PROTECTION FOR CHILDREN
Tragic accidents canoccur if the operator is not alert to
the presenceof children. Children are often attracted to
the machineand the mowing activity. Never assumethat
children will remain whereyou lastsaw them.
1. KEEPchildren out of the mowing area and under the
watchful careof a responsible adult other than the operator.
2. DONOTallow children in yard when machine is operated
andturn machine OFFifanyoneenters the area.
3. DONOTallow pre-teenagechildren to operate machine.
4.ALLOW only responsible adults & teenagerswith mature
judgment underclose adult supervision to operate machine.
5. DONOTpull mower backwards unless absolutely
necessary.LOOKand SEEbehind and down for children,
pets and hazards beforeand while backing.
6. USEEXTRACAREwhen approaching blind corners,
shrubs, trees, or other objects that may obscure vision.
SLOPEOPERATION
1. Slopesare a major factor relatedto slip and fall
accidents,which can result in severeinjury. All slopes
require extra caution. If you feel uneasyon a slope, DONOT
mow it.
2. Mow across slopes, neverup-and-down. Exercise
extremeCAUTIONwhen changing directions on slopes. DO
NOTmow steep slopes or other areaswhere stability or
traction is in doubt. Referto the Slope Guideat the back of
this manual.
3. Useextra carewith grass catchers or other attachments;
these affect the handling and the stability of the machine.
PREPARATION
1. Read,understand, and follow instructions and warnings
inthis manualand on the mower, engineand attachments.
Knowthe controls and the proper useof the mower before
starting.
2. Only mature, responsible persons shall operatethe
machine and only after proper instruction.
3. Data indicatesthat operators age 60 and above,are
involved in a large percentageof mower-related injuries.
Theseoperators should evaluatetheir ability to operatethe
mower safely enough to protect themselvesand others
from serious injury.
4. Handlefuel with extra care. Fuelsareflammable and
vapors are explosive. Useonly an approvedfuel container.

Add fuel outdoors only with enginestopped and cool. Clean

5. Checkthe areato be mowed and removeall objects such
as toys, wire, rocks, limbs and other objects that could
cause injury if thrown by bladeor interferewith mowing.
Also notethe location of holes,stumps, and other possible
hazards.
6. Keeppeople and pets out of the mowing area.
Immediately, STOPBlade,Stop engine and Stop mower if
anyone enters the area.
7. Checkshields, deflectors, switches, blade controls and
other safety devicesfrequently for proper operation and
location.
8. Make sureall safetydecals are clearly legible. Replaceif
damaged.
9. Protectyourself when mowing and wear safety glasses,
long pants and substantial footwear. DONOTmow
barefootedor with sandals.
10. Know how to STOPbladeand engine quickly in
preparationfor emergencies.
11. Use extra carewhen loading or unloadingthe machine
into a trailer or truck.
12. Checkgrass catchercomponents frequently for signs of
wear or deterioration and replaceas neededto prevent inju-
ry from thrown objects going through weak or torn spots.
SAFEHANDLINGOFGASOLINE
To avoid personal injury or property damage,use extreme
care in handling gasoline. Gasolineis extremely flammable
and the vapors are explosive.
1. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources
of ignition.
2. Use only an approvedfuel container.
3. DONOTremovefuel cap or add fuel with the engine
running. Allow the engineto cool before refueling.
4. DONOTrefuelthe machine indoors.
5. DONOTstore the machineor fuel container inside where
there is an open flame, spark or pilot light such as on a
water heateror other appliances.
6. DONOTfiii fuel containers inside a vehicle or on a
truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always placethe
containers on the ground away from the vehicle before
filling.

7. Removegas-poweredequipment from the vehicle or
trailer and refuelit on the ground. If this is not possible,
then refuelequipment using a portablecontainer, rather
than a gasolinedispenser nozzle.
8. DONOTstart gas poweredequipment in enclosed
vehicles or trailers.
9. Keepthe nozzlein contact with the rim of the fuel tank or
container opening at all times until fueling is complete. DO

10. If fuel is spilled on clothing, change clothing
immediately.

OPERATION

roads, and under anyconditions where thrown objects
might be a hazard.
3. Mow only in daylight or good artificial light.
4. DONOToperatemower while underthe influence of
alcohol or drugs.
5.After striking a foreign object or if mower vibrates
abnormally, STOPthe engine,disconnect and securespark
plug wire. inspect the mower for anydamageand repair the
damagebeforestarting.
6. DONOTmow near drop otis, ditches or embankments.
Operatorcould lose footing or balance.
7. STAYALERTfor holesand other hidden hazards.Tail
grass can hide obstacles. Keepawayfrom ditches,wash-
outs, culverts, fences and protruding objects.
8. DONOTmow on wet grass. Always be sure of your
footing. Keepa firm hold on the handleand walk, neverrun.
Slipping could cause injury.
9.ALWAYSstay behind handlewhen engine (motor) is
running.
10. DONOTleavethe machinewith the engine run-
ning. STOPBLADEand STOPENGINEbefore leavingthe
operators position for any reason.
11. Beforecleaning, repairing or inspecting make cer-
tain engine,blade and all moving parts haveSTOPPED.
Disconnectand secure spark plugwire awayfrom plug to
prevent accidentalstarting.
12. STOPengineand wait until the bladecomes to
completeSTOPbeforeremoving grass bagand/or clearing
grass.
13. DONOToperatemower without the entire grass
catcher, rear guard, or other safety devices in placeand
working. DONOTpoint discharge at people, passing cars,
windows or doors.

obstruction. Material may ricochet back towards the
operator.

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE
1. DONOTstore mower or fuel container inside where
fumes may reachan openflame, spark or pilot light such
as in a water heater,furnace, clothes dryer or other gas
appliance. Allow engine to cool before storing machine in
an enclosure.Store fuel container out of reachof children
in awell ventilated, unoccupied building.
2. Keepmower and engine free of grass, leavesor excess
greaseto reducefire hazardand engine overheating.
3. Whendraining fuel tank, drain fuel into an approved
container outdoors and away from openflame.
4. Keepall bolts, especially bladebolts, nuts and screws
properly tight. Checkthat all cotter pins are in proper
position.
5. Alwaysprovide adequateventilation when running
engine. Engineexhaust gasescontain carbon monoxide, a
deadly poison.
6. Serviceengine and makeadjustments only when engine
is stopped. Removedspark plug wire from spark plug and
secure wire awayfrom spark plugto prevent accidental
starting.
7. DONOTchangeengine governor speedsettings or
overspeed engine.
8. Checkgrass bag assembly frequently for wear or dete-
rioration to avoid thrown objects and exposureto moving
parts. Replacewith new bagif loose seamsor tears are evi-
dent. Replaceslider or bagadapter if brokenor cracked.
9. Mower bladesare sharp and can cut. Wrap the bladesor
wear heavy leathergloves and useCAUTIONwhen handling
them.
10. DONOTtest for spark by grounding spark plug next to
spark plug hole; spark plug could ignite gas exiting engine.
11. Havemachine serviced by an authorized dealerat least
once a year and havethe dealer install any newsafety
devices.
12. Use only factory authorized replacementparts or like
parts when making repairs.

Raisethe HandleAssembly
1. Loosen, but do not remove,the knobs (A, Figure 2) on
both sides of the upper handle.
2. Unfold the upper handleso that it is aligned with the
lower handle,and tighten the upper knobs.
3. Removethe handle knobs, washers and carriagebolts
from the lower handle (B).
4. Raisethe lower handle,aligning it with one of the three
sets of holes in the handle bracket. (Most userswill pre-
fer the middle position). Replacethe hardware removed
in Step3, tightening securely.
Set Upthe Starter RopeHandle
1. Squeezethe bladecontrol (A, Figure 3) against the
drive control (B).
NOTE.The blade control and drive control can be operated
from either side.
2. Pull the starter rope handle(C) out of the engine to the
rope guide (D). Hook the starter rope into the rope guide
(it might be a tight fit).

Operation
BeforeStarting
1. Checkthe guards, deflectors, grass bag,and coversto
make sure all are in placeand securelytightened.
2. Checkthe blade control (A, Figure 4) and drive control
(B) to insure they work freely.

Checkthe cutting height. Adjust to the desiredheight.
Refer to the section entitled 'Cutting Height Adjustment'.
Checkthe engine oil:
• Makesure the mower is on a level surface.
• Cleanthe oil fill areaof anydebris.
• Removethe dipstick (A, Figure 5) and wipe with a
cleancloth.
• insert andtighten the dipstick.
• Removethe dipstick and checkthe oil level. It should
be at the top of the full indicator (B) on the dipstick.
• If low, add oil (Briggs & Stratton warranty-certified
SAE30lawnmower oil is recommended) slowly into the
engine oil fill. Do notoverfill. After adding oil, wait one
minute and recheckthe oil level.
• Replaceandtighten the dipstick.
5. Add fuel to the tank:
• Makesure the mower is outside, where fumes can
safely dissipate.
• Removethe fuel fill cap (C, Figure 5).
• Fill the tankwith fuel. Referto the section entitled 'Fuel
Recommendations'.To allow for expansionof the fuel,
do not fill abovethe bottom of the filler neck(B).
• Reinstallthefuel fill cap.
6. Cleanthe exterior surfaces of the cutting deck and
engine of any accumulation of spilled fuel, dirt, grass,
oil, etc. Keepthe engine air intakescreen and cooling
fins clear at all times.
7. Chargethe battery. Refer to the section entitled
"Charging the Battery".
FuelRecommendations
Fuel mustmeet these requirements:
• Clean,fresh, unleadedgasolinewith
• A minimum of 87 octane / 87AKI (90 RON).
• Gasolinewith up to 10% ethanol (gasahol) or up to 15%
MTBE(methyl tertiary butyl ether) is acceptable.
• CAUTION:DONOTuse unapprovedgasoline, such as E85.
Do not mix oil in gasoline or modify the engineto run on
alternative fuels. This wiii damagethe engine components
and voidthe engine warranty.
Theengine on this equipment is certified to operateon
gasoline. Theemissions control systemfor this engine is EM
(Engine Modifications).
High Altitude
At altitudes over 5,000 feet (1524 meters), a minimum 85
octane/85AKi (89 RON)gasoline is acceptable.To remain
emissions compliant, high altitude adjustment is required.
Operationwithout this adjustment will cause decreased
performance, increasedfuel consumption, and increased
emissions.
Operationof the engineat altitudes below 2,500 feet (762
meters) with the high altitude kit is not recommended.

Starting the Mower
Theengine on this mower is equipped with aReadyStart®
system, which featuresa temperature-controlled automatic
choke, it does not havea manual choke or a primer.
1. Squeezethe bladecontrol (A, Figure 6) against the
drive control (B).
2. Pull the drive control all the way backto the neutral
position.
NOTEThe blade control and drive control can be operated
from either side.
3. Turn the ignition key (C, SPXV2270E,NSPXV2270E)or
pull the rope start handle (D) to start the engine.
4. To stop the engine (and blade), releasethe blade
control.
5. After the engine starts, allow a brief warm-up until the
engine runs smooth before beginning mower operation.

1. Start the engine.
2. Begin slowly pushing the drive control (A, Figure 7)
forward to propel the mower. Forward speedcan be
increased by pushing the drive control further forward.
NOTEThe drive control canbe operatedfrom either side.
IMPORTANT:Upon initial use, the drive control may have
to be adjusted. Referto the section entitled "Drive Control
Adjustment".

can be adjusted.
1. Removethe handle knobs, washersand carriagebolts
from the lower handle (A, Figure 8).
NOTE:Donot removethe lower set of handle hardware(C).
2. Align the handle assemblywith one of the three handle
height adjustment holes (B).
3. Replacethe hardware removed in Step 1, tightening
securely.
Stoppingthe Mower
1. Stop forward motion of the mower by pulling the drive
control all the way back.
2. Stop the engine and blade by releasingthe blade
control.
3. Removethe ignition key from the control console
(SPXV2270E,NSPXV2270E).

Pull the cutting height adjust lever(A, Figure 9)
outward, and move to the desiredcutting height. The
highest cutting position is Notch 9, and the lowest
cutting position is Notch 1 (Figure 10). The leverwill
set all wheels to the samecutting height.

Installingthe DischargeDeflector

Removestarter insert. Disconnectspark plug wire and

1. Raisethe mulching cover (A, Figure 11).
2. Install the deflector (B) to the deck under the mulching
cover, making sure that the locking tabs on the deck (C)
go through the slots in the deflector (B).
3. Lowerthe mulching cover against the deflector.

Mulching Operation
For best mulching results, cut up to a maximum of 1/3 of
grass length and recycle ONLYwhen grass is dry.
1. Make sure the discharge deflector and grass bag are
removed, and the mulching plug is installed.
2. Setthe cutting height adjust lever in the highest cutting
position (Notch 9).
3. Proceedmowing slowly. Graduallylower the cutting
height to obtain the best combination of cutting and
mulching performance.Cutting too much grass in one
pass, or cutting wet heavygrass maycause clumping or
plugging of the mower deck.

when bagging is desired, and must be replacedas soon as
bagging operations are completed.

2. Removethe mulching plug (B) from the rear discharge
chute.

Holding the grass bag handle (A, Figure 13), install the
grass bag onto the mower, making sure that the grass
bag hooks (B) are hookedonto the rear door pivot rod
(c),
WARNING
Grass Catcherbags are madeof woven fabric, and are
subject to deterioration and wear during normal usage.
Checkcondition of bag beforeeach use. immediately
replaceworn or damagedcatcher bagswith only bags
recommended bythe manufacturer. The grass catcher
is optional equipment on some models.

Chargingthe Battery
The batteryin this mower is sealedand maintenancefree,
and requiresno serviceother than charging. If the battery
will not accepta charge, bring the mower to an authorized
servicecenter for service.
1. Using the supplied charger, plug the charger connec-
tor into the battery chargeport (A, Figure14). Plug
the charger into awall outlet and chargethe battery
for 12-24 hours. (Longer periods will not damagethe
battery.)
Important: Use only the charger supplied with the mower to
chargethe battery. Using a different charger may damage
the battery and/or mower.
2. Whencharging is complete, unplug and store the
charger.

Mainlenance Reminder
The maintenancereminder (A, Figure15) provides timely
reminders of important maintenanceitems. It has six
display modes:
Total Hours
Displays total hours mower hasbeen operated.This is the
default screen.
Trip Hours
To display:
Press the 'Mode' button (B) until the 'Trip Hours' screen
is displayed.
To reset:

fuel tank. Referto the section entitled 'Fuel System'.

If the transmission does not engageor disengage,
adjustment may be performed asfollows:
• If the transmission does not engage,rotate the turnbuckle
(A, Figure19) one-half turn to movethe ferrules (B) out
from the turnbuckle. Checkand repeatasneeded.
• If the transmission does not disengage, rotate the turn-
buckle one-half turn to move the ferrules in toward the turn-
buckle. Checkand repeatas needed.
3. Usea brush or compressed air to remove loose debris,
then use a damp cloth to wipe down the unit.
4. Tilt the mower up on its rear wheels and inspect the
underside of the deck. (Do not tilt the mower with the
spark plug or carburetor down.) Scrapeaway stubborn
accumulation of grass with a putty knife and/or wire
brush.
5. Lubricateall exposed metal with a light coating of oil to
prevent corrosion.
6. Carefullyfold the handles,flexing the control cablesto
prevent cable damage.
7. Store the mower in a shed or other dry area,protected
from weather.
FuelSystem
Fuelcan becomestale when stored over 30 days.Stalefuel
causesacid and gum depositsto form in thefuel system or
on essentialcarburetor parts. To keepfuel fresh, use Bfiggs
& Stratton FRESHSTART® fuel stabilizer, availableas a
liquid additive or a drip concentratecartridge.

Caution: Incorrect adjustment cancause premature wear

Thereis no need to drain gasolinefrom the engine if afuel
stabilizer is added according to instructions. Runthe engine
for 2 minutes to circulatethe stabilizer throughout the fuel
system. The engine and fuel canthen bestored up to 24
months.
If gasoline in the engine has not beentreated with a fuel
stabilizer, it must be drained into an approvedcontainer. Run
the engine until it stops from lack of fuel. Theuse of a fuel
stabilizer in the storage container is recommendedto
maintain freshness.

charges on product submitted for repair or replacement under this warranty must be borne by purchaser. This warranty is
effective for the time periods and subject to the conditions stated below. For warranty service, find the nearest Authorized

There is no other express warranty. Implied warranties, including those of merchantability and fitness for a particular
purpose, are limited to one year from purchase or to the extent permitted by law. Liability for incidental or consequential
damages are excluded to the extent exclusion is permitted by law.
Some states or countries do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, and some states or countries do
not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation and exclusion may not

The warranty period begins on the date of purchase by the first retail consumer or commercial end user, and continues for the

Most warranty repairs are handled routinely, but sometimes requests for warranty service may not be appropriate. This warranty
only covers defects in materials or workmanship. It does not cover damage caused by improper use or abuse, improper
maintenance or repair, normal wear and tear, or stale or unapproved fuel.
improper Use and Abuse - The proper, intended use of this product is described in the Operator's Manual. Using the product in
a way not described in the Operator's Manual or using the product after it has been damaged will void your warranty. Warranty is
not allowed if the serial number on the product has been removed or the product has been altered or modified in any way, or if the
product has evidence of abuse such as impact damage, or water/chemical corrosion damage.
improper Maintenance or Repair - This product must be maintained according to the procedures and schedules provided in the
Operator's Manual, and serviced or repaired using genuine Briggs & Stratton parts. Damage caused by lack of maintenance or use
of non-original parts is not covered by warranty.
Normal Wear - Like all mechanical devices, your unit is subject to wear even when properly maintained. This warranty does not
cover repairs when normal use has exhausted the life of a part or the equipment. Maintenance and wear items such as filters,
belts, cutting blades, and brake pads (engine brake pads are covered) are not covered by warranty due to wear characteristics
alone, unless the cause is due to defects in material or workmanship.
Stale Fuel - In order to function correctly, this product requires fresh fuel that conforms to the criteria specified in the Operator's
Manual. Damage caused by stale fuel (carburetor leaks, clogged fuel tubes, sticking valves, etc) is not covered by warranty.

Emissions Control Warranty Statement Your Warranty Rights And Obligations
The California Air Resources Board, U.S. EPA, and Briggs & Stratton (B&S) are
pleased to explain the emissions control system warranty on your Model Year
2011-2012 engine / equipment. In California, new small off-road engines and large
spark ignited engines less than or equal to 1.0 liter must be designed, built, and
equipped to meet the State's stringent anti-smog standards. B&S must warrant the
emissions control system on your engine / equipment for the periods of time listed below
provided there has been no abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance of your engine or
equipment.
Your emissions control system may include parts such as the carburetor or fuel injection
system, fuel tank, ignition system, and catalytic converter. Also included may be hoses,
belts, connectors, sensors, and other emissions-related assemblies.
Where a warrantable condition exists, B&S wilt repair your engine / equipment at no
cost to you including diagnosis, parts, and labor.
Manufacturer's Warranty Coverage:
Small off-road engines and large spark ignited engines less than or equal to 1.0 liter are
warranted for three years. If any emissions-related part on your engine / equipment is
defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by B&S.
Owner's Warranty Responsibilities:
• As tile engine / equipment owner, you are responsible for tile performance of the
required maintenance listed in your owner's manual. B&S recommends that you
retain all receipts covering maintenance on your engine / equipment, but B&S
cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or your failure to ensure the
performance of all scheduled maintenance.
• As the engine / equipment owner, you should however be aware that B&S may deny
you warranty coverage if your engine / equipment or a part has failed due to abuse,
neglect, improper maintenance, or unapproved modifications.
• You are responsible for presenting your engine / equipment to a B&S distribution
center, servicing dealer, or other equivalent entity, as applicable, as soon as a
problem exists. The warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount
of time, not to exceed 30 days. If you have any questions regarding your warranty
rights and responsibilities, you should contact B&S at (414) 259-5262.
Briggs & Stratton Emissions Control Warranty Provisions
The following are specific provisions relative to your Emissions Controt Warranty Coverage. It is in addition to the B&S engine warranty for non-regulated engines found in the
Operator's Manual.
1. Warranted Emissions Parts
Coverage under this warranty extends only to the parts listed below (the emissions
control systems parts) to the extent these parts were present on the engine
purchased.

• Fuel line, fuel line fittings, ciamps

2. Length of Coverage
For a period of three years from date of original purchase, B&S warrants to the
original purchaser and each subsequent purchaser that the engine is designed,
built, and equipped so as to conform with all applicable regulations adopted by the
Air Resources Board; that it is free from defects in material and workmanship that
could cause the failure of a warranted part; and that it is identical in all material
respects to the engine described in the manufacturer's application for certification.
The warranty period begins on the date the engine is originally purchased.

The warranty on emissions-related parts is as follows:
• Any warranted part that is not scheduled for replacement as required
maintenance in the owner's manual supplied, is warranted for the warranty
period stated above. If any such part fails during the period of warranty
coverage, the part will be repaired or replaced by B&S at no charge to the
owner. Any such part repaired or replaced under the warranty wilt be warranted
for the remaining warranty period.
• Any warranted part that is scheduled only for regular inspection in the owner's
manual supplied, is warranted for the warranty period stated above. Any such
part repaired or replaced under warranty will be warranted for the remaining
warranty period.
• Any warranted part that is scheduled for replacement as required maintenance
in the owner's manual supplied, is warranted for the period of time prior to the
first scheduled replacement point for that part. If the part fails prior to the first
scheduled replacement, the part will be repaired or replaced by B&S at no
charge to the owner. Any such part repaired or replaced under warranty will be
warranted for the remainder of the period prior to the first scheduled
replacement point for the part.
• Add on or modified parts that are not exempted by the Air Resources Board
may not be used. The use of any non exempted add on or modified parts by
the owner will be grounds for disallowing a warranty claim. The manufacturer
wilt not be liable to warrant failures of warranted parts caused by the use of a
non exempted add on or modified part.
Consequential Coverage
Coverage shall extend to the failure of any engine components caused by the
failure of any warranted emissions parts.
Claims and Coverage Exclusions
Warranty claims shall be flied according to the provisions of the B&S engine
warranty policy. Warranty coverage does not apply to failures of emissions parts
that are not originat equipment B&S parts or to parts that fail due to abuse, neglect,
or improper maintenance as set forth in the B&S engine warranty policy. B&S is not
liable for warranty coverage of failures of emissions parts caused by the use of
add-on or modified parts.
Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and Air Index Information
On Your Small Off-Road Engine Emissions Label
Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) small
off-road Emissions Standard must display information regarding the Emissions
Durability Period and the Air Index. Briggs & Stratton makes this information available to
the consumer on our emissions labels. The engine emissions label will indicate
certification information.
The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time
for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper
maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Maintenance instructions. The
following categories are used:
Moderate:
Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running
time.
Intermediate:
Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running
time.
Extended:
Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running
time. For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year.
Therefore, the Emissions Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating
would equate to 10 to 12 years.
Briggs & Stratton engines are certified to meet the United States Environmental
Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emissions standards. For Phase 2 certified
engines, the Emissions Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions Compliance
labeI indicates the number of operating hours for which the engine has been shown to
meet Federal emissions requirements.
For engines less than 225 cc displacement.
Category C = 125 hours, Category B = 250 hours, Category A = 500 hours
For engines of 225 cc or more displacement.

On a riding mower to determine if a slope is safe to mow: (1) disengage the blade(s), (2) put the unit in reverse, and (3) try to back straight up the
slope, if you can back up the slope, it is generally safe to mow. However, ifyou do not feel safe, or ifyou are not completely sure, use this guide
anddo not mow a slope that is greater than 15 degrees. Ifthe riding mower is used with a pull-behind or rear mounted attachment,
do not operate the unit on a slope that is greater than 10 degrees.
A 15 degree slope is a hill that increases in height at approximately 2.5 feet in 10 feet,
A 10 degree slope is a hill that increases in height at approximately 1.7 feet in 10 feet.
Use extreme care at all times, and avoid sudden turns or maneuvers. Follow other instructions in this manual for safety in mowing on
slopes. Operate a riding mower up or down slopes, never across the face of slopes. Operate a walk-behind mower across the face
of slopes, never up or down slopes. Use extra care when operating on or near slopes and obstructions.

PBEPABACION
1. Lea,entienday siga las instrucciones y advertencias contenidas

adjuntos. Debeconocer los controles y laforma de utilizaci6n del

PBEPARACION

4. Manipule el carburante con especialprecauci(_n.Los
carburantes son inflamables y sus vapores son explosivos. Utilice
soiamente un recipiente homologado para elcarburante. NO
retire latapa del carburante ni a_adacarburante con el motor
funcionando.

paradoy frio. Limpie el combustible y aceite derramados sobre la

5. Compruebeia zona en laque va acortar el c6sped y retire
todos losobjetos como juguetes,cables,piedras, ramas y otros
elementos que puedancausar lesionessi son lanzadospot la
cuchiNao interfieren con el funcionamiento del cortac6sped.Tenga
en cuenta tambi_n laubicaci6n de agujeros, troncos cortados y
otros posibles peligros.
6. Mantengaa personasy animales dom_sticos fuera de la zona
de corte. DETENGAdeforma inmediata lacuchiila, ei motor y ei
cortac6sped si cuaiquier persona entra en lazona.
7. Compruebecon frecuencia el funcionamiento y la ubicaci6n de
protecciones, deflectores, interruptores, controles de lacuchilla y
otros dispositivos de seguridad.
8. Aseg_rese de quetodas lasetiquetasde seguridad se leencon
claridad. Substit_yaias pot otras si estD,n da_adas.
9. Prot6jasecuando corte ei c6sped y usegafas protectoras,

8. NOenciendaequipos alimentados pot gas dentro de veh[culos
o camiones cerrados.
9. Mantengala boquilla en contacto con el borde de ia boca dei
tanque o recipiente de combustible entodo momento y hasta

abierta.
10. Si se derrama carburante sobre la ropa, c6,mbiesede
inmediato.
11. NO Ilenedemasiado eltanque de combustible. Vuelvaa
colocar la tapa del dep6sito y aj_stelafirmemente.
FUNCIONAMIENTO
1. NOcoloque las manos o piescerca o debajo de piezas
giratorias. Mantengadespejadala zonade descarga mientras el
motor est_en marcha.
2. DETENGAel motor cuando atraviesezonas, paseoso caminos
degrava o en cualquier situaci6n en quepuedan lanzarseobjetos
queconstituyan un peiigro.
3. Utilice el cortac6sped_nicamente en horas de luz o con
suficiente luz artificial.
4. NOutilice la unidad cuando se halle bajo los efectos del alcohol
o dedrogas.
5. Si golpea un objeto extra_o o el cortac6spedvibra deforma
anormal, DETENGAel motor y desconectey asegure el cable de la
buj[a. Inspeccioneel cortac6speden busca de posiblesda_os y, si
esel caso, rep6,relosantes devolver a arrancarlo.
6. NOutilice el cortac6sped cercabajadas,zanjas o terraplenes. El
operador podr[a dejar de hacer pie o perder el equilibrio.
7. MANTENGASEALERTApor si hubieseagujeros uotros peligros
ocuitos. Lahierba alta puedeocuitar obst6,culos.Mant_ngase
lejos decunetas, desniveles,alcantarillas, vallasy objetos que
sobresalgan.
8. NOutilice el cortac6sped sobre hierba h_meda. Cerci6rese
siempre de hacer pie. Mantengaasido confuerza el mango
y avancelentamente, sin correr. Perder el piepuede causar
accidentes que produzcan lesiones.
9. Mant6ngasesiempre detr6,sdel mango cuando el motor est_en
funcionamiento.
10. NOabandone la m6,quinacon el motor en marcha. DETENGA
LA CUCHILLAy PAREELMOTORantes de abandonar pot
cualquier raz6nel puesto de operador.
11. Antes de limpiar, reparar o inspeccionar, cerci6rese de que se
hayanDETENIDOel motor, la cuchilla y todas las partes m6viles.

IVlANTENIIVlIENTOY ALIVlACENAIVlIENTO
1. NOalmaceneel cortac6spedni el contenedor de combustible
en interiores en que los humos puedanaicanzar llamasexpuestas,
chispas o lucespilotos como lasde loscaientadores deagua,
hornos u otros dispositivos que utilicen combustibles. Dejeque el
motor se enfr[e antes de guardar ia m6,quinaen un lugarcerrado.
AImaceneel contenedor de combustible fuera dei alcancede los
ni_os en una construcci6n ventilada desocupada.
2. Mantengaei cortac6spedy su motor fibre de hierba,hojas
o exceso de grasa para reducir el riesgo de incendio y el
sobrecalentamiento dei motor.
3. Cuandodrene el dep6sito del carburante, vade el carburante en
un contenedor homologado y h6,galoen espaciosexteriores y lejos
de llamasabiertas.
4. Mantengaprocedentemente ajustados todos los pernos,
especialmente los pernosde lacuchilla, tuercas y tornillos.
Compruebe quetodos los pernos de seguridad est_n en la
posici6n adecuada.
5. Procure que haya siempre laventilaci6n adecuadaantes de

transporte del manilla inferior (B).
4. Levanteei maniila inferior, aiine_,ndolocon uno de los tres
juegos de orificios en laabrazadera.(La mayoriade los
usuarios prefieren la posici6n intermedia). Vuelvaa colocar los
aditamentos que quit6 en el Paso3 y apr_telos de un modo
seguro.

bolsa para la hierba y las cubiertas est6n en su lugar y sujetas.
Reviseel control de lacuchilla (A, Figura 4) el control de
transmisi6n (B) para asegurarsede quefuncionan sin ningQn
tipo de obstrucci6n.
5. A_adacombustible al dep6sito:
* Aseg_rese de queel cortac_spedest_ al aire fibre, donde los
humos puedan disiparse de un mode seguro.
. Retire la tapa del dep6sito de combustible (C, Figura 5).
. Lleneel dep6sito con combustible. Consulte la secci6n
titulada "Recomendacionessobre combustible". Para
permitir que el combustible se expanda,no Ileveel dep6sito
per encimade la parte inferior del cuello deltanque de
combustible (D).
. Vuelvaa instalar latapa del tanque de combustible.
6. Limpie la acumulaci6n de combustible derramado, suciedad,
hierba, aceite,etc. que pueda haberen las superficies
extefiores de lacubierta de corte y del motor. Mantenga la
rejifla de entradade aire del motor y las aletas de refrigeraci6n
fimpias en todo memento.
7. Cambiela bateria.Consulte la secci6n titulada "Carga de la
bateda".

Compruebeel aceitedel motor:
=AsegQresede que el cortac_spedse encuentreen una
superficie nivelada.
=Limpie cualquier suciedad queexista en el_,reade Ilenado
del aceite.
• Saquela varilla de nivel deaceite (A, Figura 5) y limpiela con
un pa_o limpio.
• Inserte y apriete la varilla de nivei de aceite.
• Saquela varilla y compruebe el niveidei aceite. Debeestar
en la parte superior del indicador de Ileno(B) de la varilla.
• Si el nivel es bajo, a_ada aceite(so recomiendaaceite para
cortac6spedes SAE30con certificado de garantia Briggs &
Stratton SAE30)ientamenteai dep6sito del aceite dei motor.
No JJeneeJ dep6sito en exceso. Despu6sde a_adir aceite,
espereun minute y luegovuelva a revisar el nivei deaceite.
• Vuelvaa meter y apriete la varilla de nivel deaceite.
Recomendacionessobre
combustible
EJcombustible debe cumplir estos requisites:
=Gasolina nuevay sin plomo con
• Un minimo de 87 octanes/87AKi (90 RON).
• Se aceptaei use de gasolina con un m_,ximodei 10% de etanol
(gasohol) o un m_,ximode115% de MTBE(acetate de metileter de
propilenglicol).
• PRECAUCIONES:NO utilice gasolinas no homologadas, come
es el case de E85.No haga mezclascon las gasolina ni realice
modificaciones en el motor para haceflo funcionar con otros
combustibles. Hacertal cosa da_arialos componentes del motor
y anuJaria Jagarantia deJmotor.
El motor de esteequipo est,, certificado parafuncionar con
gasolina. Elsistema de control de emisiones para este motor es EM
(Modificaciones de motores).
Altitudes alias
Aaltitudes superiores a los 1524 metros (5.000 pies), es aceptable
unagasolina de 85 octanes/85 AKi (89 RON). Pararespetar los
limites sobre emisiones, se necesitan realizarajustes en elcase
de altitudes altas. Elfuncionamiento sin este ajuste supondr_,una
p6rdida de rendimiento, un mayor consumes de combustible y
unas mayoresemisiones.
No se recomienda hacerfuncionar ei motor con el kit para altitudes
altas aaltitudes inferiores a los 762 metros (2.500 pies).

Encendidodel cortac6sped
El motor de estecortac6spedest,, equipado con un sistema
ReadyStart®,que incorpora un estranguhdor autom_,tico
controhdo portemperatura. No dispone de un estrangulador
manual o un cebador.
Operaci6n
1. Apriete el control de la cuchilla (A, Figura 6) contra el control
de transmisi6n (B).
2. Tire del control de transmisi6n totalmente hacia atr_,shasta
Ilevarlo al a posici6n de punto muerto.
NOTA:El control de la cuchilla y el control de transmisi6n pueden
manejarsedesdecualquier hdo.
3. Gire la Ilavede encendido (C, SPV2270E, NSPV2270E)otire
de la manilla de la cuerdadel motor de arranque (D) para
arrancar el motor.
4. Paradetener el motor (y la cuchilla), libere el control de la
cuchilla.
5. Despu6sde que arranque el motor, espereun poco a que se
caliente hastaque el motor funcione de manera suaveantes de
poner enfuncionamiento el cortac6sped.

Paraobtener los mejores resultados de la desmenuzadora,corte
basra un m6,ximode 1/3 de laaltura de la hierba y recicle SOLO
cuando la hierba est6 seca.
1. Aseg_resede que ei deflector de descargay la bolsa para
hierba est6n quitados y que el tap6n de cubrici6n de sueios
est6 instaiado.
2. Fije la palancade ajuste de la altura de corte en la posici6n de
corte m6.salta (Muesca 9).
3. Comiencea cortar el c6sped lentamente.Bajegradualmente
la altura de corte paraobtener la mejor combinaci6n de
rendimiento de corte y triturado. Si corta demasiada hierba
en una pasada,o corta c_spedmuy h_medo, la cubierta del
cortac6sped puedeatascarse.

Agarrandoel mango de la bolsa para hierba(A, Figura 13),
instale labolsa para hierba en el cortac6spedasegur_,ndose
de que losganchos de labolsa (B) est_n enganchadosen la
variNadeleje de la puerta posterior (C).
ADVERTENCIA
Las bolsas del receptorde c6sped est_,nfabricadas con tela
tejida y est_,nsometidas al deterioro y el desgastedurante su uso
normal. Reviseel estado de la bolsa antes de usarla. Sustituya
inmediatamente ias bolsas dei receptor que est_n desgastadas
o da_adascon bolsas exclusivamente recomendadaspot el
fabricante. El receptor de c6spedes un equipo opcional en
algunos modelos.

Cargade ia bateria
La bateriade este cortac6sped est_ selladay no necesitaning_n
tipo de mantenimiento distinto de la carga.Si la bateria no acepta
ninguna carga, Ileve eicortac6speda un centro de mantenimiento
autorizado paraque sea reparada.
1. Con la ayudadel cargador suministrado, enchufeel conector
del cargador en el puerto de carga de labateria (A, Figura 14).
Enchufeel cargador en untomacorriente y cargue labaterfa
durante 12-24 horas. (Si latiene cargando durante m_,s
tiempo, la baterfaresultar_,da_ada.)
Impoflante: Use solamente elcargador suministrado con el
cortac6sped paracambiar la bateria. Si utiliza un cargador diferente,
ello puede da_ar la bateriay/o ei cortac6sped.
2. Unavezse haya completado la carga, desenchufey guarde el
cargador.

3. Coloque recto el cortac6sped y Ileneel motor con aceite
para motor basra iamarca que indica 'lleno' de la varilla.
Se recomienda usaraceite para cortac6sped SAE30con

Si el motor no se detiene, no utilice el ¢ottac_sped.Lleve el

5. Conecteei extremo macho de una manguera est_,ndarcon el
conector del puerto de deslave(A, Figura17).
6. Sit_e en posici6n ONel suministro de agua para la manguera.
7. Arranque el motor y deje que funcione hastaque no salga m_,s
suciedad de debajo de la cubierta del cortac6sped.
8. Detenga ei motor.
9. Sit_e en posici6n OFFel suministro de aguapara la manguera.
10. Desconecte la manguera del conector del puerto de desiave.
11. Arranque el motor y deje quefuncione durante 2-3 minutos
para permitir que sesequela parte inferior de lacubierta del
cortac6sped.

1. Elimine la suciedad y posibles desechos de la parte superior
de lacubierta dei cortac6sped.
2. Limpie cualquier acumulaci6n de suciedad quehayaen o
alrededor dei motor, etc.
Mientras realizala iimpieza, revise los componentes pot si
estuviesen desgastadoso da_ados. Sustituya inmediatamente los
componentes gastados o da_ados.
Puerto de desiave
ADVERTENCIA
• Use una protecci6n ocular adecuada.
• Mantengaalas personasy los animales dom_sticos lejos de la

El puerto dedesiave le permite limpiar la parte inferior de la
cubierta dei cortac6sped. Parausar ei puerto de deslave:
1. Aseg_resede que la bolsa para hierba y el deflector de
descarga lateralest_n quitados.
2. Ajuste la altura de corte hastala posici6n m_,sbaja.
3. Mueva elcortac6sped hasta una superficie niveladay
pavimentada.
4. Detengael motor.

El control de la transmisi6n (A, Figuta 18) debeacoplar la
transmisi6n cuando el control seempuje haciadelantey debe

Procedimientode almacenamiento

Prepareel cortac6spedpara su aimacenamientode "fin de
temporada" de ia siguiente manera:
1. Desconecteel cablede labuj[a y mant_ngaloalejadode la buj[a.
2. Dreneel tanquede combustible y deje queel motor funcione
hastaque el carburador sevade de combustible.
NOTA:Si se utiliza un estabilizador de combustible, no es necesario
drenar eltanque de combustible. Consultela secci6ntitulada
"Sistema del combustible".

Si la transmisi6n no seacopla o desacopla,puede ajustarse de la
siguiente manera:
• Si latransmisi6n no se acopla, gire el tensor (A, Figura lg) media
vuelta para sacarlas f_rulas (B) del tensor. Revisey repita esta
operaci6n cuantas veces sea necesaria.
• Si latransmisi6n no se desacopla,gire el tensor mediavuelta
para meter ias f_rulas en el tensor. Revisey repita esta operaci6n
cuantas vecessea necesaria.
3. Use un cepiilo o aire comprimido para quitar la suciedad que
quede sueitay luego use un paso humedecido paralimpiar la
unidad.
4. Incline eicortac6sped hacia arriba sobre sus ruedastraseras
e inspeccione la parte inferior de lacubierta. (No incline el
cortac6spedcon la buj[ao el carburador haciaabajo.) Rasque
las incrustaciones de hierba m6,sdificiles de limpiar con una
esp6,tulay/o un cepillo de alambre.
5. Lubrique todo el metal expuesto con una capa delgadade
aceitepara impedir la corrosi6n.
6. Doble cuidadosamente los mangos,flexionando los cables de
control para impedir que el cable resulte da_ado.
7. Almaceneei cortac6sped en un cobertizo u otra 6,reaseca que
est_ protegido contra las inclemencias dei tiempo.

Precauci6n: Un ajuste incorrecto puedeocasionar el desgaste
prematuro y/o da_os en los componentes de las rudas motrices.
Sistema de combustible
El combustible puede deteriorarse si sealmacena durante m6,sde
30 d[as. El combustible deteriorado haceque secreen dep6sitos
de 6,cidosy resina en ei sistema de combustible o en componentes
esencialesdei carburador. Paramantener el combustible en buenas
condiciones, use ei estabilizadorde combustible FRESHSTART®
de Briggs & Stratton, disponible como aditivo %uido o enforma de
cartucho concentrado pot goteo.
No es necesariodrenar la gasolina del motor si sea_ade un
estabilizador de combustible de acuerdo con ias instrucciones.
Hagafuncionar el motor durante 2 minutos para queel estabilizador
circule pot el sistema de combustible. De este modo, el motor y ei
combustible puedenalmacenarse hasta24 meses.
Si ia gasolina del motor no se hatratado con un estabilizador de
combustible, debe drenarseen un contenedor aprobado paratal fin.
Hagafuncionar eimotor hastaque se detenga debido a la falta de
combustible. Es recomendable usar un estabilizador de combustible
en ei contenedor de almacenamiento para mantenerei combustible
en buen estado.

desgaste y la rotura propios del uso, o el uso de un combustible en maJ estado o no aprobado.
Uso no adecuado y real uso - El uso correcto y para el que se ha concebido este equipo se describe en el manual del usuario.
Si el producto no se usa de la manera que se describe en el manual del usuario o si el producto se usa despu_s de que haya
resultado daSado, quedar& anuiada la garantia. La garantia queda anulada si se ha borrado el nOmero de serie deJ producto o
el producto ha sido modificado de alguna manera, o si el producto presenta indicios de haber sido usado incorrectamente, por
ejemplo, da5os producidos por un impacto, o daSos producidos por corrosi6n quimica/agua.
Reparaci6ll o malltellJmiellto illcorrectos - Este producto debe mantenerse de acuerdo con los procedimientos y el caJendario
que se proporcionan en el manual del usuario, y debe ser reparado usando para eJJopiezas originales de Briggs & Stratton. La
garantia no cubre los daSos ocasionados por la faka de mantenimiento o el uso de piezas no originales.
Desgaste normal - Como otros dispositivos mec&nicos, su unidad esta sujeta a un desgaste incJuso si se realiza en ella un
mantenimiento correcto. Esta garantia no cubre las reparaciones cuando el uso normal ha agotado la vida Otilde una pieza o del
equipo. Las piezas que sufren desgaste y que deben someterse a programas de mantenimiento tales como los fikros, la correas,
las cuchillas de corte y las zapatas del freno (las zapatas del freno del motor est&n cubiertas por la garantia) no estan cubiertas
por la garantia debido a que 0nicamente pueden desgastarse, a menos que el origen del desgaste sean defectos en el material o
en la fabricaci6n.
Combustible ell maJ estado - Para que este producto funciona correctamente, se necesita combustible fresco (reciente) que
cumpla los criterios especificados en el manual del usuario. Los daSos ocasionados por el combustible viejo (en mal estado),
como fugas en el carburador, tubos de combustible obstruidos, v&lvuJas obstruidas, etc. no est&n cubiertos por la garantia.
* Esto solo se aplica a los motores de Briggs and Stratton. La cobertura de la garantia de los motores no fabricados por Briggs and Stratton la
ofrece el fabricante del motor.

En un cortacesped de monta, para determJnar si una pendJente puede set cortada con seguridad: (1) desacople la(s) cuchilla(s), (2) ponga la
unidad en sentido contrario, y (3) intente retroceder pendiente arriba. Si Vd. puede remontar la pendiente, sera por Io general seguro cortar la
hierba. Sin embargo, si no se siente completamente seguro, siga esta guia y no corte la hierba en pendientes cuya inclinacion sea mayor de
15 grados. Si el cortacesped de monta se utiliza con un accesorio montado "pull-behind" o posterior, no utilice la unidad en pendientes cuya
inclinacion sea superior a 10 grados.
Una pendiente de 15% grados es la propia de una colina que incrementa su altura en apro×imadamente 0,8 m cada 3 m (2,5 pies cada 10 pies).
Una pendiente de 10% grados es la propia de una coJina que incrementa su affura en apro×imadamente 0,5 m cada 3 m (1,7 pies cada 10 pies).
Emplee la mayor precaucJon en todo momento y evJte gJros y maniobras bruscas. SJga el resto de instruccJones de este manual en
pro de la seguridad cuando corte la hierba en pendientes. Utilice el cortacesped de monta de arriba a abajo de la pendiente y nunca a
Io ancho de su cara. Utilice el cortacesped del tipo "walk-behind" a Io ancho de la cara de las pendientes, nunca de arrJba a abajo de
esta. Emplee una precauci6n especial cuando trabaje en pendientes u obturaciones, o cerca de elias.

Clasificaci6n de Potencia: La clasificaci6n de potencia total para losmodelos individuaies de motores a gas seetiqueta de acuerdo con el
c6digo J1940 de SAE (Sociedadde Ingenieros Automotrices) (Procedimiento de Clasificaci6n de Potencia & Torque del Motor Peque_o)y
la clasificaci6n de desempe_ose ha obtenido y seha corregido deacuerdo con SAEJ1995 (Revisi6n2002-05).Los valores de Torque se
derivan a3060 RPM; los valores de potencia se derivan a 3600 RPM. Los valores netos de potencia seroman con escapey filtro deaire
instalado mientras que los valores de potencia total se recogen sin estos accesorios. La potencia total real del motor puede set mayor que
la potencia netadel motor y estar afectadapot, entre otras cosas, condiciones ambientales de operaci6n y variabilidad de motor a motor.
Dadoel amplio conjunto de productos en los cuales son puestos los motores, ei motor agas podda no desarrollar la potenciatotal nominal
cuando sea usadoen una parte dada del equipo acoplado. Estadiferencia se debea una variedad defactores que incluyen, sin limitarse a,
