TSA 230

WARNING
Inhalation of airborne crystalline silica
can cause serious or fatal injury or
illness, such as kidney disease and
respiratory diseases, including silicosis
and lung cancer. To reduce the risk of
serious or fatal illness, including kidney
disease, respiratory disease and
cancer, the operator and any bystanders
should always wear a respirator that is
approved by NIOSH for the material
being cut and appropriate for worksite-
specific conditions if wet cutting at the
flow rate recommended in this
instruction manual is not utilized or
cannot be confirmed. The respirator
must have an Assigned Protection
Factor sufficient to provide the level of
respiratory protection needed for the
material being cut and worksite-specific
conditions. Even if wet cutting at the
recommended flow rate:
– An operator who is working with the
machine indoors or in an enclosed
area, along with any bystanders,
should always wear a NIOSH-
approved respirator that is rated for
the material being cut and
appropriate for worksite-specific
conditions.
– An operator who is working with the
machine outdoors for more than two
hours in one day, along with any
bystanders, should always wear a
NIOSH-approved respirator that is
rated for the material being cut and
appropriate for worksite-specific
conditions.
To reduce the risk of serious or fatal
respiratory disease or other illness when
using the TSA 230 with a dust extractor
to cut concrete, masonry, stone or other
materials that may have silica in their
composition: the operator and any
bystanders should always wear a
respirator that is approved by NIOSH for
the material being cut that has an
Assigned Protection Factor sufficient to
provide the necessary level of protection
for worksite-specific conditions.
Consult your employer for information
relating to the respirator needed for the
material you are cutting and your
worksite-specific conditions. Your
employer is likely to have in place an
OSHA-required respiratory protection
program and can provide information
regarding the type and level of
respiratory protection needed for your
worksite. Information also is available
from OSHA at www.OSHA.gov.
See the section on “Respiratory
Protection” in the chapter “Sample
Applications” in this instruction manual.
Consult and follow any federal, state or
local laws or regulations with respect to
dry and wet cutting, including any
requirements for engineering controls,
work practices and respiratory
protection to reduce exposure to
respirable crystalline silica or other
potentially harmful substances.
WARNING
Breathing asbestos dust is dangerous
and can cause severe or fatal injury,
respiratory illness or cancer. The use
and disposal of asbestos-containing
products have been strictly regulated by
OSHA and the Environmental Protection
Agency. Do not use your cut-off machine
to cut or disturb asbestos, asbestos-
containing products, or products such as
pipes which are wrapped or covered
with asbestos insulation. If you have any
reason to believe that you might be
cutting asbestos, immediately contact
your employer or a local OSHA
representative.
Working with a Depth Limiter
A depth limiter with dust extraction
adapter is available as a special
accessory for the STIHL TSA 230. It is
useful for making steady, precise and
depth-limited cuts.
When dry cutting, a dust extractor
(vacuum) can be attached for limited
dust suppression purposes. An
international standard (IEC 60335-2-
69:2012 states in § 22AA.201)
recommends that a dust extractor used
for picking up mineral dust such as silica
(from cutting concrete, masonry and
stone, for example) should be at least a
“Class M” machine (i.e., Class M or the
higher “Class H”).
Such an extractor will only be able to
reduce the amount of dust when the
TSA is operated using certain specific
methods, e.g., when pulling the machine
towards the operator and when making
plunge cuts (for more details, see the
Safety Precautions and Use Instructions
that accompany this accessory). It will
not, however, eliminate such dust, or the
need to wear appropriate respiratory
protection.
