Preparation

Operation

1. Beforestartingthismachine,reviewthe"Safety

instructions".Failuretofollowtheserulesmayresultin

seriousinjurytotheoperatoror bystanders.

2. Neverleavethismachineunattendedwiththeengine

running.

3. Donotoperatemachinewhileundertheinfluenceof

alcohol,drugs,or medication.

4. Neverallowanyonetooperatethismachinewithout

properinstruction.

5. Alwaysoperatethismachinewithall safetyequipment

inplaceandworking.Makesureallcontrolsare

properlyadjustedforsafeoperation.

6. Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingsor

overspeedtheengine.Thegovernorcontrolsthe

maximumsafeoperatingspeedoftheengine.

7. Whenloadinga log,alwaysplaceyourhandsonthe

sidesofthelog,noton theends,andneveruseyour

footto helpstabilizea log.Failuretodo so,mayresult

incrushedoramputatedfingers,toes,hand,orfoot.

8. Useonlyyourhandto operatethecontrols.

9. Neverattemptto splitmorethanonelogata time

unlesstheramhasfullyextendedanda secondlogis

neededtocompletetheseparationofthefirstlog.

10.Forlogswhicharenotcutsquare,theleastsquare

endandthe longestportionofthelogshouldbe

placedtowardthebeamand wedge,andthe square

end placedtowardtheendplate.

11.Alwayskeepfingersawayfromanycracksthatopen

inthelogwhilesplitting.Theycanquicklycloseand

pinchoramputateyourfingers.

12.Keepyourworkareaclean,immediatelyremovesplit

woodaroundthemachinesoyoudo notstumbleover

it.

13.Nevermovethismachinewhiletheengineisrunning.

14.Thismachineshouldnotbe towedonanystreet,

highway,or publicroadbehinda vehicle.

Maintenance and Storage

1. Stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplugand

grounditagainsttheenginebeforecleaning,or

inspectingthemachine.

2. Stoptheengineand relievehydraulicsystempressure

beforerepairingor adjustingfittings,hoses,tubing,or

othersystemcomponents.

engineandmufflerareas,iftheengineisequipped

witha sparkarrestermuffler,cleanand inspectit

regularlyaccordingtomanufacturersinstructions.

Replaceifdamaged.

Periodicallycheckthatall nutsandbolts,hose

removed.

6. Thepressurereliefvalveispresetatthefactory.Do

notadjustthevalve.

7. Neverattempttomovethismachineoverhillyor

uneventerrainwithoutadequatehelp.

Preparing the Log Splitter

iMPORTANT:Thelogsplitterisshippedwithouthydraulic

fluidin thereservoirtank. YouMUSTaddfluidbefore

operating.Proceedwiththefollowingsteps:

1. Removeoilplug,whichislocatedontheendofthe

Figure 3-1 beamassembly.SeeFigure3-1.

2. Tiltunitbackandadd1.5gallonsofhydraulicfluid

(Dexron®III,or10weightAWhydraulicoil).

3. Replaceandtightenoil plug.

4. Lowerunittolevelground.

IMPORTANT:Maximumfluidlevelwillnotbeachieved

untilcylinderiscycled(SeeOperating Your LogSplit-

ter). Checkwhenfluidiscoldandwithunitlevel.Never

runbelowthislevel- pumpwillberuined.

IMPORTANT:Thisunitisshippedwithoutgasolineor oil

in theengine.Fillupgasolineandoil BEFOREpriming

pumpor operatingyourlogsplitter.

5. Addoil providedbeforeprimingpumporstartingunit

forthefirsttimeoutofthebox.SeeEngineOperation

sectionforthisandforlocationoftheoilfill.

6. Servicetheenginewith gasolineasinstructedinthe

EngineOperationsection. See EngineOperation

Safety Switch

Thesafetyswitchisintendedtopreventtheoperator

fromstartingtheenginewithoutthecylinderbeingin the

Starter Rope

Thestarterropeislocatedontheengine.SeeFigure4-1.

Engine Switch

Theengineswitchis locatedon theengine.Turniton

1. Removelockingpin fromcylinderstorageposition.

2. Usehandleto slidecylinderrearwardintotheoperat-

ing"Lock"position,engagingthesafetyswitch,and

reinsertlockingpin.See Figure4-3.

3. Placethelog splitteronlevel,dry,andsolidground.

4. Pulloutthechokeknoblocatedon theengine.See

Figure4-4 inset.

NOTE:Useofthechokemaynot benecessaryifthe

engineiswarmor theair temperatureishigh.

5. Turnengineswitchtoon.SeeFigure4-4inset.

6. Pullthestartergriplightlyuntilresistanceisfelt,

thenpullrapidlytoovercomecompression,prevent

kickbackandstartengine.SeeFigure4-4.If engine

doesnotstartaftertensecondsofrepeatedpulls,wait

a fewminutesand repeat.

IMPORTANT:Donotallowthestartergriptosnap

backagainsttheropeguide.Returnitgentlytoprevent

damagetothe starter.

7. Whenenginewarmsup,pushinthechokeknob.

8. Usethehydraulicvalvecontroltoextendandretract

cylinder4-6 cyclesto removetrappedairinthe

system.

Using the Log Splitter

IMPORTANT:Alwaysoperateonlevelground,otherwise

fluidmaybeforcedoutthroughtheair venthole.

1. Blockthefrontandbackofbothwheels.

2. Placethelogagainstthesplittingwedge.Onlysplit

woodinthedirectionofthegrain.

3. Stabilizelog,ifneeded,with yourlefthandonthe

sideof thelog only.Neverplacehand on the end

between the log and the ram.

IMPORTANT:Onlyoneadultshouldstabilizethelog and

operatethehydraulicvalvecontrol,sotheoperatorhas

fullcontroloverthelogandtheram.

4. MovehydraulicvalvecontrolFORWARDuntilram

toucheslog.Releasethehydraulicvalvecontrolto

NEUTRALpositionto stopthe rammovement.See

Figure4-5.

5. Removeyourlefthandfromlog.Movehydraulicvalve

controlFORWARDto splitlog.

6. MovehydraulicvalvecontrolBACKtofully retractthe

ramtothelockedposition.

Hydraulic Fluid

• Checkthehydraulicfluidlevelin thelogsplitter

reservoirtankbeforeeachuse.Maintainfluidlevelto

just belowtheoil plug.

• Havethehydraulicfluidinthe reservoirchangedevery

100hoursofoperation.Seeyourauthorizedservice

dealertohavethehydraulicfluidchanged.

Beam and Splitting Wedge

• Lubricatetopandbottomof thebeam(whereitcomes

intocontactwiththecylinder),beforeeachuse,with

engineoil.

Hose Clamps (if Equipped)

• Check,beforeeachuse,ifhoseclampsonthesuction

hose(attachedtothesideofthepump)aretight.

helpergraspthefrontoftheunitandcarefullytilt it

backtoexposethebeltdriveunderneath.

IMPORTANT:Topreventengineoil fromentering

carburetorand/orhydraulicoilfromescapingthroughthe

air venthole,do nottilt unittotheside.

6. Whileyourpartnercontinuestoholdtheunitup,grasp

theidlerpulleynutwitha9/16hexwrenchor socket

and pivottheidlerbracketasshownin Figure5-2.

Thiswillenablethebelttobeeasilyremovedfromthe

idlerpulley.

WARNING:Avoidthe possibilityof

a pinchinginjury.Donot placeyour

fingers on the idlerspringor between

the beltand a pulleywhile removingthe

belt.

7. Removethebeltfromaroundtheengineandpump

pulleys.

8. Routethe newbeltaroundthethreepulleysasshown

in Figure5-2.

NOTE:Idlerbracketmustpivotfreely.

9. Haveyourpartnerlowerunitandremountthebelt

coverremovedearlier.Donotovertighten.

10.Removepieceof plasticfromgascap(ifused).

11.Reconnectsparkplug.

Storing Your Log Splitter

Removing From Storage

TheU.S.EPAandMTDarepleasedtoexplaintheemissionscontrolsystemwarrantyonyourmodelyear2005and latersmalloff-roadengine.

Newsmalloff-roadenginesmustbedesigned,builtandequippedtomeetthestringentanti-smogstandards.MTDmustwarrantytheemission

controlsystemonyourenginefortheperiodoftimelistedbelow,providedtherehasbeennoabuse,neglector impropermaintenanceofyoursmall

off-roadengine.

Youremissioncontrolsystemmayincludepartssuchasthecarburetor,aircleaner,ignitionsystem,exhaustsystem,andotherassociatedemis-

sion-relatedcomponents.

Whereawarrantableconditionexists,MTDwillrepairyoursmalloff-roadengineatnocosttoyourincludingdiagnosis,partsandlabor.

MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY COVERAGE:

Thisemissionscontrolsystemiswarrantedfortwoyears.If anyemission-relatedpartonyourengineisdefective,thepartwillbe repairedor

replacedbyMTD.

OWNER'S WARRANTY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Asthesmalloff-roadengineowner,youare responsiblefortheperformanceofthe requiredmaintenancelistedinyourOwner'sManual.MTD

recommendsthatyouretainall yourreceiptscoveringmaintenancesonyoursmalloff-roadengine,butMTDcannotdenywarrantysolelyforthe

lackofreceiptsor foryourfailureto ensuretheperformancetoall scheduledmaintenance.

Asthesmalloff-roadengineowner,youshouldhoweverbeawarethatMTDmaydenyyourwarrantycoverageifyoursmalloff-roadengineor part

hasfaileddue toabuse,neglect,impropermaintenanceor unapprovedmodifications.

Youare responsibleforpresentingyoursmalloff-roadenginetoan AuthorizedMTDServiceDealeras soonasa problemexists.Thewarranted

DEFECTS WARRANTY REQUIREMENTS FOR 1995 AND LATER SMALL OFF=ROAD ENGINES:

Thissectionappliesto 1995and latersmalloff-roadengines.Thewarrantyperiodbeginson thedatetheengineorequipmentisdeliveredtoan

ultimatepurchaser.

(a) GeneralEmissionsWarrantyCoveracj#_

MTDmustwarranttotheultimatepurchaserandeachsubsequentpurchaserthattheengineis:

(1)Designed,built,andequippedsoastoconformwithallapplicableregulationsadoptedbytheAir ResourcesBoardpursuanttoitsauthorityin

Chapters1and2,Part5,Division26oftheHealthandSafetyCode;and

(2) Freefromdefectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipthatcausethefailureofa warrantedparttobe identicalinall materialrespectstothepartas

describedintheenginemanufacturer'sapplicationforcertificationforaperiodoftwoyears.

.(b)Thewarrantyonemissions-relatedpartswillbe interpretedasfollows:

(1)AnywarrantedpartthatisnotscheduledforreplacementasrequiredmaintenanceinthewritteninstructionsrequiredbySubsection(c)

mustbewarrantedforthewarrantyperioddefinedinSubsection(a)(2).If anysuchpartfailsduringtheperiodofwarrantycoverage,itmustbe

repairedor replacedbyMTDaccordingto Subsection(4)below.Anysuchpartrepairedor replacedunderthewarrantymustbewarrantedfor

theremainingwarrantyperiod.

(2)Anywarrantedpartthat isscheduledonlyfor regularinspectioninthewritteninstructionsrequiredbySubsection(c)mustbewarrantedfor

thewarrantyperioddefinedinSubsection(a)(2).A statementinsuchwritteninstructionstotheeffectof"repairor replaceasnecessary"will

notreducetheperiodofwarrantycoverage.Anysuchpartrepairedor replacedunderwarrantymustbe warrantedforthe remainingwarranty

period.

(3) Anywarrantedpartthat whichisscheduledforreplacementas requiredmaintenanceinthewritteninstructionsrequiredbySubsection(c)

mustbewarrantedfortheperiodoftimepriortothefirstscheduledreplacementpointforthatpart.Ifthe partfailspriortothefirstscheduled

replacement,thepartmustbe repairedor replacedby MTDaccordingtoSubsection(4) below.Anysuchpartrepairedor replacedunder

warrantymustbewarrantedfortheremainderoftheperiodpriorto thefirstscheduledreplacementpointforthepart.

(4) Repairorreplacementofanywarrantedpartunderthewarrantyprovisionsofthisarticlemustbe performedatnochargetotheownerata

warrantystation.

(5) Notwithstandingtheprovisionsof Subsection(4)above,warrantyservicesor repairsmustbeprovidedatall MTDdistributioncentersthat

arefranchisedto servicethesubjectengines.

(6) Theownermustnotbechargedfordiagnosticlaborthatleadstothedeterminationthata warrantedpartisinfactdefective,providedthat

suchdiagnosticworkisperformedata warrantystation.

(7)Theenginemanufacturerisliablefordamagestootherenginecomponentsproximatelycausedbya failureunderwarrantyof anywarranted

part.

(8) Throughouttheengine'swarrantyperioddefinedinSubsection(a)(2),MTDwillmaintaina supplyofwarrantedpartssufficienttomeetthe

expecteddemandforsuchparts.

(9) Anyreplacementpartmaybe usedin theperformanceofanywarrantymaintenanceor repairsandmustbe providedwithoutchargetothe

owner.SuchusewillnotreducethewarrantyobligationsofMTD.

(10)Add-onormodifiedpartsthatarenotexemptedbytheAir ResourcesBoardmaynotbeused.Theuseof anynon-exemptedadd-onor

modifiedpartsshallbegroundsfordisallowinga warrantyclaimmadeinaccordancewiththisarticle.Theenginemanufacturershallnotbe

liableunderthisarticletowarrantfailuresof warrantedpartscausedbytheuseof non-exemptedadd-onor modifiedpart.

MANUFACTURER'S LiMiTED WARRANTY FOR

The limited warranty set forth below isgiven by MTD LLCwith

respect to new merchandise purchased and usedin the United States

and/or its territories and possessions, and by MTD Products Limited

with respect to new merchandise purchased and used in Canadaand/

or its territories and possessions (either entity respectively, "MTD").

"MTD" warrants this product (excluding its Normal WearPartsand

Attachments as described below) against defects in material and

workmanship for aperiod of two (2) years commencing on the date

of original purchase andwill, at its option, repair or replace, free of

charge, any part found to be defective in materials or workmanship.

This limited warranty shall only apply if this product has been

operated and maintained in accordance with the Operator's Manual

furnished with the product, and has not beensubject to misuse,

abuse, commercial use, neglect, accident, improper maintenance,

alteration, vandalism, theft, fire, water, or damage because of other

peril or natural disaster. Damage resulting from the installation or use

of any part, accessory or attachment not approved byMTD for use

with the product(s) covered bythis manual will void your warranty as

to any resulting damage.

Normal WearPartsare warranted to befree from defects in material

andworkmanship for a period of thirty (30) days from the date of

purchase. Normal wear parts include, but are not limited to items

such as: batteries, belts, blades, bladeadapters, tines, grass bags,

wheels, rider deck wheels, seats, snow thrower skid shoes, friction

wheels, shaveplates, auger spiral rubber, engine oil, air filters, spark

plugs andtires.

Attachments-- MTD warrants attachments for this product against

defects in material and workmanship for aperiod of one (1) year,

commencing on the date of the attachment's original purchase or

lease.Attachments include, but are not limited to items such as:

grass collectors and mulch kits.

Log splitter pumps, valves, and cylinders havea separate one-

Routine maintenance items such as lubricants, filters, blade

sharpening, tune-ups, brake adjustments, clutch adjustments,

deck adjustments, andnormal deterioration of the exterior finish

dueto use or exposure.

c. Service completed by someone other than an authorized service

dealer.

d. MTD does not extend any warranty for products sold or exported

outside of the United States and/or Canada,and their respective

possessions and territories, exceptthose sold through MTD's

authorized channels of export distribution.

e. Replacement parts that are not genuine MTD parts.

f. Transportation charges andservice calls.

g. MTD does not warrant this product for commercial use.

No implied warranty, includingany implied warranty of

merchantability offitness for a particular purpose, applies after

the applicable periodof express written warranty above as to the

parts as identified. No other express warranty, whether written or

oral, except as mentioned above, given by any personor entity,

includinga dealer or retailer, with respect to any product, shall

bind MTD. Duringthe period of the warranty, the exclusiveremedy

is repair or replacement of the productasset forth above.

The provisionsasset forth in this warranty providethe sole and

exclusive remedy arising from the sale. MTD shall not be liable

for incidental orconsequential loss or damage including, without

limitation, expenses incurred for substitute or replacement lawn

care services or for rental expenses to temporarily replace a

warranted product.

Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental

or consequential damages, or limitations on how long an implied

warranty lasts, sothe above exclusions or limitations may not apply

to you.

In no eventshall recovery of any kind be greater than the amount of

the purchase price ofthe product sold. Alteration of safety features of

the product shall void this warranty. You assume the risk and liability

for loss, damage, or injury to you and your property and/or to others

andtheir property arising out of the misuse or inability to use the

This limited warranty shall not extend to anyone other than the
