde haya

líquidos combustibles (gases), vapores

o polvo. Los cargadores pueden

producir chispas, las cuales son

capaces de encender el polvo o los

vapores - riesgo de explosión.

Nunca tire del cordón eléctrico para

desconectarlo del tomacorriente de

pared. Para desenchufarlo, sujete el

enchufe y no el cordón. El cordón

eléctrico dañado debe ser reparado por

un electricista experimentado.

No use el cordón eléctrico para ningún

otro fin, por ejemplo, para transportar o

sostener el cargador.

Nunca use cordones eléctricos que no

cumplan con los reglamentos.

Asegúrese que el cordón eléctrico esté

ubicado y/o marcado como para que no

se lo pise, se lo lleve por delante, esté

en contacto con bordes cortantes o

partes móviles o, de otro modo sujeto, a

daño o esfuerzo.

No debería usarse un alargador a

menos que sea absolutamente

necesario. Si es imprescindible

utilizarlo, enchufe el cargador en un

cordón de extensión calibre 16

(AWG 16) o de mayor calibre, con

clavijas que sean del mismo número,

tamaño y forma que las del cargador.

Para reducir el riesgo de descarga

eléctrica:

– Siempre conecte la unidad a un

tomacorriente de pared instalado

correctamente.

– Asegúrese de que el aislamiento

del cordón eléctrico y del enchufe

esté en buenas condiciones.

Desenchufe el cordón eléctrico del

tomacorriente cuando el cargador esté

en desuso.

Nunca guarde una batería en el

cargador.

USO DE LA HERRAMIENTA

MOTORIZADA

Transporte de la herramienta

motorizada

ADVERTENCIA

Siempre apague el motor, mueva el

protector de la mano delantero a la

posición ƒ, extraiga la batería y

coloque el protector de cadena (funda)

sobre la cadena y la espada – incluso

cuando traslade la unidad por una

distancia corta. Cuando transporte la

máquina en un vehículo, sujétela

firmemente para impedir su vuelco, los

derrames de aceite de cadena y el daño

a la máquina.

Úselo y guárdelo bajo

techo y en un recinto

seco.

Revise regularmente el

cordón eléctrico y el

enchufe del cargador en

busca de daños. Si

alguno de los dos está

dañado, desconecte de

inmediato el enchufe del

tomacorriente de la pared

para evitar el riesgo de

choque eléctrico.

Retire la batería de la

herramienta motorizada.

Esto evita el riesgo de

que el motor arranque

inesperadamente.

Puede acarrearse solamente en

posición horizontal. Agarre el eje de una

manera que mantenga la máquina

equilibrada horizontalmente. Mantenga

el accesorio de corte detrás de su

persona.

Antes de empezar a trabajar

Quite el protector de la cadena (la

funda) e inspeccione el podador de

varilla para verificar que está en buenas

condiciones de funcionamiento.

cerca del final de este manual de

instrucciones.)

ADVERTENCIA

Antes de empezar a trabajar, siempre

revise que la herramienta motorizada

esté en buenas condiciones y funcione

correctamente, particularmente el

gatillo, el bloqueo del gatillo, el pestillo

de retención y el accesorio de corte. El

gatillo y su el bloqueo deberán moverse

libremente y siempre regresar a la

posición de marcha en vacío.

Compruebe que el gatillo no pueda

oprimirse si no se pulsa el bloqueo del

gatillo. Nunca intente modificar los

controles o los dispositivos de

seguridad.

ADVERTENCIA

La herramienta motorizada está

equipada con un sistema diseñado para

detener rápidamente la cadena de

aserrado – ésta se para apenas usted

suelta el gatillo y/o el bloqueo del gatillo

en el mango de control.

Revise esta función a intervalos cortos

regulares. Para reducir el riesgo de

lesiones, no opere la herramienta

motorizada si la cadena de aserrado

sigue funcionando. Comuníquese con el

concesionario de servicio.

ADVERTENCIA

No maneje nunca una herramienta

motorizada que esté dañada, mal

ajustada o mantenida o que no fue

armada completa y debidamente.

Para el armado de la espada y la

cadena, siga el procedimiento descrito

en el capítulo "Montaje de la espada y la

cadena" del manual de instrucciones. La

cadena Oilomatic, la espada y el piñón

STIHL deben coincidir entre sí en

cuanto a calibre y paso. Antes de

sustituir una espada o cadena, consulte

el capítulo titulado "Especificaciones" en

el manual de instrucciones.

ADVERTENCIA

La tensión adecuada de la cadena es

extremadamente importante. Para

evitar el ajuste inadecuado, ejecute los

procedimientos de tensado tal como se

describen en su manual. Para fijar la

espada en su lugar, siempre asegúrese

que la tuerca o tuercas hexagonales

para la cubierta del piñón quedan

firmemente apretadas después de

tensar la cadena. Nunca arranque el

podador de varilla mientras la cubierta

del piñón está suelta. Compruebe la

tensión de la cadena una vez más

después de apretar la(s) tuerca(s) y de

allí en adelante en intervalos regulares

(accesorio especial): Practique quitarse

la herramienta motorizada y colocarla

en el suelo de la manera en la cual lo

haría en caso de emergencia. Para

evitar dañar la herramienta motorizada,

no la lance al suelo cuando esté

practicando.

Coloque la mano izquierda sobre el eje

y la derecha sobre el mango de control.

Las personas que trabajan con la mano

izquierda (zurdos) también deben seguir

estas instrucciones. Mantenga las

manos en esta posición para guardar el

control del podador de varilla en todo

momento.

ADVERTENCIA

Nunca intente manejar la herramienta

motorizada con una sola mano. La

pérdida de control de la herramienta

motorizada puede ocasionar lesiones

graves o mortales.

ADVERTENCIA

Para mantener el control del podador de

varilla, siempre tenga bien apoyados y

equilibrados los pies. No trabaje sobre

una escalera, en un árbol o cualquier

otro punto de apoyo que no sea seguro.

Nunca sujete la máquina con el mango

de control a una altura superior a la de

sus hombros. No trate de llegar más

lejos de lo debido. Si se va a trabajar a

una altura de más de 4,5 m (15 pies),

utilice un canasto elevador. En el

podador de varilla con eje ajustable,

alargue el eje sólo lo necesario para el

trabajo deseado.

ADVERTENCIA

Se debe tener cuidado especial cuando

las condiciones del suelo son

resbaladizas (suelo húmedo, nieve) y en

terreno difícil y con mucha vegetación.

Para evitar tropezarse, esté atento a los

obstáculos ocultos, tales como tocones,

raíces, piedras, hoyos y zanjas. Para

obtener un punto de apoyo seguro, quite

las ramas caídas, los matorrales y el

material cortado. Sea sumamente

precavido cuando trabaje en declives o

terreno irregular.

Proceda con sumo cuidado cuando

una persona. No deje que otras

personas estén en el lugar de trabajo,

la cadena de aserrado podría entrar en

contacto con cables ocultos. Si la

cadena de aserrado entra en contacto

con un cable con corriente, esto podría

hacer que los componentes metálicos

de la herramienta motorizada tengan

corriente y darle una sacudida eléctrica

al operador.

ADVERTENCIA

El uso de este producto (incluido el

afilado de la cadena de aserrado) puede

generar polvo y vapores que contienen

productos químicos considerados como

causantes de enfermedades

respiratorias, cáncer, defectos de

nacimiento u otra toxicidad

reproductora. Si usted desconoce los

autoridades gubernamentales tales

como OSHA y NIOSH y otras fuentes de

ADVERTENCIA

La inhalación de ciertos polvos,

especialmente los polvos orgánicos,

inhalación repetida o de grandes

cantidades de polvo u otros

opuesto del operador. Observe las

EPA/OSHA/NIOSH y las asociaciones

de trabajo y los sindicatos con respecto

al polvo ("materia particulada"). Si no es

posible controlar la inhalación de polvo

de manera significativa, es decir,

mantenerla al nivel de ambiente (fondo)

o cerca del mismo, el operador y los

demás deberán usar una mascarilla de

respiración aprobada por NIOSH /

MSHA para el tipo de polvo existente.

ADVERTENCIA

La inhalación del polvo de asbesto es

peligrosa y puede causar lesiones

graves o mortales, enfermedades

respiratorias o cáncer. El uso y desecho

de productos que contengan asbesto

está estrictamente regulado por la

OSHA y la Agencia de Protección

Ambiental. Si por cualquier motivo cree

que está cortando asbesto, suspenda el

corte de inmediato y póngase en

contacto con su empleador o un

representante de OSHA local.

Instrucciones de manejo

En caso de emergencia, apague el

motor inmediatamente, mueva el

pestillo de retención a la posición ƒ y

extraiga la batería.

ADVERTENCIA

Para reducir el riesgo de lesionarse,

mantenga las manos y los pies alejados

Si la cadena se atasca, siempre apague

el motor, mueva el pestillo de retención

a la posición ƒ y asegúrese que la

cadena esté detenida antes de limpiarla.

Asegúrese que la cadena de aserrado

no toque ninguna materia extraña como

por ejemplo rocas, cercas, clavos y

cosas por el estilo. Tales objetos

pueden ser lanzados y lesionar al

operador o a terceros y dañar la cadena

de aserrado.

Revise el accesorio de corte frecuente y

periódicamente durante el trabajo, o

inmediatamente si hay cambios

importantes de las características de

corte:

– Apague el motor.

– Mueva el pestillo de retención a la

posición ƒ.

– Retire la batería.

– Revise la condición y el apriete,

busque grietas.

La herramienta motorizada puede

emplearse bajo la lluvia y con humedad.

Seque la herramienta motorizada

después de haber terminado los

trabajos.

La herramienta motorizada está

equipada con un sistema diseñado para

detener rápidamente la cadena de

aserrado – ésta se para apenas usted

suelta el gatillo y/o el bloqueo del gatillo

en el mango de control.

ADVERTENCIA

Antes de recortar las ramas, despeje de

zona de trabajo las ramas y matorrales

que puedan causar interferencia.

Después, establezca un lugar de

escape de la zona de caída de las

ramas y retire todos los obstáculos.

Mantenga despejada la zona de trabajo

– quite las ramas caídas. Coloque todas

las herramientas y el equipo a una

distancia prudente de las ramas

recortadas, pero no en la zona de

escape.

ADVERTENCIA

Siempre observe la condición general

del árbol. Busque evidencia de deterioro

y pudrición en el tronco y en las ramas.

Si está podrido en su interior, podría

romperse repentinamente y caer hacia

el operador cuando está siendo

recortado. Siempre busque las ramas

quebradas o muertas que puedan

soltarse con la vibración y caerle

encima. Si la rama es gruesa o pesada,

haga un corte de distensión no muy

profundo en la parte inferior de la rama

antes de cortarla por su parte superior

para evitar que la rama se parta.

ADVERTENCIA

Para reducir el riesgo de lesiones

graves o mortales causadas por la caída

de objetos, no haga cortes directamente

sobre su cuerpo. Sostenga el podador

de varilla a un ángulo no mayor que 60°

respecto a la horizontal (vea la

ilustración). Los objetos pueden caer en

direcciones no anticipadas. No se pare

directamente debajo de la rama que es

está recortando!

Esté atento a las ramas que caen. Tan

pronto la rama recortada empieza a

caer, apártese y guarde una distancia

adecuada de la rama.

puede hacer que la espada y la cadena

en movimiento salten fuera de la ranura

de corte o entalla, perdiéndose el control

y golpeando otro objeto.

Si la espada queda aprisionada en la

rama de modo que la cadena ya no

pueda moverse, apague el motor,

coloque el pestillo de retención a la

posición ƒ y mueva la rama con

cuidado para aflojar la estricción y

liberar la espada.

ADVERTENCIA

Si una cadena de aserrado en

movimiento chocara contra una roca u

otro objeto macizo, se podrían despedir

chispas capaces de encender

materiales inflamables en determinadas

circunstancias. Entre los materiales

inflamables se incluyen la vegetación y

matorrales secos, en particular cuando

el estado del tiempo es caliente y seco.

Si existe un riesgo de incendio leve o

grave, no use herramientas motorizadas

alrededor de materiales inflamables, ni

para cortar vegetación o arbustos

secos. Comuníquese con las

autoridades locales de control de

incendios o con el servicio forestal de

los EE. UU. si tiene alguna duda en

cuanto a las condiciones de la

vegetación y el estado del tiempo para

el uso de una podador de varilla.

Fuerzas reactivas

ADVERTENCIA

Las fuerzas reactivas pueden ocurrir en

cualquier momento mientras la cadena

está girando. La fuerza utilizada para

cortar madera puede cambiar de sentido

y actuar contra el operador. Si una

cadena en movimiento se detiene

repentinamente al tocar un objeto sólido

como por ejemplo una rama, o bien

queda aprisionada, pueden presentarse

de inmediato las fuerzas reactivas. Esas

fuerzas reactivas pueden causar la

pérdida del control, lo que a su vez

puede causar lesiones personales. Una

buena comprensión de las causas de

estas fuerzas reactivas puede ayudarle

a evitar el elemento de sorpresa y la

pérdida del control.

Debido a su diseño, las fuerzas

reactivas producidas al trabajar con el

podador de varilla, por lo general, no

son tan severas como las producidas

por una motosierra. No obstante,

siempre agarre firmemente la

herramienta motorizada y tenga buen

apoyo para los pies para mantener el

control cuando se producen tales

fuerzas.

Las fuerzas reactivas más comunes

son:

– contragolpe,

– rechazo,

– tirones,

Contragolpe

El contragolpe puede ocurrir cuando la

cadena en movimiento cerca del

cuadrante superior de la punta de la

espada toca un objeto sólido o queda

aprisionada.

La reacción de la fuerza de corte de la

cadena causa una fuerza de rotación en

el podador de varilla en sentido contrario

al movimiento de la cadena. Esto puede

causar el movimiento hacia arriba de la

espada.

Para evitar el contragolpe

La mejor protección contra un

contragolpe es evitar las situaciones de

contragolpe:

1. Sea consciente de la ubicación de

la punta de la espada en todo

momento.

2. Nunca deje que la punta de la

espada haga contacto con ningún

objeto. No corte ramas con la punta

de la espada. Preste especial

atención al trabajar cerca de vallas

de alambre y cuando corte ramas

pequeñas y duras que pueden

fácilmente quedar enredados en la

cadena.

3. Corte solamente una rama a la vez.

El tirón ocurre cuando la cadena en la

parte inferior de la espada se detiene

repentinamente cuando queda

aprisionada, retenida o choca con algún

objeto extraño en la madera. La

reacción de la cadena tira del podador

hacia adelante.

A menudo, el tirón ocurre cuando la

cadena no está a plena velocidad antes

de quedar en contacto con la madera.

Para evitar los tirones

1. Esté alerta a las fuerzas o

situaciones que pueden permitir

que el material aprisione la cadena

en la parte inferior de la espada.

2. Siempre empiece el corte con la

cadena girando a velocidad

máxima.

B = Rechazo

El rechazo ocurre cuando la cadena en

la parte superior de la espada se detiene

repentinamente cuando queda

aprisionada, retenida o choca con algún

objeto extraño en la madera. La

reacción de la cadena puede impulsar

repentinamente la sierra hacia atrás

contra el operador. El rechazo

frecuentemente ocurre cuando se utiliza

la parte superior de la espada para

hacer los cortes.

Para evitar el rechazo

1. Esté alerta a las fuerzas o

situaciones que pueden permitir

que el material aprisione la cadena

en la parte superior de la espada.

2. No corte más de una rama a la vez.

3. No tuerza la espada al retirarla de

un corte por debajo, porque la

cadena puede quedar aprisionada.

ALMACENAMIENTO

garantía para algún componente que no

ha sido reparado o mantenido

debidamente, STIHL puede denegar la

garantía.

ADVERTENCIA

Utilice solamente piezas de repuesto de

STIHL idénticas a las originales para el

mantenimiento y las reparaciones. El

uso de piezas no fabricadas por STIHL

puede causar lesiones graves o incluso

instrucciones de mantenimiento y

Las precauciones de seguridad y

advertencias para evitar una sacudida

eléctrica dadas bajo "2) Seguridad con

la electricidad" no se aplican a las

herramientas motorizadas eléctricas

inalámbricas de STIHL.

ADVERTENCIA

Lea todas las advertencias de seguridad

y todas las instrucciones. Si no se

siguen todas las advertencias e

instrucciones se podrían producir

sacudidas eléctricas, incendios y/o

lesiones graves.

Conserve todas las advertencias e

instrucciones para referencia en el

El término "herramienta motorizada"

que aparece en las advertencias se

refiere a su herramienta alimentada por

cordón eléctrico o por batería

(inalámbrica).

1) Seguridad en la zona de trabajo

a) Mantenga la zona de trabajo limpia

y bien iluminada. Las zonas

desordenadas y oscuras son

propensas a accidentes.

b) No utilice las herramientas

mecánicas en entornos explosivos,

tales como cuando hay líquidos,

gases o polvos inflamables

presentes. Las herramientas

mecánicas producen chispas que

podrían encender el polvo o los

vapores.

c) Mantenga a los niños y a terceros

alejados de la herramienta

motorizada al usarla. Las

distracciones podrían hacerle

perder el control.

2) Seguridad eléctrica

a) El enchufe de la herramienta

motorizada debe corresponder con

el tomacorriente. Nunca modifique

el enchufe en modo alguno. No

utilice enchufes adaptadores con

herramientas mecánicas que

tengan clavija de puesta a tierra. El

uso de enchufes no modificados

con tomacorrientes

correspondientes reduce el riesgo

de sacudidas eléctricas.

b) Evite el contacto entre su cuerpo y

superficies puestas a tierra tales

como tubos, radiadores, estufas y

refrigeradores. Existe un riesgo

mayor de sufrir sacudidas eléctricas

si su cuerpo está conectado con

tierra.

c) No exponga las herramientas

mecánicas a la lluvia ni a

condiciones húmedas. Si entra

agua a una herramienta motorizada

se aumenta el riesgo de sufrir

sacudidas eléctricas.

d) No maltrate el cordón eléctrico.

Nunca utilice el cordón eléctrico

para sostener, arrastrar o

desenchufar la herramienta

motorizada. Mantenga el cordón

alejado del calor, aceite, bordes

afilados y piezas móviles. Los

cordones averiados o retorcidos

aumentan el riesgo de sacudidas

eléctricas.

e) Cuando se usa una herramienta

motorizada a la intemperie, utilice

un cordón de extensión adecuado

para uso a la intemperie. Un cordón

adecuado para uso a la intemperie

reduce el riesgo de sacudidas

eléctricas.

f) Si resulta ineludible el uso de una

herramienta motorizada en un lugar

húmedo, utilice un suministro de

energía eléctrica con dispositivo de

corriente residual (RCD). El uso de

un RCD reduce el riesgo de

sacudidas eléctricas.

3) Seguridad personal

a) Manténgase alerta, observe lo que

hace y utilice buen criterio al usar

una herramienta motorizada. No

utilice una herramienta motorizada

si está bajo la influencia de drogas,

alcohol o medicamentos. Un

descuido momentáneo durante el

uso de una herramienta motorizada

puede causar una lesión personal

grave.

b) Utilice equipos de protección

personal. Siempre protéjase los

ojos. El uso de equipos protectores

tales como mascarillas, zapatos de

seguridad antirresbalones, casco y

protectores de oídos en

condiciones apropiadas reduce las

lesiones personales.

c) Evite los arranques accidentales.

Verifique que el interruptor se

encuentre en posición de apagado

antes de conectar la máquina a la

fuente de energía y/o a la batería,

antes de levantar o de acarrear la

herramienta. Acarrear herramientas

mecánicas con un dedo sobre el

interruptor de encendido, o

conectarle la alimentación a

herramientas cuyo interruptor está

en posición de encendido es buscar

un accidente.

d) Quite todas las llaves o

herramientas de ajuste antes de

encender la herramienta

motorizada. Una herramienta o

llave que se deje colocada en un

componente giratorio de la

herramienta motorizada podría

causar lesiones personales.

e) No trate de alcanzar más lejos de lo

debido. Mantenga los pies bien

apoyados y equilibrados en todo

momento. Esto brinda un mejor

control de la herramienta

motorizada si sucede alguna

situación inesperada.

f) Use vestimenta adecuada. No

utilice ropa suelta ni artículos de

joyería. Mantenga su cabello,

vestimenta y guantes alejados de

las piezas móviles. La ropa suelta,

los artículos de joyería o el cabello

largo pueden ser atrapados por los

componentes en movimiento.

g) Si se tienen dispositivos para la

conexión de aparatos extractores y

recogedores de polvo, verifique que

los mismos estén conectados y que

se usen debidamente. El uso de un

recogedor de polvo puede reducir

los peligros relacionados con el

polvo.

4) Uso y cuidado de herramienta

motorizada

a) No fuerce la herramienta

motorizada. Utilice la herramienta

motorizada correcta para su

situación. La herramienta

motorizada correcta lleva a cabo la

tarea de modo mejor y más seguro,

y al ritmo para la cual fue diseñada.

b) No utilice la herramienta motorizada

si su interruptor no la enciende y la

apaga. Toda herramienta

motorizada que no pueda

controlarse con su interruptor es

peligrosa y deberá ser reparada.

c) Desconecte el enchufe de la fuente

de energía y/o la batería de la

herramienta motorizada antes de

hacer ajustes, cambiar accesorios o

almacenar la herramienta. Estas

medidas preventivas de seguridad

reducen el riesgo de arrancar la

herramienta motorizada por

accidente.

d) Guarde las herramientas

mecánicas fuera del alcance de los

niños y no permita que personas no

familiarizadas con la herramienta

motorizada o con sus instrucciones

utilicen la herramienta. Las

herramientas mecánicas en manos

de personas no capacitadas para

usarlas son peligrosas.

e) Dele mantenimiento a las

g) Utilice la herramienta motorizada,

accesorios, brocas, etc. según lo

indicado en estas instrucciones,

herramienta motorizada para

trabajos diferentes al propósito para

el cual fue diseñada puede producir

una situación peligrosa.

5) Uso y cuidado de herramienta de

baterías

a) Recárguela únicamente con el

cargador especificado por el

fabricante. Un cargador adecuado

para un tipo de baterías puede crear

un riesgo de incendios si se lo utiliza

con un tipo de baterías diferente.

b) Utilice las herramientas

motorizadas únicamente con las

baterías designadas para ellas. El

uso de otras baterías puede crear

riesgos de lesiones o incendio.

c) Cuando no se utilizan las baterías,

manténgalas alejadas de objetos

metálicos tales como presillas de

papel, monedas, llaves, clavos,

tornillos u otros objetos pequeños

que pudieran formar una conexión

entre los terminales de las baterías.

Un cortocircuito entre los terminales

de batería puede causar

quemaduras o un incendio.

d) En condiciones de maltrato, se

podría expulsar líquido de la

batería; evite el contacto con el

mismo. Si ocurre el contacto

accidental, lave la zona con agua.

Si el líquido entra en contacto con

los ojos, buscar atención médica. El

líquido despedido por la batería

puede causar irritación o

quemaduras.

6) Mantenimiento

a) El mantenimiento deberá efectuarlo

únicamente un técnico calificado,

utilizando piezas de repuesto

genuinas. Esto asegura que se

mantenga la seguridad de la

herramienta.

Preparaciones

N Use vestimenta protectora

adecuada y respete las medidas de

seguridad.

N Ajuste el eje telescópico al largo

requerido (versión con eje

telescópico).

N Colóquese la correa para el hombro

o el sistema de transporte tipo

mochila (consulte los capítulos

de transporte tipo mochila").

Secuencia de corte

Para permitir que las ramas caigan

libremente, siempre corte las ramas

más bajas primero. Recorte las ramas

pesadas (de diámetro grande) en varios

trozos fáciles de manejar.

ADVERTENCIA

Nunca se pare directamente debajo de

la rama que se está cortando – esté

atento a la caída de las ramas.

Obsérvese que una rama puede rebotar

hacia usted después de haber caído al

suelo – riesgo de lesiones.

Técnica de trabajo

Sujete el mango de control con la mano

derecha y el eje con la izquierda.

Extienda el brazo izquierdo a la posición

que le resulte más cómoda.

Siempre sujete el eje con la mano

izquierda, colocándola en la zona de la

manguera del mango.

El eje siempre deberá mantenerse a un

ángulo de 60° o menos.

La posición de trabajo que menos

cansancio provoca es la que forma un

ángulo de 60° con respecto a la

herramienta.

Se puede utilizar cualquier ángulo

menor según la situación.

Corte transversal

Para que la espada no quede

aprisionada en el corte, coloque el

accesorio de corte con su gancho contra

la rama y luego lleve a cabo el corte

transversal de arriba hacia abajo.

Corte de distensión

Para evitar arrancar la corteza al

recortar ramas gruesas, siempre haga

primero un corte de distensión (1) en el

lado inferior de la rama.

N Para hacer esto, coloque el

accesorio de corte y tire del mismo

a lo ancho de la parte inferior de la

rama en forma de arco, hasta llegar

a la punta de la espada.

N Haga el corte transversal (2) –

coloque la barra con el gancho

contra la rama y luego realice el

corte transversal.

Corte a ras de ramas gruesas

Si el diámetro de la rama supera los

10 cm (4 pulg), primero

N realice un corte en el lado

inferior (3) y luego haga un corte

transversal a unos 20 cm/8 pulg (A)

del corte final. Después haga el

corte a ras (4), empezando con un

corte de distensión y terminando

con el corte transversal.

Corte sobre obstáculos

El largo alcance de la máquina posibilita

Corte desde un canasto elevado

El largo alcance de la máquina permite

cortar junto al tronco sin el riesgo de que

el canasto dañe otras ramas. El ángulo

de la herramienta en este caso depende

de la posición de la rama.

Un accesorio de corte consta de la

cadena de aserrado, la espada y el

piñón.

El accesorio de corte estándar ha sido

diseñado para usarse específicamente

con el podador de varilla.

– El paso (t) de la cadena de

aserrado (1), el piñón impulsor y el

piñón de la espada Rollomatic

deben corresponder entre sí.

– El grueso del eslabón impulsor (2)

exclusivamente un lubricante de

calidad, compatible con el medio

ambiente, diseñado para uso con

cadenas y espadas. Se recomienda el

aceite STIHL BioPlus, el cual es

rápidamente biodegradable.

INDICACIÓN

El aceite de cadena biodegradable debe

ser resistente al envejecimiento (por

ejemplo, STIHL BioPlus), pues de lo

contrario se convertiría rápidamente en

resina. Esto produce como resultado

depósitos sólidos difíciles de quitar,

especialmente en las zonas del mando

de la cadena y la cadena misma. Hasta

puede causar el agarrotamiento de la

bomba de aceite.

La vida útil de la cadena y de la espada

depende de la calidad del lubricante.

Por lo tanto, es esencial usar un

lubricante de cadena de formulación

especial.

ADVERTENCIA

No use aceite de desecho. El contacto

repetido con aceite de desecho puede

causar cáncer en la piel. Además, el

aceite de desecho es dañino para el

ambiente.

INDICACIÓN

El aceite de desecho no tiene las

propiedades lubricantes necesarias y no

es adecuado para la lubricación de

cadenas.

N Revise el nivel de aceite en el

Cadena a temperatura de

funcionamiento

La cadena se estira y empieza a colgar

con soltura. Los eslabones impulsores

no deben salirse de la ranura de la

barra; de la contrario, la cadena podría

soltarse. Vuelva a tensar la cadena –

Vea "Tensado de la cadena".

Después de completar el trabajo

N Mueva el pestillo de retención a la

N Retire la batería de la máquina.

N Afloje la cadena si se ha vuelto a

INDICACIÓN

Suelte siempre la tensión de la cadena

N Dé vuelta a la espada – cada vez

ayudará a evitar que se produzca

desgaste por un solo lado,

especialmente en la punta y la cara

inferior de la espada.

N Limpie regularmente el orificio de

entrada de aceite (1), el conducto

de aceite (2) y la ranura de la

espada (3).

N Mida la profundidad de la ranura,

con el calibrador de rectificación

(accesorio especial), en la zona

utilizada para la mayoría de los

cortes.

Si la profundidad de la ranura es menor

que la especificada:

N Sustituya la espada.

De lo contrario las pestañas de los

eslabones impulsores rasparán la parte

inferior de la ranura – los cortadores y

las amarras no viajarán sobre los rieles

de la espada.

N Utilice un cepillo seco o herramienta

similar para limpiar los agujeros

alargados de enfriamiento

Corte sin esfuerzo usando una cadena

correctamente afilada

Una cadena debidamente afilada corta

la madera con poco esfuerzo y requiere

aplicar muy poca presión.

El trabajo con una cadena desafilada o

dañada requiere de un mayor esfuerzo

físico, expone al usuario a niveles más

elevados de vibraciones, produce cortes

insatisfactorios y aumenta el desgaste.

N Mueva el pestillo de retención a la

posición ƒ.

N Retire la batería.

N Limpie la cadena.

N Revise la cadena en busca de

roturas en sus eslabones y daños

en sus remaches.

N Si se descubren roturas o daños

semejantes, retire la cadena y

sustituya los componentes de la

misma que tengan desgaste. Las

piezas nuevas deberán coincidir

con las originales tanto en forma

como en tamaño.

ADVERTENCIA

Es absolutamente esencial cumplir con

los ángulos y dimensiones abajo

especificados. Si la cadena se afila de

modo incorrecto – y en particular si los

calibradores de profundidad se fijan

demasiado bajo – se aumenta el riesgo

de contragolpes y de las lesiones

resultantes de los mismos.

Paso de cadena

El paso de la cadena (a) está marcado

en el extremo de calibrador de

profundidad de cada cortador.

Seleccione el diámetro de la lima según

el paso de la cadena – consulte la tabla

de "Herramientas de afilado".

Debe respetar ciertos ángulos cuando

afile el cortador de la cadena.

Afilado y ángulos de placa lateral

A Angulo de limado

B Ángulo de placa lateral

Los ángulos A y B que se especifican se

obtienen automáticamente si se usan

las limas o herramientas afiladoras que

se recomiendan y si se usan los ajustes

correctos.

Los ángulos deben ser iguales en todos

los cortadores. Si los ángulos son

desiguales: La cadena funcionará

irregularmente, no en línea recta, se

desgastará rápidamente y, por último,

se romperá.

Portalima

Siempre utilice las herramientas

correctas. La práctica suficiente y

constante facilita el afilado.

N Use un portalima

Se debe usar un portalima (accesorio

especial) para afilar manualmente la

cadena (vea la tabla "Herramientas de

afilado", al final del presente capítulo).

Los ángulos de rectificación correctos

están marcados en el portalima.

Utilice únicamente limas de afilado

especiales para cadenas de aserrado.

Las limas de otros tipos tienen forma y

patrón de corte incorrectos.

Para comprobar los ángulos

Utilice un calibrador de rectificación

STIHL (accesorio especial – vea la tabla

"Herramientas de afilado"). Esta es una

herramienta universal para revisar los

ángulos de rectificación y de la placa

lateral, el ajuste de los calibradores de

profundidad, el largo de los cortadores y

la profundidad de la ranura. Además,

limpia la ranura de la espada y los

agujeros de entrada de aceite.

N Mueva el pestillo de retención a la

posición ƒ.

N Retire la batería de la máquina.

N Elija las herramientas de afilado

según el paso de la cadena.

N Sujete la espada en un tornillo de

banco, de ser necesario.

N La cadena de aserrado no puede

afilarla colocándola en una

herramienta de afilado de taller

(FG 2, HOS, USG).

N Si se usa la herramienta FG 2, HOS

o USG para afilar: Quite la cadena

de la espada y afílela según las

instrucciones incluidas con la

herramienta.

N Afile la cadena con frecuencia;

rebaje tan poco metal como sea

posible – dos o tres pasadas de la

lima generalmente son suficientes.

N Sostenga la lima en posición

horizontal (perpendicular al lado de

la espada) y pásela a los ángulos

indicados en el portalima. Apoye el

portalima sobre la placa superior y

el calibrador de profundidad.

N Siempre pase la lima desde el

interior hacia el exterior del

cortador.

N La lima afila únicamente en la

pasada de ida – quite la lima del

cortador para la pasada de retorno.

N Evite tocar las amarras y eslabones

impulsores con la lima.

N Gire la lima a intervalos regulares al

limar para evitar desgastar uno de

sus lados solamente.

N Utilice un trozo de madera dura

para quitar las rebabas del borde

cortante.

N Compruebe el ángulo con el

calibrador de rectificación.

Todos los cortadores deben tener el

mismo largo.

Si los cortadores no tienen el mismo

largo, sus alturas serán diferentes. Esto

hace que la cadena funcione

irregularmente y podría causar su

rotura.

N Identifique el cortador más corto y

rectifique los demás cortadores

para que tengan el mismo largo. Es

mejor hacer este trabajo en un

taller, con un esmeril eléctrico.

Ajuste de calibrador de profundidad

El calibrador de profundidad determina

la altura a la cual el cortador penetra en

la madera y por lo tanto determina el

espesor de la viruta que se quita.

a La distancia o el ajuste especificado

entre el calibrador de profundidad y

el borde de corte.

Este ajuste puede aumentarse en 0,2

mm (0,008 pulg) para cortar maderas

blandas cuando el tiempo está templado

– sin escarcha.

Reducción de calibradores de

profundidad

El ajuste del calibrador de profundidad

se reduce cuando se afila la cadena.

pieza STIHL, el logotipo de { y,

en ciertos casos, el símbolo K de

piezas STIHL. En las piezas pequeñas

el símbolo puede aparecer solo.

consulte la garantía de sistemas de

emisiones dada en este manual.

Información sobre reciclado de baterías

STIHL está comprometida con el
