If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your product dealer or local power company. For products intended to operate from battery power, or other sources, refer to the operating instructions. 12 Grounding or Polarization – This product may be equipped with a polarized alternating current line plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other). This plug will fit into the power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug. 13 Power-Cord Protection – Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the product. 14 Lightning – For added protection for this product during a lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges. 15 Power Lines – An outside antenna system should not be located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or power circuits, or where it can fall into such power lines or circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extreme care should be taken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contact with them might be fatal. 16 Overloading – Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock. 17 Object and Liquid Entry – Never push objects of any kind into this product through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product. 18 Servicing – Do not attempt to service this product yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Article 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, provides information with regard to proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode. VOLTAGE SELECTOR (General model only) The VOLTAGE SELECTOR on the rear panel of DVR-S60 must be set for your local main voltage BEFORE plugging into the AC main supply. Voltages are 110–120V/220–240V AC, 50/60 Hz. This system is not disconnected from the AC power source as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if this system itself is turned off. This state is called the standby mode. In this state, this system is designed to consume a very small quantity of power. IMPORTANT Please record the serial number of DVR-S60 in the space below. MODEL: Serial No.: The serial number is located on the rear of DVR-S60. Retain this Owner’s Manual in a safe place for future reference. Press the tab on the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow and remove the cover. 2. Insert the two batteries (AA, R06, UM-3 type) with + and – oriented properly. 3. Attach the cover so that it snaps into place. Notes on batteries • Change all of the batteries if you notice a decrease in the operating range of the remote control. • Do not use old batteries together with new ones. • Do not use different types of batteries (such as alkaline and manganese batteries) together. Read the packaging carefully as these different types of batteries may have the same shape and color. • If the batteries have leaked, dispose of them immediately. The positioning of the speakers is important because it controls the whole sound quality of this system. Place the speakers depending on your listening position by following the instructions below. Note: - In this speaker package, the same speakers (NX-S60S) are used for the front and surround speakers. - Although the speaker system in this system is magnetically shielded, it may still affect the color on the television monitor when using this system near the television. Adjust the relative positions of this system and the television if this happens. Placing the speakers Front speakers: Front right speaker Surround speakers: Behind your listening position, facing slightly inward. About 1.8 m (approx. 6 feet) from the floor. Center speaker Front left speaker On both sides of and at approximately the same height as the TV set. Surround right speaker Center speaker: Precisely between the front speakers. Subwoofer: The position of the subwoofer is not so critical because low bass tones are not highly directional. QD-Bass Technology QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate the sound in four horizontal directions. Subwoofer Surround left speaker Caution for carrying the subwoofer Do not insert your hands into the openings at the lower part of the subwoofer when carrying it. If you touch the inside speaker unit, it may be damaged. Remove the warning label put by the factory setting when using the subwoofer. Placing the center speaker You can place the speaker on top of the TV if the top is flat, on the floor under the TV, or inside the TV rack . Be sure to place the speaker in a stable position. When placing the speaker on top of the TV, to prevent the speaker from falling, attach the provided fasteners at two points on the bottom of the speaker and on the top of the TV. Note: - Do not place the speaker on top of a TV whose area is smaller than the bottom of the speaker. If placed, the speaker may fall and cause injury. - Do not place the speaker on top of a TV if the top is inclined. - Do not touch the adhesive surface after peeling off the seal as this will weaken its adhesive strength. - Thoroughly wipe clean the surface where the fastener is to be applied. Note that adhesive strength is weakened if the surface is dirty, oily or wet and that this may cause the center speaker to drop. Placing the the front/surround speakers When placing the speakers on a flat surface, attach the included nonskid pads to the corners on the bottom of the speakers. This prevents the speakers from sliding around. To mount the speakers on a wall by using the holes on the speakers’ back panels 1. WARNING ● Each speaker weighs 0.9 kg (2 lbs.). Do not mount them on thin plywood or a wall composed of a soft surface material. If mounted, the screws may pull out of the flimsy surface and the speakers may fall. This may damage the speakers or cause personal injury. ● Do not affix the speakers to a wall using nails, adhesives, or any other unstable hardware. Long-term use and vibrations may cause the speakers to fall. ● To avoid accidents resulting from tripping over loose speaker cables, fix the cables to the wall. ● Select an appropriate position on the wall to mount the speaker so that no one will injure his/her head or face. Using the Yamaha Speaker Stand SPS-80 (option) By using the Yamaha Speaker Stand SPS-80, speakers can be placed on the floor. Mounting bracket Screw 2. Progressive Scanning While interlaced scanning produces one frame of video in two fields, progressive scanning creates one frame in one field. Conventional interlaced scanning constitutes one second with 30 frames (60 fields), but progressive scanning constitutes it with 60 frames from scratch. Progressive scanning can reproduce sharper picture with high resolution for still image or other picture containing long texts or horizontal lines. This model has compliance with 480p (progressive) system. Interlaced scanning + Progressive scanning Do not connect the unit to a VCR directly. Note: For more details, please refer to the jacket or case of the disc. - Press the STANDBY/ON button to turn on this unit. Turn on the TV and select the channel for the DVD player. Select the playback picture size suitable for the aspect ratio of the TV. (See “Display” under “SETTINGS ON THE SET UP MENU” on Page 16.) Select the desired language for the screen menus. (See “OSD” – “Language” under “SETTINGS ON THE SET UP MENU” on Page 16.) Note: - Do not touch the disc tray while it is moving. - Never place anything except a disc on the disc tray. Foreign objects can damage the unit. - Do not apply excessive force to the disc tray. - Only one disc can be placed on the disc tray. - To open or close the disc tray, be sure to use the q button. Do not press the disc tray with your hand. When an operation button is pressed, that operation is displayed on the TV screen. The display turns off after several seconds. If a disc is loaded, you can turn the unit on and begin play immediately by pressing the button. Loading a disc 1. Press the q button. “OPEN” appears on the display and the disc tray opens. 2. Continuing play from where you stopped watching (LAST MEMORY PLAY) [DVD] 1. During play, press the LAST MEMO button at the point from which you want to resume play later. “L.M.-STOP” appears on the display. Play stops automatically. 2. Remove the disc or turn off the power. 3. Load the disc (and press the button), or turn on the power. “Last Memory Play?” screen appears. Last Memory Play? Yes No Clear … The memory is released. 4. Press the 4 or 5 button to select “Yes”. 5. Press the ENTER button. Play resumes from the point where you stopped. (If desired, press the LAST MEMO button again.) Note: - Points on up to 5 discs can be memorized. - The Last Memory Play mode may not work correctly with some discs. What is “PBC”? “PBC” is an abbreviation for “Playback Control” that refers to control codes prerecorded on Video CDs. During playback of a Video CD with PBC, “PBC” appears on the display. To lock the disc tray (Using the main unit) You can lock the disc tray to prevent misuse of young children. While the disc tray is opened, press the q button until “LOCKED” appears on the TV screen. - The q button will not function. To release this mode, press the q button until “UNLOCKED” appears. Starting play Press the button. The DVD function is selected and play starts automatically. Example: C Note: - If “NO DISC” appears on the display, load the disc. If the disc is loaded with the label side downward (and it is a single sided disc), or if a badly scratched disc is loaded, “NO DISC” (or “NO PLAY”) appears. If this occurs, load the disc correctly or replace the disc. - The producing method of commercially available discs may differ with each disc. Though there may be a case that the sound becomes intermittent just after the playback of a disc starts, this is dependent on the disc and not a malfunction of this system. The settings will be retained in the memory until they are changed, even if the power is turned off. Common procedures of settings 1. When the wide screen disc is played back, the black bands appear at the top and bottom of screen. Note: - You cannot switch audio sound track languages if there is only one language recorded on the disc. - When you play a DVD disc, the player automatically displays the preselected subtitle language if it is included on the disc. - If “OTHERS” is selected, enter the language code. (See “LANGUAGE CODE LIST” on Page 22.) COMPONENT OUTPUT (U.S.A., Canada and Korean models only): If you use a conventional TV and connect it to the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks (see page 10), select “INTERLACE”. If you use a TV with progressive-scan capability and connect it to the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks (see page 11), select “PROGRESSIVE”. Note: - If the VIDEO OUT SELECT and VIDEO OUT SCAN SELECT switches are not correct position, you cannot select “COMPONENT OUTPUT: PROGRESSIVE”. - If you select “COMPONENT OUTPUT: PROGRESSIVE” when using a conventional TV, the TV screen is disturbed. Cut off 4:3 PS (Panscan): Select when a conventional TV set is connected. When the wide screen disc is played back, it displays pictures cropped to fill to your TV screen. The left and right edges are cut off. 16:9: Select when a wide screen TV set is connected. Played in “FULL” size. (Setting the wide screen TV to “FULL” mode is also necessary.) Note: - The screen size may differ depending on the DVD video discs. - If you select 16:9 to get rid of the black bands on screen when wide screen disc is played back, picture may be slightly distorted. - In some discs, even if 4:3 PS is selected, the black bands may remain on the screen. AUTO: It automatically selects the VIDEO (Video source) or FILM (Film source) according to the played disc. Normally, select this mode. VIDEO (Video source): Major DVD-Video sources consist of video sources and film sources. Select when playing a DVD video disc recorded with a video source or TV program like drama, animation, etc. (30 frames per second, 60 fields). FILM (Film source): Major DVD-Video sources consist of video sources and film sources. Select when playing a DVD video disc recorded with a movie film (24 frames per second). Note: - Initial setting is “AUTO”. - If picture flickering occurs at “AUTO” mode, select “VIDEO” or “FILM”. Parental control MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) Guideline is a rating system that provide advance cautionary information to parents about the content of movie programs. Parental 1 D-RANGE CONTROL (Dynamic range control): It limits a big sound. Select “ON” or “OFF”. Enter the password you have set. Press 5 or 4 button to select “PARENTAL LEVEL”. Press a or b button to select the desired level. The selectable levels are as follows. PARENTAL LEVEL: OFF, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 The parental lock level is equivalent to the following MPAA Rating System. Level 7: NC-17 (No one 17 and under admitted) Level 6: R (Restricted) Level 4: PG13 (Parental guidance cautioned) Level 3: PG (Parental guidance suggested) Level 1: G (General audiences) Some DVD discs contain a restriction level which enables parents to prevent playback of discs by children. This DVD player is equipped with a password designed to prevent children changing the level. You cannot play DVD discs rated higher than the level you selected unless you cancel the parental lock function. For example, when you select level “5”, the DVD player will not play discs with the rating of “6”, “7” or “8”. The information will appear on the TV screen. If you forget the password… Enter “788444” to clear the current password. Enter a new password and set the parental lock level again. Fast play Skipping forward Press the e button during play to skip to the next chapter (or track). A chapter (or track) is skipped each time the button is pressed. Skipping back Press the f button during play to skip back to the beginning of the chapter (or track) currently played. Press the button again immediately to skip back to the beginning of the previous chapter (or track). Note: You can skip only through the chapters, not over the titles on the DVD disc. The player skips back to last approximately 10 seconds, then changes it to the next camera angle and plays it, and continues play. (If desired, press both buttons again.) Repeat play Press the REPEAT button during play (or programmed play) of the title (or track) you want to repeat. Each time the button is pressed, the repeat mode changes as follows. So, if the playback is muted temporarily when you switch the audio soundtrack languageto another on a disc that has two or more audio soundtrack languages, this is not a malfunction of this system. MP3 CD information Limitations on MP3 CD play - This player can recognize up to 255 files or folders per disc. The CD with 256 files or folders and more is not available on this player. - This player can recognize up to 8 directory trees per disc. - MP3 CDs may not be played in the recorded order. - As for a multi-session disc, only the first session can be played. - If the CD has both audio tracks and MP3 files, only audio tracks are played. - It would take 30 seconds or more for this player to read MP3 files depending on its structure. Limitations on the display - The display can show up to 33 letters at a time. Available letters on the display are the following: capital or small alphabets of A through Z, numbers of 0 through 9, and _ (underline). - Other letters than those above are replaced in blank. Notes on MP3 files - The recommend recording setting for a high-quality sound is 44.1 kHz of sampling frequency and 128 kbps of fixing bit rate. - To play an MP3 CD in the recorded order, 1. Please use the MP3 software with the function that can record data alphabetically or numerically. 2. Put the name including two-digit or three-digit number like “01”, “02” or “001”, “002” on each file. 3. Please refrain from making many sub-folders by preference. - Some MP3 CDs can not be played back depending on the recording conditions. MP3 CD Play 1. Load an MP3 CD. A table of contents in the root directory appears on the TV screen. LISTENING TO THE RADIO To turn the unit on and listen to the last received station, press the TUNER button on the remote control. Listening to preset stations 1. Press the INPUT or TUNER button to select FM or AM. 2. Press the PRESET button briefly to select the desired channel. - The number buttons on the remote control can also be used. Example: Press 0, then 9. Preset scan tuning 1. Press the INPUT or TUNER button to select FM or AM. 2. Press the PRESET button for at least 1 second. The channel number appears. Each of the preset stations is tuned in for 5 seconds. - The PRESET button on the remote control can also be used. 3. When the desired station has been tuned in, press the PRESET button again to keep the reception locked at that station. To receive FM stereo broadcasts Automatic/Manual tuning 1. Press the INPUT or TUNER button to select FM or AM. When using the remote control, press the TUNER button instead of the INPUT button. Make sure that “MONO” is not displayed. If “MONO” appears, press the FM MODE button to turn the “MONO” indication off. “ST” appears when an FM stereo broadcast is received. - If the signal from an FM stereo station is weak and reception is poor, press the FM MODE button to change to the MONO mode. The reception may be improved, but the sound will be monaural. 2. Automatic tuning Press the TUNING + or TUNING – button for at least 1 second to tune in a station. The unit will scan up or down the band and receive the next receivable station. Press the button again to continue. Manual tuning Press the TUNING + or TUNING – button briefly until the desired frequency is displayed. MHz (U.S.A. and Canada models) To preset stations Up to 20 FM and 10 AM stations can be preset. Automatic presetting (APT) 1. Press the INPUT or TUNER button to select FM or AM. 2. Press the MEMORY button for at least 3 seconds. “PROG.” flashes. The automatic tuning mode is set and automatic presetting begins from the low end of the band. When 20 FM or 10 AM stations have been preset or the high end of the band is reached, automatic presetting stops. “PROG.” disappears and the station memorized on channel 1 will be heard. 3. To preset stations on the other band, follow steps above. Note: If APT is activated, all previously programmed stations of the band will be cleared and new stations will be programmed. Manual presetting 1. Tune in the station to be preset as described in “Automatic/Manual tuning”. 2. Press the MEMORY button. PROG. MHz (U.S.A. and Canada models) 3. While “PROG.” is flashing, press the PRESET button to select the channel to be preset. PROG. MHz (U.S.A. and Canada models) 4. While “PROG.” is flashing, press the MEMORY button. - In this example, “90.1 MHz” FM station is preset on FM channel 9. MHz (U.S.A. and Canada models) 5. Repeat steps above to add more preset stations. - When presetting a new station, the previous preset station is cleared. E-23 A3-60U-E (02.7.26)a 23 02.8.8, 3:39 PM Using the sleep timer TIMER OPERATION (Using the remote control) Using the timer Set the time when the timer turns on and off, source to be used and volume level. Timer operation will start with the selected source at the “on” time. The power will be switched off at the “off” time. The timer will function every day unless it is released. Preparation Note: Make absolutely sure that the clock is set to the correct time before setting the timer. - - Select the source for timer operation and prepare the source to be used. - If the selected source is the tuner, tune in to the desired band and station. Adjust the volume level as desired. The sleep timer automatically switches off the power after a preset time has elapsed. The volume will gradually be reduced (faded-out) from 1minute before the unit turns off. There are 9 time periods available: 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, and 10 minutes. Press the SHIFT + 6 SLEEP buttons repeatedly to select the desired sleep time. “SLEEP” appears on the display. After several seconds, the original display returns and the brightness of the display reduces. To check the remaining sleep time Press the SHIFT + 6 SLEEP buttons once. After several seconds, the original display returns. To release the sleep timer while in operation Press the SHIFT + SET/CLEAR buttons. The timer is also released if the power is switched off. Operation 1. Press the SHIFT + 7 TIMER buttons. ON The previously set timer “on” time setting appears. 2. Press the SHIFT + 8 ADJUST buttons within 15 seconds. ON 3. Set the hour of the “on” time by pressing the TUNING – or + button, then press the SHIFT + 8 ADJUST buttons. ON x ON Set the minute in the same way. ON x OFF The timer “off” time setting appears. 4. Set the timer “off” time as described in step 3. “0” blinks. 5. While “0” is flashing, press the INPUT button to select the source to be used. 6. Press the SHIFT + 8 ADJUST buttons. The timer operation standby mode is activated. “0” remains lit. 7. Press the STANDBY/ON button to switch off the power. - “0” disappears from the display when this system is turned into the standby mode. To switch off the power during a timer-controlled operation, press the STANDBY/ON button. The timer will be set in the standby mode. To check the timer settings Press the SHIFT + 7 TIMER buttons repeatedly. The timer settings are displayed in the following order: On time v Off time v Source To change the settings, press the SHIFT + 7 TIMER buttons to select the setting to be changed, then press the SHIFT + 8 ADJUST buttons to make the display flash. Change the setting as explained above. To release the timer After turning the power on, press the SHIFT + 7 TIMER buttons, then press the SHIFT + SET/CLEAR. Note: - If the SHIFT + SET/CLEAR buttons are pressed while the timer is being set, the original display returns. - The timer mode is released if a power failure occurs during timer controlled operation. - The timer may not operate if a power failure occurs during timer operation standby mode.
