Hello, my name is Donny Chen and I’m the designer
behind the LEGO
®
Ideas Grand Piano. Originally
from Guangzhou, China, I now work as a piano
teacher and tuner in Australia.
I’ve always seen toys as something to be imagined,
not just played with.
When I was a child, I liked to build toys from
scratch. I was fascinated with toy cars,
construction toys and anything with a mechanical
element to it. For me, the joy was in the endless
possibilities of creating.
Growing up in China, LEGO
bricks weren’t easy to
get hold of.
I was 25 years old when I bought my rst set 8
years ago, and it hasn’t stopped surprising me since.
Although I was a latecomer to LEGO toys, I’ve since
fallen in love with the bricks and it’s now my biggest
hobby by far, aside from music. In fact, I’ve even
created a model of my own home, including ve
pianos.
This build brought together my two greatest
passions in life.
When I’m not building with LEGO bricks, I’m
teaching, tuning or writing music on my piano. So,
when I rst discovered LEGO Ideas, I knew I wanted
to build something that could make the musical and
LEGO worlds come together.

Bonjour. Je m’appelle Donny Chen et je suis
le concepteur du piano à queue LEGO
®
Ideas.
Originaire de Guangzhou, en Chine, je travaille
maintenant comme professeur de piano et
accordeur en Australie.
J’ai toujours vu les jouets comme quelque chose à
concevoir, pas seulement un objet avec lequel jouer.
Quand j’étais enfant, j’aimais construire des jouets
à partir de rien. J’étais fasciné par les voitures
miniatures, les jouets de construction et tout ce qui
comporte un aspect mécanique. Pour moi, la joie
résidait dans les possibilités innies de création.
Ayant grandi en Chine, je n’avais pas un accès
facile aux briques LEGO.
J’avais 25 ans quand j’ai acheté mon premier
ensemble, il y a 8 ans, et depuis, ça n’a pas cessé
de me surprendre. Malgré mon introduction tardive
aux jouets LEGO, je suis tombé en amour avec les
briques, et c’est maintenant de loin mon plus grand
passe-temps, en dehors de la musique. En fait, j’ai
même créé un modèle de ma propre maison, avec
cinq pianos.
Cette construction a réuni mes deux plus grandes
passions dans la vie.
Quand je ne suis pas en train de construire avec des
briques LEGO, j’enseigne, j’accorde ou je compose de
la musique sur mon piano. Alors, quand j’ai découvert
LEGO Ideas, j’ai su que je voulais construire quelque
chose qui pourrait réunir les mondes de la musique
et de LEGO.

Hola, me llamo Donny Chen y soy el diseñador del

Ideas. Nací en Cantón (China)
y soy profesor de piano y anador en Australia.
Siempre he considerado los juguetes como objetos
para imaginar, no solo para jugar.
Cuando era niño, me gustaba construir mis propios
juguetes. Me fascinaban los autos de juguete, los
juguetes de construcción y todo lo que tuviera
componentes mecánicos. Lo más divertido para mí
eran las innitas posibilidades que me ofrecía la
creatividad.
En China, donde crecí, los bricks LEGO no eran
fáciles de conseguir.
Tenía 25 años cuando compré mi primer set, hace
ahora 8 años, y no he dejado de sorprenderme
desde entonces. Aunque llegué un poco tarde a los
juguetes LEGO, mi amor por los bricks perdura y
es hoy mi pasatiempo más destacado, aparte de la
música. De hecho, incluso he creado un modelo de
mi propia casa con cinco pianos.
Este modelo reunió mis dos mayores pasiones en
la vida.
Cuando no estoy construyendo con
bricks LEGO, enseño, ano instrumentos
o compongo música en mi piano. Por eso,
cuando descubrí LEGO Ideas, supe que
quería construir algo que reuniera los
mundos de la música y de LEGO.
I’m as interested in how a piano works as the
music it makes.
I’ve always been fascinated with the mechanics
of how things work and the engineering behind
great pianos. As a teacher, I also have to explain
what goes on beneath the lid to my students.
This model seemed like a great way to show
them on a smaller scale.
I worked every day for six weeks to make the
model as accurate as possible.
It was really important to me that it felt real,
that it worked and looked as close to a life-
sized piano as possible. It took at least 15 hours
to achieve that authenticity and make sure the
keyboard, bench, damper, pedals and piano
player function all worked like the real thing.

piano fonctionne que par la musique qu’il
produit.
J’ai toujours été fasciné par la mécanique des
choses et par l’ingénierie derrière les grands
pianos. En tant qu’enseignant, je dois aussi
expliquer ce qui se passe sous le couvercle
à mes élèves. Ce modèle semblait être un
excellent moyen de leur montrer à plus petite
échelle.
J’ai travaillé tous les jours pendant six
semaines an de rendre le modèle aussi dèle
que possible.
C’était vraiment important pour moi qu’il
semble réel, qu’il fonctionne le plus possible
comme un piano grandeur nature. Il m’a fallu
au moins 15 heures pour atteindre cette
authenticité et m’assurer que le clavier, le banc,
l’étouoir, les pédales et la fonction de pianiste
fonctionnent comme sur un vrai piano.

piano como la música que produce.
Siempre me han fascinado los mecanismos que
permiten funcionar a las cosas y la ingeniería
que esconden los grandes pianos. Como
profesor, tengo que explicar a mis alumnos lo
que sucede debajo de la tapa. Este modelo me
pareció una forma fantástica de enseñárselo en
pequeña escala.
Trabajé todos los días durante seis semanas
para que el modelo fuera lo más el posible.
Era muy importante para mí que se sintiera
real, que funcionara y que se pareciera tanto
como fuera posible a un piano de tamaño real.
Necesité, al menos, 15 horas para alcanzar ese
grado de autenticidad y asegurarme de que el
teclado, el banco, los apagadores, los pedales
y la función de pianola funcionaran como si
fueran de verdad.
Not everything went 100% according to plan.
There were a few hiccups during the design
process, particularly with the fall board (the
lid that covers the keys). I must have changed
the design four times until I got it right. In the
end, I was happy that it closed, felt and worked
exactly like a working piano. But of course,
making the LEGO
®
Grand Piano playable was my
main focus when I designed it, and at the same
time, the most challenging part of the build.
When Donny came to Billund and visited the
Ideas team…
…we arranged a surprise for him so he could
meet a couple of his LEGO designer role models.
To Donny’s delight, some of his favorite
designers surprised him by bursting in on a
meeting, and then proceeded to discuss the ne
details of his model. He later met with the LEGO
Ideas team and Woon Tze, who was the main
LEGO designer for the project.

Il y a eu quelques pépins durant le processus
de conception, en particulier avec le couvercle
qui recouvre le clavier. J’ai dû réviser le concept
quatre fois avant d’arriver au résultat escompté.
Après, j’étais heureux qu’il ferme et fonctionne
exactement comme sur un piano fonctionnel.

partie la plus dicile de la construction.
Quand Donny est venu à Billund et a visité
l’équipe Ideas...
... nous lui avons préparé une surprise en invitant
quelques-uns des concepteurs LEGO qu’il admire
le plus à venir le rencontrer. Pour le plus grand
plaisir de Donny, certains de ses concepteurs
préférés l’ont surpris en faisant irruption dans
une réunion, puis ils ont discuté des détails
de son modèle. Il a ensuite rencontré l’équipe
de LEGO Ideas ainsi que Woon Tze, qui était le
concepteur LEGO principal pour ce projet.

Tuve algunos contratiempos durante el proceso
de diseño, particularmente con la tapa del

My wife plays and teaches the piano and was my inspiration to work on this
project. Over the years, she has been very understanding and supportive of
my LEGO
®
hobby and our move to Denmark, so I felt very happy and lucky
that I got to work on a project that supports her main hobby. This was truly a
great way to bring our individual passions for music and LEGO toys together.
This is my way of saying thank you to her.
I was impressed when I rst saw the model on LEGO Ideas. Donny did an
amazing job with all the details and functionality. We tried to keep the model
as authentic as possible. Although small, the model is as much an engineering
challenge as a real piano and all the components are so interconnected that
any slight modication in one section will cause a chain reaction in another.
By striving for the strictest of LEGO quality, we hope fans will have a great
building experience.
Woon Tze Chee
Ma femme est pianiste et professeure de piano, et elle a été mon inspiration
pour ce projet. Au l des ans, elle a été très compréhensive et favorable à mon
passe-temps LEGO
®
et à notre déménagement au Danemark, donc je me suis
senti très heureux et chanceux d’avoir pu travailler sur un projet qui soutient
son passe-temps principal. C’était vraiment une excellente façon de réunir nos
passions individuelles pour la musique et pour les jouets LEGO. C’est ma façon
de lui dire merci.
J’ai été impressionné quand j’ai vu le modèle sur le site LEGO Ideas. Donny a
fait un travail remarquable avec tous les détails et les fonctionnalités. Nous
avons essayé de garder le modèle aussi authentique que possible. Malgré
sa petite taille, le modèle est un aussi grand dé d’ingénierie qu’un vrai

Woon Tze Chee
Mi mujer toca el piano y da clases de este instrumento; ella
fue mi inspiración al trabajar en este proyecto. A lo largo de
los años, ha comprendido y apoyado enormemente mi ación
por LEGO
®
y nuestro traslado a Dinamarca, por lo que me
sentí feliz y afortunado de poder trabajar en un proyecto
relacionado con su pasatiempo principal. Fue una magníca
manera de combinar las pasiones de cada uno: la música y los
juguetes LEGO. Esta es mi forma de darle las gracias.
La primera vez que lo vi en LEGO Ideas, el modelo me
impresionó. Donny había hecho un trabajo increíble con los

I was asked to help out with the concept model and once I saw it, I gladly took
the task. It was such a cool model with some interesting challenges. From the
very beginning, there was a huge excitement from all sides; tech, design and
marketing, because here we had the opportunity to make something really
special. For me personally, it was the challenge of turning a very cool fan
model into a proof-of-concept model, especially the play mechanism which I
was delighted to work on.
What I love most about the model is the fact that you can ‘play’ on the piano,
and the functions are similar to the ones on a real piano.

On m’a demandé d’aider à élaborer le modèle conceptuel et, une fois que je l’ai
vu, j’ai accepté cette tâche avec plaisir. C’était un modèle vraiment cool avec
quelques dés intéressants. Dès le début, il y a eu un énorme enthousiasme à
tous les niveaux : la technologie, la conception et le marketing, parce que nous
avions l’occasion de faire quelque chose de vraiment spécial. Pour moi, c’était
le dé de transformer un modèle génial conçu par un fan en un modèle de
démonstration de faisabilité, en particulier le mécanisme de jeu, sur lequel j’ai
été ravi de travailler.
Ce que j’aime le plus de ce modèle, c’est le fait de pouvoir « jouer » sur le piano,
et que les fonctions sont similaires à celles d’un vrai piano.

Me pidieron que colaborara en el prototipo y, cuando vi el modelo, acepté
con gusto la tarea. Era un modelo genial con algunos desafíos interesantes
que superar. Desde el principio, todos, en tecnología, en diseño y en
mercadotecnia, estábamos entusiasmados porque teníamos la oportunidad
de hacer algo realmente especial. Para mí, se trataba de enfrentar el
reto de convertir un modelo genial de un fan en una prueba de concepto,
especialmente en el caso del mecanismo de pianola, en el que me encantó
trabajar.
Lo que más me gusta del modelo es el hecho de que puedas “tocar” el piano y
usar funciones similares a las de un piano de verdad.
