Before using this unit please read these operating instructions carefully. Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the unit itself as
well as the safety suggestions listed below.
Afterwards keep them handy for future reference.
Do not place the unit
on amplifiers or equip-
ment that may become
hot.
The heat can damage the unit.
PRECAUTIONS
Placement
1. Ventilation—The unit should be situated so that its location or
position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. Allow
10 cm (4q) clearance from the rear of the unit.
2. Foreign Material—Care should be taken so that objects do not
fall into and liquids are not spilled into the unit. Do not subject
this unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or
shock.
3. Carts and Stands—The unit should be used
only with a cart or stand that is recommended by
the manufacturer. The unit and cart combination
should be moved with care. Quick stops, exces-
sive force, and
uneven surfaces may cause the unit and cart combination to
overturn.
4. Mounting—Any mounting of the appliance should follow the
manufacturer’s instructions, and should use a mounting acces-
sory recommended by the manufacturer.
Maintenance
Disconnect this unit from the AC outlet before cleaning.
Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moist-
ened with a mild detergent solution.
Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent
such as alcohol or benzine.
The model number and serial number of this product can be
found on either the back or the bottom of the unit.
Please note them in the space provided below and keep for
future reference.

Safety
1. Power Source—The unit should be connected to a power
supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or
as marked on the unit. If you are not sure of the type of power
supply to your home, consult your appliance dealer or local pow-
er
company.
2. Polarization—If the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power
plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug will
fit into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you
are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the
plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to
replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of
the polarized plug.
3. Power Cord Protection—AC power supply cords should be
routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by
items placed upon or against them. Never take hold of the plug
or cord if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body when
connecting or disconnecting it.
4. Overloading—Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords
as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.
5. Nonuse Periods—When the unit is not being used, turn the
power off. When left unused for a long time, the unit should be
unplugged from the household AC outlet.
6. Attachments—Do not use attachments not recommended by
the unit manufacturer as they may cause hazards.
Installation
Environment
1. Water and Moisture—Do not use this unit near water—for
example, near a bathtub, washbowl, swimming pool, or the like.
Damp basements should also be avoided.
2. Condensation—Moisture may form on the lens in the following
conditions…
³immediately after a heater has been turned on.
³in a steamy or very humid room.
³when the unit is suddenly moved from a cold environment to a
warm one.
If moisture forms inside this unit, it may not operate properly. To
correct this problem, turn on the power and wait about one hour
for the moisture to evaporate.
3. Heat—The unit should be situated away from heat sources such
as radiators and the like. It also should not be placed in tempera-
tures less than 5 oC (41 oF) or greater than 35 oC (95 oF).

º Region Management Information
(DVD-Video only)
This unit responds to the Region Management Information recorded
on DVD-Video. This unit’s region number is “1”. You cannot play the
disc if the region number on the DVD-Video does not correspond to
the region number on the unit.
You can play discs with labels containing the region number “1” and
“ALL”. Read the disc’s instructions carefully.
º Playing DVDs and Video CDs
The producer of the material can control how these discs are
played. This means that you may not be able to control play of a disc
with some operations described in these operating instructions.
Read the disc’s instructions carefully.
º DVD-RAM discs
DVD-RAM discs must meet the following conditions for this unit to
be able to play them. It may not be possible to play some discs due
to the condition of the recording.

MP3 playback
You can use this unit to play MP3 format audio recorded for personal use with a computer etc. onto CD-R or CD-RW. Play may not be
possible in some cases due to the condition of the recording. Discs recorded using MP3 differ to CDs in the following ways.

³Not compatible with multi-session recordings
If you record MP3 onto CD-R/CD-RW over a number of sessions, this unit can play only the recordings made in the first session.
³Recordings will not necessarily be played in the order you recorded them. The recordings will be reordered according to their titles:
numbers in numerical order first, upper case in alphabetical order next, and lower case in alphabetical order last.
³If you play an MP3 track that includes still picture data, it will take some time before the music itself starts playing and the elapsed time
will not be displayed during this time. Even after the track starts, the correct play time will not be displayed.
º Discs that cannot be played
PAL discs (the audio on DVD-Audio can be played), DVD-RAM
(2.6 GB, TYPE 1), DVD-ROM, DVD-R (some DVD-R can be

Mishandling of batteries can cause electrolyte leakage which can
damage items the fluid contacts and may cause a fire.

Wash thoroughly with water if electrolyte comes in contact with any
part of your body.
Remove if the remote control is not going to be used for a long peri-
od of time. Store in a cool, dark place.
Replace if the unit does not respond to the remote control even
when held close to the front panel.

Aim at the sensor, avoiding obstacles, at a maximum range of

Do not touch the recorded surface.
º If the surface is dirty
DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Video CD, CD
Wipe it with a damp cloth and then wipe dry.
Do not wipe with a circular motion; wipe straight outward from the
center.
DVD-RAM
³Clean DVD-RAM only with the DVD-RAM/PD disc cleaner availa-
ble as an optional accessory.
³Never use cloths or cleaners for CDs, etc.
º Condensation
Moisture may condense on discs after being brought inside from the
cold.
If the disc is a DVD-RAM, use the DVD-RAM/PD disc cleaner avail-
able as an optional accessory to wipe it dry.
With other discs, wipe with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
º Handling precautions
³Do not write on the label side with a ball-point pen or other writing
instrument.
³Do not use record cleaning sprays, benzine, thinner, static electric-
ity prevention liquids or any other solvent.
³Do not attach labels or stickers to discs. (Do not use discs with
exposed adhesive from tape or left over peeled-off stickers.)
³Do not use scratch-proof protectors or covers.
³Do not use discs printed with label printers available on the
market.
º Do not place or store discs in the following

As this unit has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders (➡ page 34), you can enjoy discs recorded with these systems by connecting this unit to
the 6-channel input terminals on an AV amplifier (connection [B] below). However, to enjoy the special sound effects available with AV amplifiers
that can make you feel like you were in a cinema or hall, connect this unit digitally to the AV amplifier (connection [A] below).
Use analog connection [B] to enjoy the high quality audio (sampling frequencies of 192 kHz and 96 kHz) and multi-channel audio found
on DVD-Audio. If the disc is copyright-protected, the audio can only be output through the digital output terminal if it is converted to 48
kHz.

Connections using the S video or component video terminals

[A] S VIDEO OUT terminal
The S VIDEO terminal achieves a more vivid picture than the
VIDEO terminal by separating the chrominance (C) and luminance
(Y) signals. (Actual results depend on the television.)
[B] COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminal
These terminals can be used for either interlace or progressive out-
put and provide a purer picture than the S VIDEO terminal.
Connection using these terminals outputs the color difference sig-
nals (P
B/PR) and luminance signal (Y) separately in order to achieve
high fidelity in reproducing colors.
³The description of the component video input terminals depends
on the television or monitor (e.g. Y/P
B/PR, Y/B-Y/R-Y, Y/CB/CR).
Connect to terminals of the same color.
³After making this connection, change the black level for a better
picture (➡ page 29, Video—Black Level Control).
To enjoy progressive video
1. Connect to the component video (480p) input terminals on
a television compatible with this unit’s copy guard system.
Video will not be displayed correctly if you connect to a
television that is incompatible with this unit’s copy guard
system.
2. Press [PROGRESSIVE ON] on the front panel so the
indicator lights (➡ page 15).
Recording to MDs or cassette tapes
To make a digital recording
1. Connect the recording equipment with an optical or coaxial digit-
al audio cable (➡ page 9 [A]).
2. When recording DVDs, make the following settings.
VIRTUAL SURROUND (V.S.S.): OFF (➡ page 22)
Digital Audio Output: On (➡ page 29)
PCM Down Conversion: Yes (➡ page 29)
Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround: PCM (➡ page 29)
Note
³With CDs, wait for the total play time to appear before turning on
your recording unit’s synchro recording feature. The beginning
may be cut off if you turn it on while “READING” is displayed.
³With DVDs, recording may be interrupted when a new chapter be-
gins. Use analog recording if this persists.
These phenomena occur because DVD players must first deter-
mine the audio format and sampling frequency before switching
digital output.
º Analog recording
You can record to an MD or cassette deck. Using analog connection
means sound will be unaffected by the copy guards found on DVDs.
To make an analog recording
Connect the recording equipment with an audio cable
(➡ page 10 [D]).
º Digital recording
You can record the digital signal directly onto an MD.
The signals on DVDs will be converted to 48 kHz/16 bit linear PCM.
Ensure the following conditions are met.
³There is no copy guard recorded on the disc.
³The recording equipment can handle a sampling frequency of
48 kHz/16 bit.

Preparation
Turn on the television and select the appropriate video input on the
television to suit the connections for the player.
1 Press [ê/I, POWER] to turn on the
unit.

2 Press [OPEN/CLOSE] to open the disc
tray.
3 Place the disc on the disc tray.
Remove TYPE 2 discs from their cartridges before use.
4 Press [1] (PLAY).
The disc tray closes and play begins.
º To stop play
Press [º] (➡ page 13, Resume function).
º To pause play [A]
Press [;] during play.
Press [1] (PLAY) to restart play.
º Displaying the text information on discs

You can display the disc title, artist name, and track titles on the
television if this information is recorded on the disc.
Press [TEXT].
The text display is turned on and off each time you press the button.
Some text information also scrolls across the unit’s display.
³The unit cannot display the text on some discs.

³If “” appears on the television
The operation is prohibited by the unit or disc.
³The disc continues to rotate while the menu is displayed even after
you finish playing an item. Press [º] when you finish to preserve
the unit’s motor and your television screen.
³Volume may be lower when playing DVDs than when playing other
discs or during television broadcasts.
If you turn the volume up on the television or amplifier, ensure you
reduce the volume again before playing other sources so that a
sudden increase in output does not occur.
º Auto standby
The unit switches to the standby mode after about 30 minutes in the
stop mode.
Playing CD-R and CD-RW
This unit can play CD-DA (digital audio) and Video CD format
audio CD-R and CD-RW that have been finalized
¤
upon com-
pletion of recording.
It may not be able to play some CD-R or CD-RW due to the
condition of the recording.
¤
Finalizing is a process that enables CD-R/CD-RW players to
play audio CD-R and CD-RW.

Resume function
[RAM] [DVD-A] [DVD-V] [VCD] [CD]
The position you stopped play at is recorded by the unit when “!” is
flashing on the unit’s display.
While “!” is flashing on the unit’s display, press [1] (PLAY) to start
play from where you stopped it.
If you are playing DVD-Video, the illustrated message also appears.
Press [1] (PLAY) while the message is displayed and the beginning
portions of each chapter up to the current one are played. Full play
resumes from the point where you stopped play.
(This feature works only within a title.)
If you do not press [1] (PLAY), the message disappears and play
starts from where you stopped it.
To cancel
Press [º] until “!” disappears from the unit’s display.
Note
³The resume function does not work if the disc’s play time is not
displayed.
³The position is cleared when the disc tray is opened.
³The unit saves the position even when you switch the unit to stand-
by except when playing a play list (➡ page 20).

Selecting groups to play
[DVD-A]
The tracks on DVD-Audio are divided into groups. How these
groups are played differs with the disc so read the instructions that
came with the disc for further details.
1 Press [GROUP].
The group and track icons are displayed.
2 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to
select the group number and press
[ENTER].
3 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to
select the track number and press
[ENTER].
The selected group and track begin to play.
³You can also select groups with the remote control’s numeric but-
tons or [GROUP] on the main unit. Press [1] (play) to start playing
the selected group.
³Selection may not be allowed in some situations.
Playing all the groups in succession (➡ page 17)
Playing bonus groups
Some discs contain bonus groups. To enjoy these groups you may
have to enter a password. Refer to the disc’s jacket.
1. While stopped press [GROUP].
2. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to select the bonus group and
press [ENTER] or [1] (PLAY).
3. Enter the 4-digit password with the remote control’s numeric
buttons and press [ENTER].
4. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to select a track and press
[ENTER] to start play.
³Some discs will show a menu screen for you to enter your pass-
word. Follow the instructions on the screen.
³The bonus group can be played as many times as you like after the
password has been entered until the disc is removed from the unit.
Note
If you enter the wrong password, the previous screen will be
displayed. Start again from the beginning. You can erase it by
pressing [CANCEL].

To enjoy even higher quality
sound—VIDEO OFF
[RAM] [DVD-A] [DVD-V] [VCD] [CD]
You can enjoy higher quality audio by stopping the video signal.
Press [VIDEO OFF].
³The light above the button on the main unit lights.
³VIDEO OFF is canceled if you press the button again or turn the
unit off. The light goes out.
Note
Video signals are output while the disc is stopped and when opera-
tions such as searching are performed. The television can appear
unusual while video signals are not being output.

[RAM] [DVD-A] [DVD-V] [VCD]
The component video output terminals (Y, P
B/CB, PR/CR) can output
progressive signals. You can obtain a sharp and smooth high-
quality picture with less flicker using a television that can receive
progressive signals. (➡ page 11)
Press [PROGRESSIVE ON].
³The PROGRESSIVE ON indicator lights.
³PROGRESSIVE ON is canceled if you press the button again. The
indicator goes out.

Marking places to play
again—MARKER
Remote control only
You can mark specific points on a disc to return to later. This feature
only works if the elapsed playing time of the disc is shown on the
unit’s display.
[DVD-A] [DVD-V] [VCD] [CD]
Press [MARKER].
The marker icon appears.
Press [MARKER] at the point you want
to mark.
To select another marker, press the cursor button [1].
You can mark up to 5 points.
[RAM]
You can mark up to 999 points.
1 Press [MARKER].
The marker icon appears and if the disc already has markers,
they are displayed.
2 Press the cursor button [1] to high-
light the first marker, then press
[MARKER] at the point you want to
mark.
To mark the eleventh point and beyond
Select the next group of 10 as follows.
1. Press the cursor button [2, 1] to highlight the marker pin icon.
2. Press the cursor button [3] to select “11–20”.
You can select the next group of 10 when the current group is full.
To clear the marker display
Press [RETURN].
To play from a marked position
Press the cursor button [2, 1] to select a marker number and press
[ENTER].
To clear a marker
Press the cursor button [2, 1] to select a marker number and press
[CANCEL].
³You can clear existing markers, but they are restored when you
open the disc tray or switch the unit to standby.
Note
³All the markers added with this unit are cleared when the unit is
switched to standby or the disc tray is opened.
[RAM]
³This feature doesn’t work while using a play list.
³The markers are ordered by time. This means that the marker
numbers can change when you add and erase markers.

To exit random mode

Note

³“Total Time” tells you the total time of the programmed

5 Press [1] (PLAY).
Play now begins in the programmed sequence.
To add or change tracks
1. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to select an available item.
2. Repeat steps 2–4 to make the changes.
To move to the page before or after the one shown
Press [6] or [5].
To clear the programmed tracks one by one
Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to select the item number (No) and
press [CANCEL]. Alternatively, press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2,
1] to select “Clear” and press [ENTER].
To clear the whole program
Press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2, 1] to select “Clear all” and
press
[ENTER].
The whole program is also cleared when the unit is turned off, or the
disc tray is opened.
To exit the program mode
Press [PLAY MODE] while stopped until the program play screen
disappears.
³The program is retained in memory.
Note
If you select bonus groups on DVD-Audio during program play, you
will have to enter a 4-digit password (➡ page 15).

Selecting programs to play—
DIRECT NAVIGATOR
When a program list is recorded on the disc, you can use it to find
programs you want to watch and start play.
1 Press [DIRECT NAVI].
The program list is displayed and the program currently
selected plays in the background.
2 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to
select the program you want to watch.
You can also select a program with the numeric buttons.
Step 3 is unnecessary.
To enter a 2-digit number
Example: 17, press, [S10] ➡ [1] ➡ [7].
3 Press [1] (PLAY) or [ENTER].
Play of the program that was playing in the background
continues.
To clear the program list
Press [DIRECT NAVI].
(The unit returns to the condition it was in before you called up the
program list.)
To display information about a selected program
1. Do steps 1 and 2 to select the program, then press the cursor
button [1] to select “Contents” on the right side of the list.
2. Press [ENTER].
The background picture pauses. Press [ENTER] to return to the pro-
gram list.
If there are 6 or more programs
Press the cursor button [4] while program 5 is highlighted.
The programs not currently shown are displayed each time you
press the cursor button.
For your reference
³Program and disc titles are displayed only if they have been
entered.
³You cannot change program and disc titles.
e.g. when program 2 has been selected.

Using the play list menu to play
specific scenes
Finding and playing particular scenes is simple if the disc has play
lists recorded on it.
1 Press [PLAY LIST].
The play list screen is displayed.
2 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to
select the play list you want to watch.
³If you press [ENTER] or select a play list with the numeric
buttons, all the scenes in the play list are played from the
beginning.
3 Press the cursor button [1] to select
“Contents” on the right side of the list
and press [ENTER].
4 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to
select “Scene List” and press
[ENTER].
5 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2,
1] to select the scene you want to
watch and press [ENTER].
The scene starts playing.
³You cannot move the highlighting to places where a scene
is not displayed.
³If there are more than 9 scenes in the play list, press the
cursor buttons [3, 4, 2, 1] to select “Next” and press
[ENTER]. You can move back to the previous page by se-
lecting “Prev”.
To display information about a selected play list
1. Do steps 1 and 2 to select the play list.
2. Press the cursor button [1] to select “Contents” on the right side
of the list and press [ENTER].
3. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to select “Program contents”
and press [ENTER].
When play finishes
³After playing a play list: the play list selection screen appears.
³After playing a scene: the scene selection screen appears.
To return to the previous screen
Press [RETURN].
To clear the play list screen
Press [PLAY LIST].
The unit returns to the condition it was in before you called up the
play list.
To stop play list play
Press [º] until the screens clear.

A-B repeat play
You can repeat a section between points A and B within a program,
title, or track.
1 During play
Press [A-B] at the starting point (A).
2 Press [A-B] at the finishing point (B).
To cancel
Press [A-B] until “” is displayed.
Note
³A-B repeat does not work if the DVD’s elapsed play time is not
shown on the unit’s display.
³Some subtitles recorded around point A or B may fail to appear.
³The unit automatically determines the end of a program/title/track
as point B when the end of the program/title/track is reached.

Some DVDs have multiple soundtracks, subtitle languages and
camera angles, and you can change these during play.

Soundtracks
[RAM] [DVD-A] [DVD-V]

Press [AUDIO].
The number changes each time you press the button.
³Play restarts from the beginning of the soundtrack when playing
DVD-Audio and DVD-RAM soundtracks that are accompanied by
still pictures.
³Even if a second soundtrack isn’t recorded on a DVD-Audio, two
soundtrack numbers will normally be shown when you press
[AUDIO]. The soundtrack currently playing is number 1.
³You can also use this button to turn the vocals on and off on kara-
oke discs. Read the disc’s instructions for details.

Subtitles

With DVD-Audio and DVD-Video you can change the subtitle lan-
guage and turn the subtitles on and off. With DVD-RAM you can turn
the subtitles on and off.

³You can also press the cursor button [3, 4] or use the nu-
meric buttons to change the soundtracks, subtitle languag-
es and angles.
³Some discs allow changes to soundtracks, subtitle lan-
guages and angles only by using the disc’s menus.
³Soundtrack and subtitle languages can be set before play
(➡ page 29, Disc—Audio and Subtitle).
³“–” or “––” is displayed instead of the language number in
circumstances such as when no language is recorded on
the disc.
³Some discs allow you to set angles before multi-angle
scenes are played. Read the instructions that come with the
DVD.
³In some cases, the subtitle language is not changed to the
selected one immediately.
³If the subtitles overlap closed captions recorded on discs,
turn the subtitles off.

Remote control only
On-Screen Menu Icons are menus that contain information about
the disc or unit. These menus allow you to perform operations by
changing this information.
Common procedures
1 Press [ON SCREEN].

For your reference
³Depending on the condition of the unit (playing, stopped, etc.) and
the type of disc you are playing, there are some items that you
cannot select or change.
³When numbers are displayed (e.g. title No.), the numeric buttons
are also effective for setting. When numbers are entered with the
numeric buttons, press [ENTER] to register the setting.
To clear the icons
Press [RETURN] until the menus disappear.
º To change the position of the icons
You can lower the position of the icons on the screen if they are cut
off for some reason. There are 5 positions to choose from.
1. Press the cursor buttons [2, 1] to select the rightmost icon.
2. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to move the icons.

The unit saves the settings you make with the user mode for each disc so when you play a disc again and select a user mode, the same settings
are selected. Discs you play for the first time use the previous settings. The unit can save settings for up to 200 discs. The settings for a disc are
not saved if you switch to normal, soft, fine, or cinema mode before opening the disc tray or switching the unit to standby.

Change the settings to suit your preferences and to suit the unit to
the environment in which it is being used.
These settings are retained in memory until they are changed, even
if the unit is turned off.

When changing ratings (When the level is 0 to 7)
The password screen is shown when you select “Ratings”.
1. Input your 4-digit password with the numeric buttons and press
[ENTER].
2. Select the item with the cursor buttons [3,4] and press [EN-
TER], and follow the on-screen instructions .
When setting ratings (When the level is 8)
The password screen is shown when you select levels 0 to 7.
1. Input a 4-digit password with the numeric buttons and press
[ENTER].
³If you enter a wrong number, press [CANCEL] to erase it before
you press [ENTER].
The lock symbol appears closed to show the rating is locked.
Do not forget your password.
2. Press [ENTER] to confirm the 4 digits.
Now, when you insert a DVD-Video that exceeds the ratings
limit you set, a message appears on the television.

[DVD-V] (Dolby Digital, center and rear speakers only)
For optimum listening with 5.1-channel sound, all the speakers, ex-
cept for the subwoofer, should be the same distance from the seat-
ing position. If you have to place the center or rear speakers closer
to the seating position, adjust the delay time to make up for the dif-
ference.
If distance @ (from the center speaker) and B (from the rear speak-
ers) are the same as or greater than A (from the main speakers),
leave the delay time as “0”, the factory preset.
If either distance @ or B is less than A, find the difference in the
relevant table and change to the recommended setting.
Changing the delay time
1. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2, 1] to select the delay
time box and press [ENTER].
2. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to adjust the delay time and
press [ENTER].
Speaker balance (?)
1. Press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2, 1] to select “Test” and
press [ENTER].
A test signal is output from one speaker at a time, starting with
the main left speaker and proceeding clockwise.

Digital output
Change these settings when you have connected equipment
through this unit’s DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminals (OPTICAL or
COAXIAL).
Refer also to Common procedures (➡ page 28) and the Audio sec-
tion in Summary of settings (➡ page 29).
PCM Down Conversion
Select how to output the high-quality audio signals (sampling fre-
quencies of 96 kHz and 88.2 kHz) on discs that do not have copy-
right
protection. Choose the settings to suit the equipment you have con-
nected.

I/P/B
MPEG, the video compression standard adopted for use with
DVD-Video, codes frames using these 3 picture types.
I: Intra coded picture (I-picture)
This is the standard picture and is a complete picture in itself.
This means it has the best picture quality and is the best to
use when adjusting the picture.
P: Predictive coded picture (P-picture)
This picture is calculated based on past I or P-pictures.
B: Bidirectionally-predictive coded picture (B-picture)
This picture is calculated by comparing past and future I and
P-pictures so it has the lowest volume of information.
Linear PCM (pulse code modulation)
PCM is the usual digital method used for music CDs. DVDs have a
greater volume so they use linear PCM, which has a higher sam-
pling rate. Compressed PCM signals are called packed PCM
(PPCM).
Optical digital audio cable
This cable carries optical digital signals to the amplifier to reduce
noise caused by electronic interference.
Pan&Scan/Letterbox
In general, DVD-Video are produced with the intention that they be
viewed on a widescreen television with an aspect ratio of 16:9. This
means you can view most material with the intended aspect ratio on
a widescreen television.
Material with this ratio will not fit onto a standard television with an
aspect ratio of 4:3. Two styles of picture, “Pan&Scan” and “Letter-
box”, deal with this problem.
Pan&Scan: The sides are cut off so the picture fills the screen.
Letterbox: Black bands appear at the top and bottom of the picture
so the picture itself appears in an aspect ratio of 16:9.
Playback control (PBC)
If a Video CD has “playback control” written on it or its jacket, it
means that particular scenes or information can be selected for
viewing interactively with the television using the menu screen. This
unit can play Video CDs with playback control.
Using menus to control play of a Video CD is called “menu play” in
these operating instructions.
Play list
This is a collection of scenes. It enables you to play these scenes in
succession or to select specific ones to play.
Program
This is a division on DVD-RAM.
Direct navigator
This is a list of programs you have recorded. You can select pro-
grams from the list to view. The list also shows the date and time of
recording, the channel, and the titles of titled programs. The select-
ed program is played in the background, making selection even sim-
pler.
Sampling rate
This is the number of samples of sound taken per second during
conversion to a digital signal. Sampling frequency is expressed in
kilohertz (kHz). A high sampling frequency results in a sound close
to the original when played back.
Title/Chapter
DVD-Video are divided up into large sections, titles, and smaller
sections, chapters. The numbers allocated to these sections are
called title numbers and chapter numbers.
Track
This is the smallest division on DVD-Audio, CD, and Video CD, and
usually equates to a single song.
Bitstream
This is the digital form of multiple channel audio data (e.g., 5.1 chan-
nel) before it is decoded into its various channels.
Decoder
A decoder restores the coded signals on DVDs to normal. This is
called decoding.
Dolby Digital
This is a method of coding digital signals developed by Dolby Labo-
ratories. Apart from stereo (2-channel) audio, these signals can also
be 5.1-channel audio. A large amount of audio information can be
recorded on one disc using this method.
Dolby Pro Logic
A surround system where a 4-channel audio track is recorded as
2 channels and then is restored to 4 channels for play. The surround
channel is monaural and can reproduce up to 7 kHz.
DTS (Digital Theater Systems)
This surround system is used in many movie theaters around the
world. There is good separation between the channels, so realistic
sound effects are possible.
Dynamic range
Dynamic range is the difference between the lowest level of sound
that can be heard above the noise of the equipment and the highest
level of sound before distortion occurs.
Film and video
DVDs are recorded using either film or video. Film is recorded at
24 frames per second, the rate movies are filmed at, although some
recent progressive material is recorded at 30 frames per second.
Video is recorded at 30 frames per second.
Frame still and field still
A still is shown when you pause a moving picture. A frame still is
made up of two alternating fields, so the picture may appear blurred,
but overall quality is high.
A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of a
frame still so picture quality is lower.
Frames are the still pictures that go together to make a moving pic-
ture. There are about 30 frames shown each second.
One frame is made up of two fields. A regular television shows these
fields one after the other to create frames.
Interlace and progressive output
NTSC, the video signal standard, has 480 interlaced (i) scan lines,
whereas progressive scanning uses twice the number of scan lines.
This is called 480p. The 480i video signals output from this unit’s
COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminals (Y, P
B/CB, PR/CR) allow you to
enjoy higher quality pictures than if the signals were output from the
video output terminal or S VIDEO OUT terminal. The COMPONENT
VIDEO OUT terminals are also able to handle 480p (progressive)
video signals which are of even greater resolution.

YAMAHA dealer or service center for instructions.

Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the unit itself as well as the safety suggestions listed below. Afterwards keep them handy for future reference. Getting started Safety 1. Power Source—The unit should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the unit. If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your appliance dealer or local powe r company. 2. Polarization—If the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug will fit into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug. 3. Power Cord Protection—AC power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them. Never take hold of the plug or cord if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body when connecting or disconnecting it. 4. Overloading—Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock. 5. Nonuse Periods—When the unit is not being used, turn the power off. When left unused for a long time, the unit should be unplugged from the household AC outlet. 6. Attachments—Do not use attachments not recommended by the unit manufacturer as they may cause hazards. Placement 1. Ventilation—The unit should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. Allow 10 cm (4q) clearance from the rear of the unit. 2. Foreign Material—Care should be taken so that objects do not fall into and liquids are not spilled into the unit. Do not subject this unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or shock. 3. Carts and Stands—The unit should be used only with a cart or stand that is recommended by the manufacturer. The unit and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the unit and cart combination to overturn. 4. Mounting—Any mounting of the appliance should follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer. Maintenance Disconnect this unit from the AC outlet before cleaning. Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine. Installation Environment 1. Water and Moisture—Do not use this unit near water—for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, swimming pool, or the like. Damp basements should also be avoided. 2. Condensation—Moisture may form on the lens in the following conditions… ³immediately after a heater has been turned on. ³in a steamy or very humid room. ³when the unit is suddenly moved from a cold environment to a warm one. If moisture forms inside this unit, it may not operate properly. To correct this problem, turn on the power and wait about one hour for the moisture to evaporate. 3. Heat—The unit should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators and the like. It also should not be placed in temperatures less than 5 oC (41 oF) or greater than 35 oC (95 oF). Do not place the unit on amplifiers or equipment that may become hot. The model number and serial number of this product can be found on either the back or the bottom of the unit. Read the disc’s instructions carefully. º Playing DVDs and Video CDs The producer of the material can control how these discs are played. This means that you may not be able to control play of a disc with some operations described in these operating instructions. Read the disc’s instructions carefully. º DVD-RAM discs DVD-RAM discs must meet the following conditions for this unit to be able to play them. It may not be possible to play some discs due to the condition of the recording. This unit has a DTS decoder so you can play DVDs with this mark. Note ³Remove TYPE 2 discs from their cartridges before use. Read the instructions for the disc carefully. ³Do not allow the disc to become dirty or scratched. ³Store discs in their cartridges. Be sure the label of the disc and the cartridge both face up when replacing the disc. For your reference Some parts of the disc, for example where one program ends and another begins, may not play smoothly. Do not wipe with a circular motion; wipe straight outward from the center. DVD-RAM ³Clean DVD-RAM only with the DVD-RAM/PD disc cleaner available as an optional accessory. ³Never use cloths or cleaners for CDs, etc. Do not; ³mix old and new batteries. ³use different types at the same time. ³heat or expose to flame. ³take apart or short circuit. ³attempt to recharge alkaline or manganese batteries. ³use batteries if the covering has been peeled off. Mishandling of batteries can cause electrolyte leakage which can damage items the fluid contacts and may cause a fire. If electrolyte leaks from the batteries, consult your dealer. Wash thoroughly with water if electrolyte comes in contact with any part of your body. Remove if the remote control is not going to be used for a long period of time. Store in a cool, dark place. Replace if the unit does not respond to the remote control even when held close to the front panel. º Condensation Moisture may condense on discs after being brought inside from the cold. Choose the settings to suit the equipment you have connected. Equipment Dolby Digital Bitstream (Factory preset): When you have connected a unit with a built-in Dolby Digital decoder. PCM: When you have connected a unit that doesn’t have a built-in Dolby Digital decoder.¢ DTS Digital Surround PCM (Factory preset): When you have connected a unit that doesn’t have a built-in DTS decoder.¢ Bitstream: When you have connected a unit with a built-in DTS decoder. ¢ These changes to digital audio output must be made, otherwise bitstream signals the decoder cannot handle will be output. If these signals are output, “noise” will be output which can cause harm to your ears and speakers. 33 Glossary Bitstream I/P/B This is the digital form of multiple channel audio data (e.g., 5.1 channel) before it is decoded into its various channels. MPEG, the video compression standard adopted for use with DVD-Video, codes frames using these 3 picture types. I: Intra coded picture (I-picture) This is the standard picture and is a complete picture in itself. This means it has the best picture quality and is the best to use when adjusting the picture. P: Predictive coded picture (P-picture) This picture is calculated based on past I or P-pictures. B: Bidirectionally-predictive coded picture (B-picture) This picture is calculated by comparing past and future I and P-pictures so it has the lowest volume of information. Decoder A decoder restores the coded signals on DVDs to normal. This is called decoding. Dolby Digital This is a method of coding digital signals developed by Dolby Laboratories. Apart from stereo (2-channel) audio, these signals can also be 5.1-channel audio. A large amount of audio information can be recorded on one disc using this method. Linear PCM (pulse code modulation) Dolby Pro Logic A surround system where a 4-channel audio track is recorded as 2 channels and then is restored to 4 channels for play. The surround channel is monaural and can reproduce up to 7 kHz. PCM is the usual digital method used for music CDs. DVDs have a greater volume so they use linear PCM, which has a higher sampling rate. Compressed PCM signals are called packed PCM (PPCM). DTS (Digital Theater Systems) Optical digital audio cable This surround system is used in many movie theaters around the world. There is good separation between the channels, so realistic sound effects are possible. This cable carries optical digital signals to the amplifier to reduce noise caused by electronic interference. Pan&Scan/Letterbox Dynamic range DVDs are recorded using either film or video. Film is recorded at 24 frames per second, the rate movies are filmed at, although some recent progressive material is recorded at 30 frames per second. Video is recorded at 30 frames per second. In general, DVD-Video are produced with the intention that they be viewed on a widescreen television with an aspect ratio of 16:9. This means you can view most material with the intended aspect ratio on a widescreen television. Material with this ratio will not fit onto a standard television with an aspect ratio of 4:3. Two styles of picture, “Pan&Scan” and “Letterbox”, deal with this problem. Pan&Scan: The sides are cut off so the picture fills the screen. Letterbox: Black bands appear at the top and bottom of the picture so the picture itself appears in an aspect ratio of 16:9. Frame still and field still Playback control (PBC) A still is shown when you pause a moving picture. A frame still is made up of two alternating fields, so the picture may appear blurred, but overall quality is high. A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of a frame still so picture quality is lower. Frames are the still pictures that go together to make a moving picture. There are about 30 frames shown each second. One frame is made up of two fields. A regular television shows these fields one after the other to create frames. If a Video CD has “playback control” written on it or its jacket, it means that particular scenes or information can be selected for viewing interactively with the television using the menu screen. This unit can play Video CDs with playback control. Using menus to control play of a Video CD is called “menu play” in these operating instructions. Dynamic range is the difference between the lowest level of sound that can be heard above the noise of the equipment and the highest level of sound before distortion occurs. Reference Film and video Play list This is a collection of scenes. It enables you to play these scenes in succession or to select specific ones to play. Interlace and progressive output NTSC, the video signal standard, has 480 interlaced (i) scan lines, whereas progressive scanning uses twice the number of scan lines. This is called 480p. The 480i video signals output from this unit’s COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminals (Y, PB/CB, PR/CR) allow you to enjoy higher quality pictures than if the signals were output from the video output terminal or S VIDEO OUT terminal. The COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminals are also able to handle 480p (progressive) video signals which are of even greater resolution. Program This is a division on DVD-RAM. Direct navigator This is a list of programs you have recorded. You can select programs from the list to view. The list also shows the date and time of recording, the channel, and the titles of titled programs. The selected program is played in the background, making selection even simpler. Sampling rate This is the number of samples of sound taken per second during conversion to a digital signal. Sampling frequency is expressed in kilohertz (kHz). A high sampling frequency results in a sound close to the original when played back. Title/Chapter DVD-Video are divided up into large sections, titles, and smaller sections, chapters. The numbers allocated to these sections are called title numbers and chapter numbers. Track This is the smallest division on DVD-Audio, CD, and Video CD, and usually equates to a single song. 34 Troubleshooting guide Before requesting service for this player, check the chart below for a possible cause of the problem you are experiencing. Some simple checks or a minor adjustment on your part may eliminate the problem and restore proper operation. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, contact your authorized YAMAHA dealer or service center for instructions. Power No power. ³Insert the AC power supply cord securely into the household AC outlet. 9 The unit is automatically switched to the standby mode. ³To conserve power, the unit automatically switches to standby after approximately 30 minutes in the stop mode. Turn the power back to ON. No response when buttons pressed. ³Some operations may be prohibited by the disc. ³The unit may not be operating properly due to lightning, static electricity or some other external factor. Reset procedure: Press [STANDBY/ON] to switch the unit to the standby mode and then back to ON. Play starts but then stops immediately. ³Condensation has formed: Wait 1 to 2 hours for it to evaporate. ³This unit cannot play discs other than DVD-RAM, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Video CD and CD. 5 ³This unit cannot play DVD-Video with a region number other than “1”, “ALL” or multiple region numbers including “1”. 5 ³The disc may be dirty and may require cleaning. 6 ³Ensure that the disc is installed with the label of the side to be played facing upwards. < ³Check that the DVD-RAM has something recorded on it. Alternative languages fail to be selected. ³An alternative language is not selected with discs which do not contain more than one language. ³In the case of some discs, the alternative language cannot be selected with [AUDIO] or [SUBTITLE]. Try selecting it from the disc’s menu if one is available. = No subtitles. ³Subtitles appear only with discs that contain them. ³Subtitles are cleared from the television. Display the subtitles. G ³Some subtitles recorded around point A or B may fail to appear. E Soundtrack and/or subtitle language is not the one selected with the SET UP menus. ³The language is not recorded on the disc. Angle cannot be changed. ³This function is dependent on software availability. Even if a disc has a number of angles recorded, these angles may be recorded for specific scenes only. G You have forgotten your ratings password. Reset all the settings to Factory Preset. ³While stopped, press and hold [,] and [;] on the unit and then also press and hold [<] on the unit until “Initialized” disappears from the television. Turn the unit off and on again. All settings will return to the default values. Reference Operation Sound No sound. Distorted sound. Piercing noise comes from the speakers. ³Check the connections. 9 : ; ³Check the volume on the equipment you have connected. ³Ensure that the input settings for the television and stereo system are correct. ³If you have connected this unit to an amplifier through the AUDIO OUT terminals, go to the Audio menu in the SET UP menus, and change “Speaker Setting” to suit your speakers. Select the large or small icon for all the speakers you have connected. P ³Turn Virtual Surround off if it causes distortion. F ³Output from this unit will be in stereo (two channels) when Virtual Surround is on. Turn Virtual Surround off if you are using three or more speakers. F ³Due to the specifications on some types of televisions, both video and audio may be cut off when you turn the VIDEO OFF feature on. ? ³If the “D.MIX” indicator on the FL display goes out while playing a multi-channel DVD-Audio disc, sound will only be output from speakers specified by the disc. Read the disc’s instructions for details. ³If you have connected this unit to other equipment through the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminal, ensure you have selected the correct settings for “Dolby Digital” and “DTS Digital Surround” in the SET UP menu’s Audio menu. Q 35 Troubleshooting guide Picture Picture distorted. ³Some distortion is normal during SEARCH. ³The screen may be disrupted briefly when you turn off the VIDEO OFF feature. ? No picture. ³Ensure that the equipment is connected properly. 9 ; ³Make sure the television is on. ³Ensure the television’s video input setting (e.g., VIDEO 1) is correct. ³If “This disc is PAL system. The output is sound only.” is on the television, then you have loaded a PAL system DVD-Audio and only the audio portion of the disc can be played. The picture shown on the television is not normal. (The sides of the picture are cut off or black bands appear at the top and bottom of the screen.) ³Go to the Video menu in the SET UP menus, and change “TV Aspect” to suit your television. You may also need to change the screen mode on the television itself. O ³If you are using progressive output, try changing 4:3 ASPECT and Shift Position with the onscreen menu icons. K ³Ensure that the unit is not connected through a video cassette recorder. 9 ³You cannot view progressive video if your television is not designed to receive progressive signals. Press [PROGRESSIVE ON] to turn PROGRESSIVE ON off. ? There is ghosting when progressive output is on. ³Turn PROGRESSIVE ON off. This problem is caused by the editing method or material used on the DVD, but should be corrected if you use interlace output. ? Colors are strange. ³Check the setting for output with the on-screen menu icons. K Picture quality is poor. ³Check the settings in the on-screen menu’s video menu. K There is a lot of ghosting. ³Use the on-screen menu icons to adjust the picture quality. K Reference Displays “No Play” appears on the unit’s display. ³You inserted a disc the unit cannot play; insert one it can. 5 ³You inserted a blank DVD-RAM. No on-screen display. ³Go to Display in the SET UP menus, and select “On” for “On-Screen Messages”. M On-Screen Menu Icons not displayed or only partially displayed on the television. ³Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] while the rightmost icon is highlighted to move them down. H The disc’s menu is displayed in a different language. ³Go to Disc in the SET UP menus, and select the preferred language for “Menus”. M No menu play. ³Menus are only displayed if they are recorded on the disc. “Check The Disc” appears on the unit’s display. ³Disc is dirty. Wipe the disc clean. 6 “Error” appears on the unit’s display. ³The track playing has been recorded with a nonstandard system. “H··” appears on the unit’s display. ³Trouble is likely to have occurred.
